Pregnancy Question for those who have given birth...

OK, so my best mate just phoned me, she's due in 6 weeks but she's been crampy for a few days and last night she woke up and her bed was wet - she went to the docs and they are sending her to the hospital. Her mum is on holiday and I'm supposed to look after her and support etc if anything happens while she's away. Her brother is driving her to the hospital just now and she's gonna let me know how things go. Question is, is she in labour? Should I drop everything and run to her now or save my support for when she really needs it?

i would wait to hear from her borther & decide then whether you should go to the hospital.

But then i've not had a baby yet, so what do i know?

Pinkpanther (Pinkpanther), Monday, 28 July 2003 08:23 (twenty-two years ago)

Me either which is why I'm not sure, she doesn't sound like she's panicing or anything but that may change if she gets to the hospital and is actually in labour! It's her little bro thats with her and he is in a right state - I'm meant to be the calming influence!

smee (smee), Monday, 28 July 2003 08:34 (twenty-two years ago)

is she having contractions yet?

Pinkpanther (Pinkpanther), Monday, 28 July 2003 08:36 (twenty-two years ago)

Nope and they aren't even sure if her waters have broken - apparently theres 2 lots of waters that can break - I've never heard of that before!

smee (smee), Monday, 28 July 2003 08:37 (twenty-two years ago)

I would just hang on for a bit if I was you. let her bro call you & go from there.

Pinkpanther (Pinkpanther), Monday, 28 July 2003 08:40 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah I think thats prolly best coz it might be a flase alram and me turning up could just embarass the hell out of her. I'll never get any work done today though, I'm all worried.

smee (smee), Monday, 28 July 2003 08:53 (twenty-two years ago)

Don't worry smee, she's in the best place if anything is wrong, but I'm sure there's nothing to worry about. If you really are that worried tho, go to the hopsital to see her, she wont be embarassed I bet, she might appreciate the female company.

Thanks, I'm gonna wait until after lunchtime, if I've not heard anything I'm heading up there!

smee (smee), Monday, 28 July 2003 09:09 (twenty-two years ago)

Keep us informed!! (good luck btw!)

Pinkpanther (Pinkpanther), Monday, 28 July 2003 09:10 (twenty-two years ago)

She probably just wet herself. These things happen.

Her waters may have partially broken - sometimes there can be a tiny rupture in the membrane which sort of self-seals again afterwards if she doesn't move about too much or do anything energetic.

When the waters really do break, it's unmistakeable, as there's a lot of fluid (imagine having a bladder full after a night on the booze and being bursting for a wee.....that much fluid!)

Niggly crampy pains are quite usual during the last few weeks, but believe me, when the contractions start for real, she will not mistake this for anything else. It's like being repeatedly smacked in the stomach with a baseball bat.

I should imagine the hospital will keep her in for a day or two and make sure she rests. They will probably give her a scan to take measurements of the baby's head, arms and legs, and they will then decide whether or not to induce her labour. (When the waters break, the baby isn't in a sterile environment any more and they might decide that if she is leaking fluid then they ought to get the whole thing over with sooner rather than later for the baby's sake).

If it were me, I'd just telephone the hospital for an update. Explain you are the mother's "birthing partner" or something, and they'll probably be extremely helpful. You might find (if they are short of beds) they might even send her home again until something actually starts happening.

Wish your friend lots of luck from me! Has she picked any names yet?

C J (C J), Monday, 28 July 2003 09:44 (twenty-two years ago)

Don't mention the baseball bat thing to her, m'kay?

C J (C J), Monday, 28 July 2003 09:46 (twenty-two years ago)

Cheers CJ, again I am in complete awe of your vast knowledge! I think I'll phone them before I go up there then, sounds like it is prolly just a false alarm, fingers crossed. She's got names picked but she keeps changing her mind!

I'll def not say anything about a baseball bat, she's freaked out enough doing this shit on her own.

smee (smee), Monday, 28 July 2003 09:49 (twenty-two years ago)

Just in case anyone is interested, she's fine - they told her pretty much what CJ said. Once again I'm in awe of the All Seeing All Knowing CJ (henceforth to be known as the Trash Heap - in an affectionate way, obv..)

smee (smee), Monday, 28 July 2003 13:43 (twenty-two years ago)

Trash Heap??!?!

You make me feel so dirrrty :p

(Glad yr friend is okay)

C J (C J), Monday, 28 July 2003 13:45 (twenty-two years ago)

Did you not watch the Fraggles? When ever they wanted to know something they visited the "All Seeing All Knowing Trash Heap". I'm off to google....

Hahahaha!

Marjorie looks like a half-decomposed Edna Everage! (and not unlike me first thing in the morning with a thumping hangover). Excellent.

C J (C J), Monday, 28 July 2003 14:10 (twenty-two years ago)

It was more the All Seeing All Knowing bit I was going for than the image, honest....

smee (smee), Monday, 28 July 2003 14:11 (twenty-two years ago)

That's great news Smee. I hope to be like the all knowing CJ one day! *sigh*
