the first time i quit my job it was because a girl i was seeing at the office dumped me. because, she said, it was too weird to work together and date each other at the same time - so she immediately started seeing the design director. i immediately went mad. in difft economic times i might have stayed on but i had an embarrassment of other opportunities so i actually wrote my resignation letter AS A WEB PAGE, including a .gif of my signature, and left a note with the URL on the design director's desk! haha what a twunt!

Once I got "taken off the schedule" pending a discussion with the general manager over some comps and voids that none of the managers remembered making (I never showed back up for that tearful reunion).
Every other time, I've found another job and just quit showing up.

Others I've usually been comfortable just to sit down with the boss and tell them verbally (usually there have been good reasons like moving, better job etc, and they are understanding.)
Once I was just fed up with my life, left at lunch break and never returned or called or nothing. With the exception of that one, obv., all instances inolved usually about a mth's notice but never less than 2 weeks.

And if you don't have a positive career change/opportunity to look forward to, well, making one up won't hurt. :) I dreaded leaving my last job and then I wrote a resignation letter, but decided it was best to tell my boss face-to-face - I think writing the letter first helped me figure out what to say. good luck!

After much thought, it is with regret that I now tender my resignation. I have enjoyed working with you all these last several years, and I appreciate the opportunities you have given me. I have learned so much during my tenure here at G_& S_, and I thank you all for your patience, kindness and support. I will miss you all, and wish the company continued success.
Very truly yours,
A.
P.S. Now that I have my last reference letter in hand, I must tell you that the preceding letter is a bag of lies - I loathe each and every one of you equally, I hope this shitbag company continues on it's downward spiral and ends up as it was meant to be: nothing more than a flaming bag of dog crap on the doorstep of life. You are all cordially invited to go fuck your hats, you elitist, scum-sucking, shit-eating, motherfucking cocksuckers.
See you in hell, asshats!

...I have a "friend" who may well be quitting his current job to take up another post, but this is actually the first time he has quit a job with another actually lined up. How is the best way for him to manage this? At what point does he hand in his notice at his current job? Does he need to sign something with his prospective employers first?

This is what I said:
I hereby resign my position as senior producer at K*** effective June 26, 2007.I have enjoyed every opportunity that [my company] has offered to me over the past eleven years. It has been, and always will be, a very valuable experience for me. The people I worked with weren't just fellow co-workers, but friends. It has been my pleasure to work with the team that [the company president] has assembled to facilitate the success for both radio stations. I look forward to hearing about more successes related to this company in the future.I will be happy to assist in any way during this final transition period.

Also, arranging last day/first day to give yourself a couple weeks of vacation: CLASSIC if you can do it.
― Rock Hardy, Tuesday, 12 June 2007 21:32 (nineteen years ago)
I didn't realize that my "sickness" showed that much!
I'm leaving here on good terms. I just had to get out of here before they took my red Swingline.
I'm heading for a job along the same lines, just not in radio. And I won't have the general public gnawing my ear off on the telephone for three hours a day.
Rock, I get three days off plus the weekend before going into the new place. Really, any more than that and I would've got too antsy.

Man. That was a great week.

I am semi-procrastinating on telling my boss that I was offered a new job Friday afternoon (less stress I HOPE, more $$$$), partially because I have work I need to get done (obviously, since I'm posting!), and partially because the dude's a leathernecked mule-headed SOB that's as likely to cuss me out as he is to help me transition my BS to other folks.
― David R., Monday, 2 July 2007 14:02 (eighteen years ago)
i aimed to tell my boss face to face that i was leaving in a month but he was away so i had to do it via email. still not told my co workers though. they might already know though.

The last time I was between jobs, I sat on the couch for a week, eating fried shrimp and watching coverage of the Oklahoma City bombing.
I have never been between jobs (as I have only had one job). The only time I was *between* things (in a non pervy way) was when I quit university, had a vacation.... and then A WEEKEND OFF before I started The Job. Well, I have had days off (of course), but never in such a deliriously wicked non-commital way ever since.
