Come on now!
Here it is after two days growth:

I'll post a pic after each time I shave the rest of my face (usually every two days or so). This is so exciting!!!

Yes, I'll get the next one in focus (or change that one later). I wish I could get a little more handlebar action going but wtf.

When my best friend got married two years ago, the rest of the groomsmen and I decided it would be a good idea to piss off the bride by growing mustaches. We weren't really keen on the way his future wife treated us. We all went down there with some thick staches, she shit. We shaved them off before the ceremony though.

Chris P (Chris P), Thursday, 24 July 2003 14:43 (twenty-one years ago) link

So are handlebars really the goal? I had this friend in elementary school whose dad had the hugest handlebar mustache I'd ever seen. And he greased it or whatever to make the rings coil around perfectly. Best of luck, Bryan!

Sarah McLusky (coco), Thursday, 24 July 2003 14:44 (twenty-one years ago) link

If this works out, Bryan, you should move to the UK and join the Handlebar Club!

Sarah McLusky (coco), Thursday, 24 July 2003 14:46 (twenty-one years ago) link

Chances are in two weeks when I win my bet I'll shave it off. Using moustache wax does sound like fun, though.

Stuff coming from imagedeposit.com doesn't seem to be working with the threads. It's worth right-clicking those red x's of Julia's and Chris's to get the URL so you can go directly too the pics. Chris made Bryan look like Snidely Whiplash or something.

Sarah McLusky (coco), Wednesday, 30 July 2003 12:31 (twenty-one years ago) link

I am glad that Bryan is finding some solace in making himself look goofy for the amusement of a bunch of random people online. Maybe you should take this into some sort of profit-making webcam service?

Chris P (Chris P), Wednesday, 30 July 2003 15:55 (twenty-one years ago) link

Well, here it is today in all its pathetic glory:
http://www3.mb.sympatico.ca/~bryang/73003.jpg

They shaved my dad's off for him so mine'll be coming off on Monday.
I guess I'll explain a little bit why I keep mentioning my dad. He had an aneurism (and a heart attack) on Sunday morning. He was flown from Brandon to Winnipeg for surgery (which was, it seems so far, successful). The face I'm making in this latest picture has for the most part been the face I've been making the whole time, though I was told I look a little sad in the pic from Monday, which I s'pose is allowed. He breathed in some blood and/or vomit at some point and now has pneumonia, which is making recovery from the surgery a little more difficult, but he's in good hands. I wasn't going to talk about this here as I was hoping to just have something to cheer me up when I get a chance to get online, but it's just about the only thing on my mind right now so I thought I'd let you all know. Sorry if it bums anyone out - that wasn't my intention. Don't worry too much about me, but if anyone wants to they can send healing thoughts to my dad.

Bryan (Bryan), Wednesday, 30 July 2003 16:35 (twenty-one years ago) link

I'm so sorry, Bryan.

Ally (mlescaut), Wednesday, 30 July 2003 16:35 (twenty-one years ago) link

Oof, that is terrible. I hope he gets better. At least he is nearby (or at least I assume this is better than if he were in Brandon still).

(Also, let's see some shots that include your entire head! Enough severe cropping! What does the stache look like at work, at home, going to drop the kids off at soccer games, etc. Let's see the stache fit in with your active lifestyle!)

Chris P (Chris P), Wednesday, 30 July 2003 16:37 (twenty-one years ago) link

Um, well, it's mostly been sitting still lately, so it's seemingly living a life of ease for now.

Bryan (Bryan), Wednesday, 30 July 2003 16:39 (twenty-one years ago) link

No I mean what does the stache look like when YOU do these things. Obv the stache doesn't have children of its own yet, it's only a few days old!

Chris P (Chris P), Wednesday, 30 July 2003 16:43 (twenty-one years ago) link

I've mostly been sitting around at the hospital since Sunday. If I get back to work or go to the gym or something I'll be sure to take some pics.

Bryan (Bryan), Wednesday, 30 July 2003 16:45 (twenty-one years ago) link

sorry to hear it bryan. the moustache is coming along nicely.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Wednesday, 30 July 2003 16:46 (twenty-one years ago) link

Hugs for Bryan and his dad!

