when will the war in Iraq end?

the current resistance could be coming from disgruntled former Saddamists, and therefore might gradually peter out. The fact that it is concentrated in the Sunni Arab areas of the country lends credence to the view that the partisans are indeed leftovers from the old regime. However, my impression is very much that the occupiers are not doing a good job of endearing themselves to the locals throughout the country. So maybe resistane will spread into the Shia Arab and maybe even the Kurdish areas.

if that happens this war will go on for a while.

what do you think?

It will end many, many times. This war won't have a clearly-defined stopping-point like, say, the First World War did, or Vietnam even. It'll just drag on and on. The only clear ending would be if America suddenly pulled all its military out.

>The only clear ending would be if America suddenly pulled all its military out.

That would be the end of our involvement. Then a civil war could errupt in Iraq, Turkey could invade Kurdistan, etc etc.

maybe.
but who's given the USA and the UK (and er, spain and italy) the moral authority to decide if this has to happen or not? why aren't they stopping the civil war in other countries?

joan vich (joan vich), Thursday, 24 July 2003 16:42 (twenty-two years ago)

Joan, the US doesn't tend to bother with trivialities like "moral authority", tis all about the mighty gun, and showing off its might. Therefore, it would suit the US if the war continued.

Now, if the "allies" succeed at actually wiping out everyone in Iraq, THEN it would stop.

I like the way the newspapers say stuff like "since the war ended, there have been daily firefights."

Horace Mann (Horace Mann), Thursday, 24 July 2003 18:42 (twenty-two years ago)

well the photos are released. go to any news site.

Chris V. (Chris V), Thursday, 24 July 2003 18:47 (twenty-two years ago)

ive been in america for a month, and i must say your news channels are full of shit. fox news may as well just bend over and take it from cheney and bush. thank god for the bbc and channel 4- finally some balanced reporting. i hear blair and the bbc have been squaring off for a fight in my absence...

Bob Shaw (Bob Shaw), Thursday, 31 July 2003 15:27 (twenty-two years ago)

b-b-but Bob, it's "fair and balanced"! they even tell you so themselves! they report, YOU decide!

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Thursday, 31 July 2003 15:30 (twenty-two years ago)

Holy crap!
you think Fox acts in its own shareholders' interests before the, uh, common good?
someone alert the media! corporate entities acting in their own self-interest at the expense of truth!
You should work for CNN Bob.

Horace Mann (Horace Mann), Thursday, 31 July 2003 15:33 (twenty-two years ago)

hehe, sorry for stating the obvious, i mean sky news in the uk is a little more subtle with its warmongering (its still there though), and i figured fox would be similar. but when i got there, i was shocked by fox, i mean it was so overt.

Bob Shaw (Bob Shaw), Thursday, 31 July 2003 15:44 (twenty-two years ago)

i was shocked by fox, i mean it was so overt.

Not more so than CNN or the other US news channels. Tis force of habit: be blunt and have a narrow focus, that makes for better television.

Complete bollocks.
