You need to talk to Emma who has apparently become a Sudafed fiend since last I saw her.

Tom, Friday, 21 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

sounds like a far better day than i'm having. maybe i need to get infected with something.

jess, Friday, 21 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

what i liked best abt being ill when small was i. odd food prepared by a loved one (eg lime marmalade samwidges w.crushed penicillin in em, when i had pneumonia aged five); ii. presents bought by whoever is caring and worried you are bored: when they are actually quite boring and/or useless, they are somehow mysteriously charming and memorable (eg a highwayman's cardboard gun when I had chickenpox age 10: wtf!! but I remember it very well)

mark s, Friday, 21 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Penicillin crushed up in bread is probably how someone will murder me someday. I'm allergic see? Going back to the topic once you dont have any more fucked up dreams about me and the human league thats fine mark. You never explained what the hell that was about either.

Ronan, Friday, 21 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Mmmm, Sudafed tickly dry coughs linctus. Not only has it stopped my consumptive cough it is also an appetite suppressant. I cannot wait to start drinking in approximately 2 hours to see how that goes.....

Emma, Friday, 21 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

It sounds like you've got the same thing as I have. I'm just lolling around the house, listening to mp3s, THHGTTG and pissing about on the internet. I need a not too taxing good book to read, but I can't find one I fancy in the flat and going out to buy one will defeat the point of not going to work today.

Richard Tunnicliffe, Friday, 21 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

by the time i wrote it down ronan that's all i cd remember: that you were involved and the HL were made of chocolate; i *never* have violent or sexy dreams so rest easy on that score: they are all silly or cerebral (or both)

mark s, Friday, 21 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

How was I involved? As a name in typed text on the screen? Mark S you so crazy

Ronan, Friday, 21 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

i don't recall exactly but i think you kept asking questions. did i dream what you looked like? i forget: but i can make something up and you will never know...

mark s, Friday, 21 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Sounds like Mark S is dosing himself up for a hyper-intense fever dream roundabout Duffy time tonight...

Andrew L, Friday, 21 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

too much caffeine (= miracle ingredient in anadin extra yum yum) can in fact induce mild hypnogogic sleep paralysis attacks, to which i am quite prone: i once dreamed that luminous rats were eating zigzag tunnels in the walls eep and there was one on my chest eating me EEP!! and i shouted and woke the whole house and lo! there was no such rat...

(UberKewl fact abt HSP: you sometimes dream w.yr eyes open, so dream includes actual information fed in from yr actual bedroom (or other) surroundings)

mark s, Friday, 21 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

i haf dreamt abt ronan and dave q but never duffy (sp) chiz chiz: tonite's the night imeo

mark s, Friday, 21 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Who would make better dream material: Billy Duffy or Stephen "Tin Tin" Duffy?

Nicole, Friday, 21 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Or Duffy from Casualty?

Richard Tunnicliffe, Friday, 21 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

karen duffy.

fred solinger, Friday, 21 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

weathering illness update: raz greatest hits; if you're feeling sinister; and and hefted the arcades project to my bedside but actually carried on reading dune [liet-kynes has just been killed by the ecology of his own planet]

mark s, Friday, 21 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

raz = rza obv; and i haf now swapped b&s for aaliyah

mark s, Friday, 21 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

mark, you poor dear, don't even try and type, just help yourself to some chicken soup and plenty o' vitamin c.

fred solinger, Friday, 21 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I'd never EVER get away with this. My mother/boss would drag me out of bed to the shop. She taught me to be disciplined. Take some anadin if you have to, but don't let a minor illness get in the way. When she had cancer - twice actually - she continued working as long as she could.

nathalie, Friday, 21 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Nathalie, there's nothing more offputting than a shop assistant with a sneeze (esp. in a lace shop, I would've thought!)

Andrew L, Friday, 21 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

"get away" with WHAT?! I am genuinely ill (just not very). now i am abt to watch cleopatra 2525 while dosing self w. spinach soup (nigella lawson's recipe my variation) w. lemon, rice and avocado

i note that duffy (sp) doesn't start till TWO O'CLOCK IN THE MORNING!!

mark s, Friday, 21 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Is having flu changing how you hear the music/read/watch TV mark? Once actually genuinely enjoyed an episode of neighbours in similar state, allbeit with the aid of inappropiate medication. Get back to bed, + get well soon.

stevo, Friday, 21 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I'm kinda ill, I have the beginnings of a bad headache... I should be going to a gig this evening but I can't tell if it's one of those ominous feelings that will just go away or if it's going to turn into a fully blown bastard.

