it just occured to me today - and i might be wrong, as i dont watch a lot of telly, (i dont have one) - ut isnt Bananaman the best thing ever to have been on TV?

i mean, it was totally funny!

so, am i right or what? care to dispute this fact? ps this is on british TV, right.

ambrose (ambrose), Thursday, 24 July 2003 12:15 (twenty-two years ago)

oops....

ambrose (ambrose), Thursday, 24 July 2003 12:16 (twenty-two years ago)

Bananaman was good, but it was no Dangermouse.

Matt (Matt), Thursday, 24 July 2003 12:18 (twenty-two years ago)

Annoyingly self-consciously unimaginatively wacky concept for a cartoon.

N. (nickdastoor), Thursday, 24 July 2003 12:19 (twenty-two years ago)

It sold out when they put it on TV man. It was great in Nutty.

Tico Tico (Tico Tico), Thursday, 24 July 2003 12:19 (twenty-two years ago)

The biggining of Bananman was always better than the actual storyline...

"but when Eric eats a banana....."

smee (smee), Thursday, 24 July 2003 12:20 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh yeah - I forgot it started in Nutty. To be honest, I had forgotten about Nutty. I bought the first issue. What was the free gift?

N. (nickdastoor), Thursday, 24 July 2003 12:22 (twenty-two years ago)

Ok, so now I'm trying to remember the Bananaman theme tune and I get the first bit but it keeps mutating into the theme from Black Beauty! I need help....

smee (smee), Thursday, 24 July 2003 12:24 (twenty-two years ago)

Voices by the Goodies - great. But tiresome villians: the Weatherman, Dr Gloom, Nurks etc. Nutty rocked.

gobemouche, Thursday, 24 July 2003 12:30 (twenty-two years ago)

Bananaman < SuperTed

nickalicious (nickalicious), Thursday, 24 July 2003 12:32 (twenty-two years ago)

dangermouse was classic, classic, classic tv - as was count duckula. both cosgrove-hall animations, right?

Dave Stelfox (Dave Stelfox), Thursday, 24 July 2003 12:34 (twenty-two years ago)

Was there an occasional Appleman in Bananaman who had been corrupted or something. Team-up tastic.

I was often a wee bit concerned about the subject of personality in Bananaman. Because when Eric eat a Banana he did not just gain the strength of ten bananas but seemed to become considerably stupider. A similar dichotomy exist with Shazam! I guess, since as long as all that strength and so on, he gained the wisdom of Solomon which would should mean he gained a degree of Solomon's personality.

I'm not saying this kept me up all night, but poor Eric, surrendering his physical presence to a lunkerhead like BM. (Sometimes that darn crow would force a banana on Eric too - imagine the sense of self invasion).

Pete (Pete), Thursday, 24 July 2003 12:43 (twenty-two years ago)

You know the Nanny in Count Duckula? The one with the sling? We had a neighbour that talked and dressed and was shaped exactly like her, it was freaky....

smee (smee), Thursday, 24 July 2003 12:45 (twenty-two years ago)

Duckula was rubbish. I never understood the adulation.

Pete (Pete), Thursday, 24 July 2003 12:46 (twenty-two years ago)

Bananaman was the biggest pile of shit, now if you were talking batfink...

Pinkpanther (Pinkpanther), Thursday, 24 July 2003 12:48 (twenty-two years ago)

Your bullets cannot harm me, my wings are like a shield of steel...

I wish I knew HTML so I could make beep beep move across the screen!

smee (smee), Thursday, 24 July 2003 12:50 (twenty-two years ago)

beep beep

MarkH (MarkH), Thursday, 24 July 2003 12:56 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah, Superted, Bananaman and Duckula all crappy. Batfink had wit and grace.

