It depends a good deal on where in the city you live, and whether or not you have lots of money or an exceptionally smart kid (there are magnet schools in New Orleans -- public schools you can go to if you qualify -- but they are not generally easy to get into). Drinking-wise, it works out pretty well -- there's very little in the way of DUI accidents and so on in the city, except the ones caused by tourists.