Chris V. (Chris V), Wednesday, 30 July 2003 16:49 (twenty-one years ago) link

Good heavens, Bryan. My best thoughts for you both.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 30 July 2003 16:54 (twenty-one years ago) link

No I mean what does the stache look like when YOU do these things
I have this strange vision now of the stache bouncing to and fro as Bryan does things at the gym, much in the style of an unrestrained bosom. This leads to the even stranger vision of a moustache brassiere. I think I need a vacation.

Sean Carruthers (SeanC), Wednesday, 30 July 2003 19:06 (twenty-one years ago) link

I'm sorry, Bryan. Best wishes and best of luck.

Millar (Millar), Wednesday, 30 July 2003 19:16 (twenty-one years ago) link

I have a feeling that thoughts of anything resembling unrestrained bosoms wrt his face will cheer Bryan up to no end.

Kim (Kim), Wednesday, 30 July 2003 20:01 (twenty-one years ago) link

Oh my God, Bryan, I hope your father comes through ok.

And please keep on posting silliness to ILX! 'Tis the Ultimate Cheerer-Upper. :)

Thanks everyone for the kind words. My Dad's still a very sick man but I'm confident he'll pull through. Induced comas are a bitch, though.
Here's how the 'stache looked today:
http://www3.mb.sympatico.ca/~bryang/80103.jpg

Monday it will be GONE. It just plain doesn't suit me at all, and people look at me funny (which I am sort of used to but more for the things I do and say). I look like I just had my wisdom teeth extracted!

Bryan (Bryan), Saturday, 2 August 2003 05:45 (twenty-one years ago) link

But what does your father think of the stache?

Chris P (Chris P), Saturday, 2 August 2003 06:17 (twenty-one years ago) link

Sorry about your dad, Bryan. I think the stache would look fine as long as you were wearing a bowler hat. You'd look like a pervert, but a fine one.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Saturday, 2 August 2003 16:26 (twenty-one years ago) link

And here I am, freshly shaven, picture taken only a few minutes ago:
http://www3.mb.sympatico.ca/~bryang/80403.jpg

If someone had taken me up on my offer of a moustache ride, I would've considered keeping it! Thanks for playing along everyone.

Now, in case anyone is concerned, my Dad is very slowly showing some signs of improvement. The pneumonia is a nasty fucking strain and is not particularly easy to get rid of. The forced suctioning of his lungs is painful but necessary. His heart rate seems to be under control. His blood sugar is stable (he's also diabetic). They're not happy about the pressure in his head but hopefully that'll improve in the next day or so. Thanks for reading.

Bryan (Bryan), Monday, 4 August 2003 17:17 (twenty-one years ago) link

The Minor Thirds salute Bryan and his moustache (long may it live in our hearts and memories) and hope his father has a speedy and not-so-painful recovery!

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 4 August 2003 19:00 (twenty-one years ago) link

Oh there's an even better Jake-in-moustache photo...

Chris P (Chris P), Monday, 4 August 2003 19:09 (twenty-one years ago) link

No, the 'stache isn't coming back; I just wanted to say a few things about my dad. No one has to read this, of course.
They had to remove a shunt from my dad's head which was installed to drain fluid to prevent vaso spasms ("A vaso spasm is a constricting of the blood vessels and is caused by the vessels being irritated by blood being on the outside of the vessel. This restricts the amount of blood reaching that portion of the brain and can lead to additional brain damage.") because he has a staph infection in his spinal fluid. The removal of the shunt means at least another week to two weeks of ICU time. There was a concern that he would have severe diarrhoea from the psychotically powerful antibiotic they have to give him for this new infection, but so far so good. They did a tracheotomy and installed a gastric bypass tube this week so now there aren't any tubes in his mouth, which seems to have cheered him up. His heart is improving; bpm around 75 today (was well over 100 bpm up until a couple of days ago). Blood pressure and blood sugar stabilized. The pneumonia seems to be almost beat, the fever just about gone. It appears that he's going to survive thought the doctors and nurses are still unwilling to say so explicitly. Thanks for saying nice things to me, kids, and for the chats.

Bryan (Bryan), Sunday, 10 August 2003 20:40 (twenty-one years ago) link

Yeah, this was a fun thread for me at one of the shittiest times of my life. I actually haven't shaved in 8 days but not out of any desire for producing irony; I've just been lazy. I thought of this thread more as a way to talk about my dad than anything else. He's so-so btw, having some troubles with hydrocephalus which may require a second shunt but after the first one went so smoothly we're not too worried. I'd still like to know who that person was who was hitting on me!