N. (nickdastoor), Thursday, 24 July 2003 12:57 (twenty-two years ago)

you always know what to do banana

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Thursday, 24 July 2003 13:02 (twenty-two years ago)

Thanks Mark...they're going backwards though....

smee (smee), Thursday, 24 July 2003 13:04 (twenty-two years ago)

i hated Superted but watched it avidly. Bananaman was okay...esp. the ones where he fought APPLEMAN! and Duckula passed me by altogether.

stevem (blueski), Thursday, 24 July 2003 13:05 (twenty-two years ago)

yeah why is appleman so singularly memorable?!

minna (minna), Thursday, 24 July 2003 13:06 (twenty-two years ago)

What about Dangermouse? He's amazing!

Pinkpanther (Pinkpanther), Thursday, 24 July 2003 13:07 (twenty-two years ago)

Apple who now?

Pinkpanther (Pinkpanther), Thursday, 24 July 2003 13:07 (twenty-two years ago)

Appleman was so memorable because the idea of a superhero based on a fruit is realy really stupid.

Pete (Pete), Thursday, 24 July 2003 13:08 (twenty-two years ago)

Pete - do you ever say anything positive about anything?

smee (smee), Thursday, 24 July 2003 13:10 (twenty-two years ago)

wasn't Superted Welsh? I seem to remember someone telling me that he appeared on S4C in Welsh first, tho that might be a wind-up.

beep beep

better now? odd that the default for <marquee> (without an attribute) is from right to left....

MarkH (MarkH), Thursday, 24 July 2003 13:12 (twenty-two years ago)

I was huge fan of the comic strip and my 10year old (or whatever) self got hugely excited at the news of its transfer to televeision. Sadly even the voices of The Goodies couldn't prevent disappointment.

Nathan W (Nathan Webb), Thursday, 24 July 2003 13:13 (twenty-two years ago)

Show off! *ducks*

smee (smee), Thursday, 24 July 2003 13:14 (twenty-two years ago)

Yes, Superted was well Welsh.

gobemouche, Thursday, 24 July 2003 13:15 (twenty-two years ago)

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Thursday, 24 July 2003 13:19 (twenty-two years ago)

Dangermouse rocked. Does that count as being positive.

(I can show you to hundreds of threads where I am pro-stuff, but yoy may be able to counter with shed loads where I am anti. Bananaman was a one trick pony - by DAngernouse was not just parody or pastiche - it was genuinely exciting, the first time I ever saw the narrator argue with the characters (oh no! Pomo! Oh No!!!) and the characters themselves were guinely interesting.)

But yes, generally I am negative about everything because life has dealt me a busted flush and I got repetitive strain injury from shaking my fist at the heavens.

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Thursday, 24 July 2003 13:21 (twenty-two years ago)

I can't think today because I'm decaffeinated. Was Penfold the first sidekick who's clearly smarter than the hero, or just the best?

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Thursday, 24 July 2003 13:26 (twenty-two years ago)

"because life has dealt me a busted flush and I got repetitive strain injury from shaking my fist at the heavens"

I can't tell if that's sacrcasm, self pity or plagiarism...

smee (smee), Thursday, 24 July 2003 13:27 (twenty-two years ago)

Well Spot(?) was clearly smarter than Hong Kong Phooey, Andrew.

N. (nickdastoor), Thursday, 24 July 2003 13:30 (twenty-two years ago)

It is not plagarism. Well the busted flush bit is obv. And its not true, if my life was a Poker hand it'd be at least two pair - not the best you can get but thoroughly servicable to win most hands.

Pinkpanther (Pinkpanther), Thursday, 24 July 2003 14:50 (twenty-two years ago)

I heart pinkpanther

smee (smee), Thursday, 24 July 2003 14:53 (twenty-two years ago)

Batfink and Dangermouse (what was the name of the Crow in Dangermouse?) both piss all over Bananaman but Round The Bend rules the roost as far as I'm concerened. Doc Croc and all those pissripping cartoon strips... Anyone else remember that?

