Holidays: Favorites and Hates

I have decided that July 4th is my favorite holiday. I have no use for Christmas. Discuss.

Millar (Millar), Saturday, 26 July 2003 18:04 (twenty-two years ago)

My favorite is Christmas, even though I'm an agnostic. Even with the consumer angle, it's still about happiness and togetherness and giving. Good music, too.

Juneteenth is interesting in Texas, a celebration of when Texas slaves found out they were free.

I don't care for any of the other holidays, with Valentine's Day and July 4th being my two least favorite.

miloauckerman (miloauckerman), Saturday, 26 July 2003 18:11 (twenty-two years ago)

Christmas seems to get worse and worse each year. The only joy I get from it now is seeing my little cousins experience it. Oh, and my mom's lasagna, possibly my favorite food ever, which I only have then and at Easter.
Thanksgiving means turkey. I like turkey. Plus: 4 day weekend.

I find Halloween annoying, and it just keeps becoming a bigger deal (at least here in the Midwest--people are starting to decorate their houses a la Xmas, which never happened when I was a kid).
New Year's Day I don't care for much either. Too much pressure to have THE BEST TIME. I don't even know what I'm celebrating, other than an arbitrary date in time. Maybe I should look at that overthinking thread...

oops (Oops), Saturday, 26 July 2003 18:41 (twenty-two years ago)

I don't care one way or the other about New Year's, but for me it's cursed.

'99 - flu
'00 - passed out on back whilst vomiting
'01 - work AND flu
'02 - food poisoning

So the one year in recent memory I managed to stay healthy, I still nearly killed myself.

miloauckerman (miloauckerman), Saturday, 26 July 2003 20:14 (twenty-two years ago)

guy fawkes day roXors u r all gay

Tad (llamasfur), Saturday, 26 July 2003 20:21 (twenty-two years ago)

TS: holidays that fall on the same day every year vs holidays that fall on the same day of the week every year.

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Saturday, 26 July 2003 20:41 (twenty-two years ago)

same day every year; I always forget the other kind.

xmas day is fine but I would gladly give it up if I could also give up the two months of madness preceding. The christmas I spent in Rome was the best, and not just because I was in Rome, but because it was so much more chill.

I like thanksgiving for the food and family, even though it's sometimes a hassle and I now realize I'll be explaining my vegetarianism every year until I die. Fourth of july is pretty awesome because things explode. Halloween is theoretically my favorite, but I haven't been able to dress up the last couple of years and that makes me sad.

Destroy: Valentine's Day.

teeny (teeny), Saturday, 26 July 2003 21:00 (twenty-two years ago)

I don't like it when people don't like Christmas. That is all.

Ally (mlescaut), Sunday, 27 July 2003 06:15 (twenty-two years ago)

I don't like Christmas one bit. But Ally and I were never meant to be.

I love Halloween more than anything in the world. People still remember my Devo costume from about six years ago. NOBODY remembers what I bought people for Christmas six years ago, not me, and not the people who got the gifts. Christmas is lame.

Kenan Hebert (kenan), Sunday, 27 July 2003 06:18 (twenty-two years ago)

i like xmas. i don't like buying people shit for xmas, though, 'cause i'm cheap.

Tad (llamasfur), Sunday, 27 July 2003 06:19 (twenty-two years ago)

Gifts are not the purpose of Christmas.

Ally (mlescaut), Sunday, 27 July 2003 06:19 (twenty-two years ago)

But even apart from the gifts, isn't it just kind of the same shit every year? Same music, same stupid sweaters, same trips to the mall... I don't look forward to it.

Kenan Hebert (kenan), Sunday, 27 July 2003 06:20 (twenty-two years ago)

And I hate my family. That really nails it shut.

Kenan Hebert (kenan), Sunday, 27 July 2003 06:23 (twenty-two years ago)

what, are you charlie brown now?

Tad (llamasfur), Sunday, 27 July 2003 06:24 (twenty-two years ago)

Eternally.

*sigh*

Kenan Hebert (kenan), Sunday, 27 July 2003 06:24 (twenty-two years ago)

I haven't spent Christmas with my family in years.

Ally (mlescaut), Sunday, 27 July 2003 06:24 (twenty-two years ago)

So... not to prod, but just because I'm curious... what do you like about Christmas?

Kenan Hebert (kenan), Sunday, 27 July 2003 06:25 (twenty-two years ago)

you should!

Tad (llamasfur), Sunday, 27 July 2003 06:25 (twenty-two years ago)

See, I don't do holidays with family. But my holiday thoughts would take a frickin essay, and it would be boring.

I dig Thanksgiving cause I can take as long as I want in the kitchen and people expect it. I dig Christmas cause I do and cause Rankin-Bass 0wnz and cause, well, I wrote and licensed a Christmas-themed product, which means Christmas = royalty checks. I dig Halloween cause there's usually seasonally-inappropriate eye candy. I dig Easter cause, yo, Cadbury. I dig the Fourth cause we like the stars, the stars that go boom. I dig St Paddy's cause of the shakes shamr0x0r.

heat miser rules of course! (the big-hair dude, not wanker elliot smith's band)

Tad (llamasfur), Sunday, 27 July 2003 06:28 (twenty-two years ago)

I love December and I love the lights and the cookies and the snow and sitting with my friends and listening to "Christmas (Baby Please Come Home)" and having a candy cane and sending out cards and giving money to Santa Clauses with bells and maybe even one day ice skating.

