I'm checking my email for free on Spring Street in Soho on the really sexy new 12" Powerbook, and there are really cute Mac geeks wandering around. I think I'm in heaven

And Flaming Lips is playing on the PA

Chris Barrus to thread!

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 25 July 2003 20:50 (twenty-two years ago)

Actually, far too limiting, that. Orbit to thread! N. to thread! All of us who know the Truth to thread! :-)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 25 July 2003 20:51 (twenty-two years ago)

Free email is nice, although Kirna Zabete, a block away, has had that for longer, as well as cute clothes and clothes-shoppers, who are more my thing than Mac-shoppers.

Also, Flaming Lips = insta-dud.

The technowonderland feeling is enjoyable, though.

Oh! To be able to afford a G5!

Kenan Hebert (kenan), Friday, 25 July 2003 21:02 (twenty-two years ago)

seriously. + I've been eyeing some Apple laptops for a little while now actually. they are very very nice.

s1utsky (slutsky), Friday, 25 July 2003 21:08 (twenty-two years ago)

Phil, I'm responding writing on my super-hot Titanium PowerBook G4. I have Fleetwood Mac's Tusk LP playing.

Sean (Sean), Friday, 25 July 2003 21:47 (twenty-two years ago)

Classic all the way!

Apple Stores are great instant-free unlimited wireless points. I've taken advance of the one in Pasadena several times.

(writing this on my PowerBook G4. Chapterhouse playing right now)

Chris Barrus (Chris Barrus), Friday, 25 July 2003 22:51 (twenty-two years ago)

I've taken advance.../

Well, we were the in advance for the free T-shirts, but this is a surprising new usage ;-)

the Apple Store in the Detroit mall I went to was sort of cool. But they still haven't released the new 15.4" laptops because they are deliberately trying to piss me off. Plus now with the car repair bill I can't afford one anyway. Fucking shit.

Millar (Millar), Saturday, 26 July 2003 16:52 (twenty-two years ago)

My G4 Powerbook has taken to making a very frightening buzzing/tone/noise from the left speaker at startup/ at random. I will love it until it dies, but I am afraid death is near.
I share your pain about car repair bills; it will prevent me from replacing it.
AARRGGHHHH ..typing while i still can.

Orbit (Orbit), Saturday, 26 July 2003 16:55 (twenty-two years ago)

I had a dream about buying Apple laptops. I accidentally bought two and they didn't look anything like what they were supposed to. Then I banged them up. It was banal and upsetting.

s1utsky (slutsky), Saturday, 26 July 2003 16:57 (twenty-two years ago)

"super-hot" as in sexy ooh-la-la hot? or "super-hot" as in burn-your-lap hot, cuz mine seems to have overheating problems... or is that normal?

phil-two (phil-two), Saturday, 26 July 2003 18:11 (twenty-two years ago)

Screw Apple. Charging $125+ for a minor OS upgrade, trying to charge you $50 to call tech support because the OEM hard drive went bad...

It really sucks that I hate the company and their practices (and prices) so much - because using it is heaven compared to Windows.

miloauckerman (miloauckerman), Saturday, 26 July 2003 18:14 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm not sure the upgrades are that minor; they just market them all as OS X rather than give that up for the unglamorous OS 11. But I suspect 10.1 and 10.2 and 10.3 are about as different as Systems 7, 8, and 9 were.

i use both and my mac crashes about twice as much.

I stopped in the downtown Chicago store last week. It was a bit too crowded for me. I hadn't the nerve to brush a tourist aside to check my email. The new iBooks look nice, though, not that I'll ever be able to afford a computer.

amateurist (amateurist), Sunday, 27 July 2003 19:24 (twenty-two years ago)

The Apple Store and all that is in it is fabulous.

Orbit (Orbit), Sunday, 27 July 2003 19:25 (twenty-two years ago)

The Apple store in Soho is a total dud. They should have made it more mock proletarian instead of faux Koolhaas. Stores in suburbia may be better -- I hope. Too much clean gleaming lines and temple of cool rectitide -- not aided by the fool chimps giving Powerpoint demonstrations on the back podium. And nothing in there costs less than $300 -- save the $12.99 cleaning pads. They should have more touristy stuff -- stickers and notebooks and such.

Mary (Mary), Sunday, 27 July 2003 19:43 (twenty-two years ago)

Or apples!

N. (nickdastoor), Sunday, 27 July 2003 22:32 (twenty-two years ago)

We don't have Apple Stores here but there are places called B. Mac which also sell art supplies, probably a branding effort to link Macs with some general idea of creativity.

s1utsky (slutsky), Sunday, 27 July 2003 22:52 (twenty-two years ago)

Plus these tables are like a foot too low for comfort, probably to discourage exactly the type of electro-loitering that I have been doing here during the past 30 minutes' rainshower.

Paul Eater (eater), Monday, 4 August 2003 20:16 (twenty-two years ago)

eight months pass...
I have to say that my first visit to the one here was horrible. All these horible yuppies wanking over $500 laptop bags and peripherals. And the way all of the sales assistants pull out their iPods to retrieve information about prices, etc. Free classes sound good, though.

Maybe the Market St store is an example of the worst of SF rather than the worst of Apple consumers, I don't know.