Alex K (Alex K), Thursday, 24 July 2003 15:01 (twenty-two years ago)

I thought the theme from Bananaman was wicked and also a little sad!

dog latin (dog latin), Thursday, 24 July 2003 16:04 (twenty-two years ago)

The crow in Danger Mouse = Stiletto?

When I was very very young I looked through every single encyclopedia in the house to find Count Duckula. If Dracula was a real person, I figured he had to be one too. I was a weird kid.

Justyn Dillingham (Justyn Dillingham), Thursday, 24 July 2003 17:00 (twenty-two years ago)

Let us now all praise Superchicken.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 24 July 2003 17:42 (twenty-two years ago)

Has anyone actually seen any of these programmes in the last, say, 8 years?

That pic of Bat Fink is really badly coloured in.

Nick H, Thursday, 24 July 2003 18:17 (twenty-two years ago)

Has anyone actually seen any of these programmes in the last, say, 8 years?

Yes. I have seen Dangermouse quite frequently recently because it is on at around about 2am on Boomerang (Cartoon Network UK's extra digital channel for old cartoons).

The Bananaman theme tune *was* a bit on the melancholy side, wasn't it?

Chriddof (Chriddof), Thursday, 24 July 2003 21:54 (twenty-two years ago)

I forgot to say this: Dangermouse is still ace after all this time.

Chriddof (Chriddof), Thursday, 24 July 2003 21:55 (twenty-two years ago)

can someone cover the bananaman theme tune? the pompous-er the better!

Pinkpanther (Pinkpanther), Friday, 25 July 2003 10:13 (twenty-two years ago)

Wasn't it Baron Greenback or summit?

Pinkpanther (Pinkpanther), Friday, 25 July 2003 10:16 (twenty-two years ago)

Smee, I think you're right, yay!
Now what about the cat in he-man? It was cranger when he was cowardly, but what was it when he changed?

Pinkpanther (Pinkpanther), Friday, 25 July 2003 10:17 (twenty-two years ago)

i rememer DM, penfold, greenback and stiletto the italian crow but i don't remember what greeback's pet was called, or the whiskery dude on th far right was

Dave Stelfox (Dave Stelfox), Friday, 25 July 2003 10:18 (twenty-two years ago)

Baron Silas Greenback - one of my childhood nicknames. How I loved being compared to a meglomanic toad.

Pete (Pete), Friday, 25 July 2003 10:20 (twenty-two years ago)

i can look it up when i get home tho as ai have a dm annual...

Dave Stelfox (Dave Stelfox), Friday, 25 July 2003 10:25 (twenty-two years ago)

Pinkpanther (Pinkpanther), Friday, 25 July 2003 10:26 (twenty-two years ago)

that's such a gyal cartoon! i'd never have watched it as a nipper!

Dave Stelfox (Dave Stelfox), Friday, 25 July 2003 10:26 (twenty-two years ago)

opn a more grown-up note does anyone remeber duckman - that was such a killer cartoon, why isn't it on anymore?

Dave Stelfox (Dave Stelfox), Friday, 25 July 2003 10:28 (twenty-two years ago)

who?

Pinkpanther (Pinkpanther), Friday, 25 July 2003 10:29 (twenty-two years ago)

Duckman was a duck who wasn't a man. Or even very mannish. Its name was easily the worst thing about it.

Pete (Pete), Friday, 25 July 2003 10:31 (twenty-two years ago)

duckman - it was on on bbc2 late at night abt 5/6 yrs ago and was so so good

Dave Stelfox (Dave Stelfox), Friday, 25 July 2003 10:31 (twenty-two years ago)

No idea about that one!

Pinkpanther (Pinkpanther), Friday, 25 July 2003 10:33 (twenty-two years ago)

not many people - i was almost convinced i'd made it up but at least pete remembers it. it was pretty weird and twisted, but v funny, too...

