RFI: Rounders

OK, so I have in a moment of insanity signed up for a university staff sports day thing this Friday. I thought rounders looked like the most wussy option. However, I've since realised that a) I haven't played it since I was 8 and have no idea how to and b) the other people on the team include very senior staff in my department.

Help me to survive this with my dignity (and my job) intact. Rules? Tictacs? Appropriate clothing?

Shorts and t-shirt. Hold the bat in one hand, hit the ball and run like buggery. Remember - you ain't allowed to run past anyone else on your team who's stalled at a base, because you'll run them out.

I love rounders, it's great fun. I used to be really good aswell. First thing's first though, which position will you be playing?

The last sport of any kind I played was rounders. I wasn't good at it but I wasn't rotten either (i.e. I managed to hit the ball). It was a works team-building exercise though so not actually fun.

What is the difference between rounders and baseball? Or rounders and softball for that matter?

I have to have a position?

I remember about the running past others bit now. Do you bowl underarm or overarm?

Archel (Archel), Tuesday, 29 July 2003 09:54 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh and do you keep holding the bat when you run? I suppose not because the next person has to have it... and how many people on a team?

Archel (Archel), Tuesday, 29 July 2003 09:56 (twenty-two years ago)

Haha what was I thinking when I signed up???

Archel (Archel), Tuesday, 29 July 2003 09:56 (twenty-two years ago)

Underarm.

If you are left handed and not the world's strongest hitter just miss the ball completely, as otherwise you end up hitting it straight at first base and getting out instantly. of course this might be your aim. If you miss the ball and run anyway you have a much better chance.

isn't there a rule that says that if you don't hit the ball then you can only run to first base?

Yep. I thought this thread was about rounders though, not dating.

NRA rounders rules include shooting opponents though, so I'm not recommending them to Archel. I was really good at this at juniour school, but haven't played it since then, so that's before most of you lot were born. We played in relatively confined spaces, so skill of placement was generally better than big hitting, which would just bounce off a wall/fence.

eight months pass...
I never followed this up did I? Well I was rubbish obv but the wussy Humanities team borrowed a beefy lady from Social and Cultural Studies and two random children so we did quite well in the end.

I also had to do unspeakable things involving Cadburys Cream Eggs, spoons, the Dean, and a football.