Ally (mlescaut), Sunday, 27 July 2003 06:29 (twenty-two years ago)

He's Mr Green Christmas
He's Mr Sun
He's Mr Heat Blister
He's Mr 101

Damn straight.

Tep (ktepi), Sunday, 27 July 2003 06:30 (twenty-two years ago)

that should be a holiday-time FAP ... ice-skating at Rockefeller Center. i would show up for that one, i promise!

Tad (llamasfur), Sunday, 27 July 2003 06:30 (twenty-two years ago)

Actually, I like all those things, too. But I hate shopping and stress and worrying about money and being with my family. And those things usually overshadow all the rest of it.

Kenan Hebert (kenan), Sunday, 27 July 2003 06:30 (twenty-two years ago)

See, you can ditch that part, Kenan. I mean, it depends on your family to an extent, I suppose, and geography, but honestly -- that's why I don't do holidays with family. I think there's so much pressure for folks to do those things with their family that no one ends up actually liking it, it's just a mutual obligation. So I don't. I see them other times, when all of us better appreciate it because it's voluntary.

(And like I said -- all that's gonna depend on the family.)

Tep (ktepi), Sunday, 27 July 2003 06:32 (twenty-two years ago)

I'd much prefer to spend, say, Labor Day with my family. We could all float down some river on intertubes and drink Tecate. That'd be nice.

Kenan Hebert (kenan), Sunday, 27 July 2003 06:34 (twenty-two years ago)

Do that! (Do you have the option of skipping the family stuff for Christmas? I mean, it's tough if they live next door, but then again you could have your own sitcom called Everybody Loves Kenan.)

Tep (ktepi), Sunday, 27 July 2003 06:35 (twenty-two years ago)

My best Christmas: I had to work the day before and the day after, so my Mom came up from Houston, and we shot pool in the one bar in town that was open on Christmas day.

Kenan Hebert (kenan), Sunday, 27 July 2003 06:37 (twenty-two years ago)

I wouldn't mind seeing my family on the holidays.

We can have a holiday FAP though, that's a good idea.

Ally (mlescaut), Sunday, 27 July 2003 06:38 (twenty-two years ago)

When someone says the word "Christmas," I hear Paul McCartney singing "Siiiimply / Haaaaaving..." etc, and I get the fear.

Kenan Hebert (kenan), Sunday, 27 July 2003 06:39 (twenty-two years ago)

I dig Christmas music. Embarrassingly much. Every winter, I queue up all the Christmas tunes in Winamp and blast away, and OD on peppermint sticks and mulled wine and write my annual Christmas story (which is usually about baseball or dead people, granted).

Tep (ktepi), Sunday, 27 July 2003 06:40 (twenty-two years ago)

Sometimes I listen to Christmas musich when it is not Christmas.

Ally (mlescaut), Sunday, 27 July 2003 06:42 (twenty-two years ago)

if someone would remind me, then we can def. do a rockefeller center ice-skating fap during the holidays.

o tannenbaum, o tannenbaum, du hast mir eingefallen! (or something like that)

Tad (llamasfur), Sunday, 27 July 2003 06:43 (twenty-two years ago)

I have pulled out Willie Nelson's "Pretty Paper" on rare occasion in the summer. OK, I guess I don;t hate Christmas. I hate feeling obligated to go completely broke. That's my real hate.

Kenan Hebert (kenan), Sunday, 27 July 2003 06:44 (twenty-two years ago)

Ally out-Christmases me.

(I wrote a Christmas sermon, though! Well, and the game. Okay, it's a tie.)

Tep (ktepi), Sunday, 27 July 2003 06:45 (twenty-two years ago)

when i was a little tad, i sang in my church choir. we had to sing all of the traditional hymns (like "adeste fidelis"), plus since the church where i went had lots of slovaks and poles we learned to sing x-mas songs in slovak and polish.

Tad (llamasfur), Sunday, 27 July 2003 06:46 (twenty-two years ago)

Kenan, just give everyone those gay homemade tickets that say "Good for one complimentary blow job" or something

oops (Oops), Sunday, 27 July 2003 06:46 (twenty-two years ago)

Man, that is gay.

Kenan Hebert (kenan), Sunday, 27 July 2003 06:48 (twenty-two years ago)

I was so just thinking that.

oops (Oops), Sunday, 27 July 2003 06:49 (twenty-two years ago)

I don't hate holidays!!!

jel -- (jel), Sunday, 27 July 2003 07:34 (twenty-two years ago)

i like them all

christmas eve is best (though technically thats not actually a public holiday here!!)

gareth (gareth), Sunday, 27 July 2003 09:22 (twenty-two years ago)

My university closes down for a week and a half every Christmas, and none of this time comes out of my holiday allocation, so that one is best. I like the music too (I made two C90s of Christmas music for pals). Trouble is, Christmas holidays were some of the best and happiest times with my ex-wife, so there is a twinge or two from that.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Sunday, 27 July 2003 13:23 (twenty-two years ago)

There is a lot of Christmas music out there which I enjoy, actually. But that holiday still pisses me straight off. Let's not even get into the religious and societal side of it - WHO THE HELL THOUGHT PASTING UP THE ENTIRE TOWN IN GREEN AND RED WAS A GOOD IDEA? EVER? wtf.