Dave Stelfox (Dave Stelfox), Friday, 25 July 2003 10:36 (twenty-two years ago)

how are ya anyway?!

Dave Stelfox (Dave Stelfox), Friday, 25 July 2003 10:37 (twenty-two years ago)

(if you meant me!) Pissy! u?

Pinkpanther (Pinkpanther), Friday, 25 July 2003 10:39 (twenty-two years ago)

I believe Dweezil Zappa did the voice of the thick son.

Dave Stelfox (Dave Stelfox), Friday, 25 July 2003 10:45 (twenty-two years ago)

Dave Stelfox (Dave Stelfox), Friday, 25 July 2003 10:45 (twenty-two years ago)

Was it a good nite Dave?

Pinkpanther (Pinkpanther), Friday, 25 July 2003 10:46 (twenty-two years ago)

it was... erm... funny ;-)... good music too, some nice food, a few very silly conversations, can't grumble...

Dave Stelfox (Dave Stelfox), Friday, 25 July 2003 10:49 (twenty-two years ago)

hm, methinks there is a story there Mr Stelfox!!

Pinkpanther (Pinkpanther), Friday, 25 July 2003 10:50 (twenty-two years ago)

it was on the other thread!

Dave Stelfox (Dave Stelfox), Friday, 25 July 2003 10:56 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh right yeah i got it!

Pinkpanther (Pinkpanther), Friday, 25 July 2003 10:57 (twenty-two years ago)

Dave Stelfox (Dave Stelfox), Friday, 25 July 2003 10:59 (twenty-two years ago)

Bananaman was cool

Bloggs (Spoonered), Friday, 25 July 2003 13:10 (twenty-two years ago)

was He-Man's cat not called Battlecat? Not terribly imaginative, but a decent rhythm to it.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Friday, 25 July 2003 19:59 (twenty-two years ago)

yeh, Battlecat's the one. about as imaginative as the name He-Man i guess, if not more so.

stevem (blueski), Friday, 25 July 2003 20:08 (twenty-two years ago)

kind of hard to call, as imagination goes

mark s (mark s), Friday, 25 July 2003 20:11 (twenty-two years ago)

At least his sister or girlfriend or whatever she was called was She-Ra rather than She-Woman.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Friday, 25 July 2003 21:39 (twenty-two years ago)

Si Si Barone

Matt (Matt), Saturday, 26 July 2003 00:11 (twenty-two years ago)

Duckman was great. Jason Alexander (George from Seinfeld) did the voice. Favourite bit - when he did yet another morally contemptible act and a caption flashed up saying "new low".

Nathan W (Nathan Webb), Saturday, 26 July 2003 10:05 (twenty-two years ago)

Looking up at that Dangermouse pic, I can't help but notice that one of the crows is reading what appears to be a comic book entitled "ZAP". If that's an intentional R. Crumb shoutout, then holy crap.

Nate Patrin (Nate Patrin), Sunday, 27 July 2003 04:11 (twenty-two years ago)

bananaman scared me in an erotic kind of way as a child, as did marc bolan and bryan ferry's voices. i have since reconciled with bolan, obv, but NEVER with ferry or bananaman. she-ra and kimber (of jem) were my cartoon heroes. mum and dad would let me and my bro and sis get one video each per week, and i would always choose he-man and she-ra. always. eventually i wasn't allowed to get any more cos my whole family got sick to death with he-man and she-ra. isn't that the meanest thing you ever heard?

The Lady Ms Lurex (lucylurex), Sunday, 27 July 2003 04:48 (twenty-two years ago)

twenty-one years pass...

One of my good friends died recently and his dad finally disclosed that he was the inspo for Bananaman. S was always so proud of that. <3

Benson and the Jets (ENBB), Monday, 7 October 2024 19:34 (one year ago)

Oh damn there's a paywall. Anyway - my friend's love of the hulk's transformation scenes gave his dad the idea for Bananaman and he based Eric off of him.