Beer, though, is the deciding factor. If there is none in the house, I must seek it...

emil.y, Friday, 21 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I went to school with someone whose surname was Duffy and I thought he was dreamy at the time. Ahh, nostalgia.

mark s: please tell more about these hypnogogic sleep paralysis attacks, I had this weird thing a month ago when I spent ten hours with bursts of heartbeat growing ever more thunderous before passing out/falling asleep only to wake up a short time later unable to work out whether anything prior to losing consciousness was real or dreamt (and still feeling dazed and out of it). I spent the next two days feeling really vacant, too. I don't know that I actually dreamed anything, though, and I suspect it wasn't that, but I'm curious since I don't know what it was. It did, however, mean I had to go and have blood tests and ECG scans and get told to give up caffeine and alcohol (bah).

being ill (only not very, but enough to convince yourself you need to spend all day at home/in bed) = simultaneously mildly classic and very dud, and seemingly my chosen lifestyle. Get well soon, mark.

Rebecca, Friday, 21 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

HYPNOGOGIC SLEEP PARALYSIS for mark s =
You fall asleep and start to dream. The dream starts "normally" but quite quickly becomes very murky and oppressive: things are following you, objects are mutating, things are lurking just beyond the light, you are paralysed, you are suffocating. Struggling AGAINST all this is futile: you can however — if you think of it — wake yourself up and escape by going WITH the sensation, allowing yourself to drift and swoon. You get a sensation of flying, swooping and soaring away from whatever it is. Until you find yourself actually awake, heart pumping somewhat fast (if you DO wake yourself by struggling, your heart will REALLY be pumping). Now and then, it is Lucid Dreaming: ie you're aware it's HSP and consciously take action (this tends to be when the dream ALL BLACK, and has no backstory to speak of). And as noted up- thread, you sometimes dream with yr eyes open, and the items in yr bedroom or wherever appear in distorted form (eg there's a funny shaped patch of sky I can right through my flat from my bed, through several rooms out of a window on the opposite and between some tall chimneys: in one dream it manifested as a glowing sculpture, the same SHAPE as the patch of sky, but just in front of my face). Occasionally you have to travel through a sequence of wake-ups before you actually properly wake. I get it maybe once a month; when I was in my late teens/early 20s, abt once a week, which I blame on that legendary psychotropic nescafé (granules not powder).

mark s, Saturday, 22 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Mark, is this the same thing as when I think I've woken up and I'm being strangled or crushed by someone? It happened the other night and has happened a couple of times before. Really scary with a powerless feeling and can't get out of it, until i realise it's a dream, relax and come out of it. Really reall odd I tells ya

chris, Saturday, 22 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

This is what "hag-ridden" means, isn't it? Dreaming that something horrible and menacing is sitting on yr chest? I always sleep on my side so that particular sensation isn't so acute. It's apparently pretty common, so I guess it's the same, Chris. I've had to endure it for more than 30 years and it doesn't bother me any more in itself, though the super-brooding dream content can sometimes get a bit intense.

mark s, Saturday, 22 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

So I missed Buffy. What happened?

suzy, Saturday, 22 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

cancelled (= the terrorists have won?)

mark s, Saturday, 22 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Bastards. I mean, I was not churlish about taking it off for the Brit Prayer Service but PUT IT ON SOME OTHER TIME, right?

suzy, Saturday, 22 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

The Simpsons was also cancelled last night because of the bloody tennis.

Andrew L, Saturday, 22 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

sad update: i tht I was healed and went shopping in M&S — now i am flushed and dizzy and wheezing asthmatically pah and going back to bed shortly ps i finished dune

mark s, Saturday, 22 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

My friend AL gets that sleep paralysis thingy quite regularly, he dreams about being attacked by a totally black (or sometimes grey) human-shaped figure. He tells me, I ascribe it to all the acid he did a couple of years ago, he tells LC's sister, she says it's the Devil, visiting him in his sleep, trying to split AL and LC up cos God intends that they stay together 4EVA! I laugh.

DG, Saturday, 22 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

still ignoring the arcades project (i am ill!! gimme a break!!) so started reading my friend ken hollings' just-published novel DESTROY ALL MONSTERS, only to be rung up by ken himself. he is on the radio tonight (mike allen, lbc, starts 9.oo tho ken will be on at 9.30): kh writes for bizarre and fortean times and = dark prince of hilarious conspiracy theory, so it cd be entertaining: we talked abt the stockhausen gaffe, and ken described how the director of the barbican — there is a stockhausen season there in ctober — defended our favourite bonkers composer on the radio yesterday: "Yes but we should certainly all pay attention to his music: this is the man that influenced talvin singh and bjork..."

mark s, Saturday, 22 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

we should certainly all pay attention to his music: this is the man that influenced talvin singh and bjork

Gawd, reductio ad absurdam, or something.

When I had GLANDULAR FEVER I remember 2 hallucinations/waking dreams

1/ seeing real world & world ov dreams overlaid as if 2 slides placed 1 on top of other

2/ (this one better) flourescent purple & pink ferrets leaping over my feet @ thee bottom ov thee bed.

Get well soon MS, or we will bring lucozade in GLASS BOTTLE w/ CRACKLY CELLOPHANE

xoxo
