Koji Wakamatsu S/D

I rented "Go, Go, Second Time Virgin" last night. The actual movie was so-so, but the bonus interview with the director was great. He talked about getting into movies through the gangs in Shinjuku (Yakuza?), filming a movie entirely in his one room (with actors/crew/everyone not allowed to leave the room until shooting was finished after a week), and joining up with the PLO for a brief stint in the 70s when he was trying to make a film about them. I'm fascinated. S/D.

I found Go, Go sort of wearying in its taboo-breaking. I was really surprised to hear Patty Water's "Black Is the Color..." on the soundtrack.

I'm not sure if I want to see or don't want to see Violated Women in White, which Noel Burch celebrates in his book To the Distant Observer. Apparently it was inspired by the Richard Speck murders, although in (one) typical 1960s fashion it dares to imagine them to be some kind of productively transgressive act. (From an IMDB review: "At the end the film seems to be trying to make some political statement but it just comes across as confused and obscene.")

He's made a zillion films, most virtually no-budget. The few medium-budget films he's made have been in the "Roman porn" (S&M) genre.

Homage a Koji Wakamatsu

He talked in the interview about that entire film being based on a single newspaper clipping on the Robert Speck murders that he saw.

Yikes. My mom recalls that event (or at least its media echo) quite vividly. Trully horrifying, and it's a little apalling that someone half way 'round the world would find it inspiring in some fashion.

I'm skeptical of Wakamatsu's politics as I've always been a little skeptical of Oshima's politics (although the latter seemed--at one point at least--to be more actively engaged).

For those who have no idea what we're talking about:

But only if you have a strong stomach (I don't).

'go, go' is pretty twisted. I remember having to ffwd through bits of it, alternately bored and disgusted, but... still ended up glad I saw it by the end

anyone seen either 'united red army' or 'ecstasy of the angels'? those come up as japanese analogues to fassbinder's 'third generation', though neither of them really look like comedies