Millar (Millar), Sunday, 27 July 2003 16:53 (twenty-two years ago)

Dude, go to New Orleans. A lot of people just stick to the Mardi Gras colors: purple, green, and gold. Less Vision, more Joker.

Tep (ktepi), Sunday, 27 July 2003 18:17 (twenty-two years ago)

(New Orleans New Orleans blah blah blah)

Tep in every post ever (ktepi), Sunday, 27 July 2003 18:18 (twenty-two years ago)

you forgot to mention moxie then.

teeny (teeny), Sunday, 27 July 2003 18:19 (twenty-two years ago)

what, no boxing day enthusiasts?

Tad (llamasfur), Sunday, 27 July 2003 18:20 (twenty-two years ago)

(New Orleans New Orleans MOXIE boopy doo writing la la la pineapple zombie blowjobs shaboom)

Tep in every post ever, revised (ktepi), Sunday, 27 July 2003 18:25 (twenty-two years ago)

I like the All Souls/All Saints holiday. It gives everyone a chance to think of relatives and friends who have passed away and then burn old furniture on the village green.

Lara (Lara), Sunday, 27 July 2003 18:28 (twenty-two years ago)

My worst holiday was going on holiday with my girlfriend and we went to Gatwick by mistake instead of Luton (long story). And she blamed me and I blamed her, and we had the hump with each other for the whole holiday and nearly split up on the Thursday.

thoth (Jake Proudlock), Sunday, 27 July 2003 21:08 (twenty-two years ago)

Gareth OTM about Christmas Eve. Since my family isn't Christian we'd do Christmas shit all on Christmas Eve just cos my mom liked the sound of "Christmas Eve" better than just Christmas. For a while she wanted to celebrate "Boxing Day" but wasnt' sure what was done for it.

Yeah, I'm not sure why we celebrated Christmas in light of my parents deciding to denounce their religions and convert to other things, wtf.

Ally (mlescaut), Sunday, 27 July 2003 23:38 (twenty-two years ago)

you box on boxing day, duh.

Tad (llamasfur), Sunday, 27 July 2003 23:55 (twenty-two years ago)

Best holiday ever, then. Actually my mom was also really gung ho on actually starting up Festivus a la Seinfeld. I think she just really wanted to fight us for some reason.

Ally (mlescaut), Monday, 28 July 2003 00:10 (twenty-two years ago)

I have decided that any holiday where I get a the day off work is a favorite, any holiday where I don't get the day off is one of my least favorites. That is my only criteria.

Larcole (Nicole), Monday, 28 July 2003 00:12 (twenty-two years ago)

get a government job, you'll be one happy mofo then

Tad (llamasfur), Monday, 28 July 2003 00:15 (twenty-two years ago)

except you get paid shit and have to work with other government people all day.

Millar (Millar), Monday, 28 July 2003 00:21 (twenty-two years ago)

i didn't say that there wouldn't be trade-offs

Tad (llamasfur), Monday, 28 July 2003 00:22 (twenty-two years ago)

Guess what: take out "government" from your statement Tom and you just described every job ever besides, like, supermodel.

Ally (mlescaut), Monday, 28 July 2003 00:25 (twenty-two years ago)

romance novelist

Millar (Millar), Monday, 28 July 2003 01:33 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah, but that presents its own problems, mainly being a romance novelist.

S: christmas, groundhog day, hallowe'en, thanksgiving
D: columbus day, presidents day, valentine's day

J.D. (Justyn Dillingham), Sunday, 16 April 2006 02:29 (nineteen years ago)

See now, I dont think of Valentine's as a "holiday" because well, you don't get a day off, and maybe thats a cultural thing but to me holiday means "day of celebration, usually off of work". Tho I know the etymology means nothin' of the sort of course.

All holidays are good to me, as they usually mean a day off, unless I'm on some kind of crappy-crap helpdesk roster and have to work overtime :(

We get different days to you guys tho: altho we get easter and xmas (and actual time off for such), no one here celebrates halloween, and the other hols are american. Our equivalents are Labor day, Queens birthday, ANZAC day, and in Melbourne we get Melbourne Cup day. Who else but us would get a day off work for a horse race I ask you.

Trayce (trayce), Sunday, 16 April 2006 03:40 (nineteen years ago)

Oh and you can't beat an aussie christmas: searing heat, seafood BBQs, roasts (if your mum is insane and insists on cooking on even tho it is 45C inside the kitchen), beer and champers and more beer, etc.

Trayce (trayce), Sunday, 16 April 2006 03:41 (nineteen years ago)
