One Drink Hangovers

For a while now, I've been getting hangovers after having had only, say, one beer the night before (e.g. like thsi morning). It's getting pretty disruptive and as far as I can tell, it's a really unusual problem..
Has anyone experienced this? Could there be something very wrong with me..? A far more sinister problem?

Yes, it's when you mean to say "a pint of bitter please" but instead you say "a tankard of absinthe, no don't worry about the sugar".

Sarah (starry), Thursday, 31 July 2003 08:46 (twenty-two years ago)

are you sure that it *is* actually a hangover rather than hangover symtoms casued by something else?

MarkH (MarkH), Thursday, 31 July 2003 08:47 (twenty-two years ago)

...or what Sarah said.

MarkH (MarkH), Thursday, 31 July 2003 08:47 (twenty-two years ago)

I thought this was a Gareth thread.

Mary (Mary), Thursday, 31 July 2003 08:48 (twenty-two years ago)

No, pretty sure these are hangovers, although prety mild one granted.. I have a pretty quiet routine these days and I'm getting a lot of sleep, but still I get this dizzy tiredness whenever I have a drink, so I can't see what else it could be..
Jeez the absinthe hangovers, I had an epic one one 2 weeks ago, so maybe I'm still reeling from it.. But drop the sugar honey, mix it with 7UP instead

Fabrice (Fabfunk), Thursday, 31 July 2003 08:59 (twenty-two years ago)

Could it be allergies to alcohol perhaps? Just checking, you're not mixing alcohol with any medications are you?

Mary (Mary), Thursday, 31 July 2003 09:05 (twenty-two years ago)

nah nah.. and this is also a pretty new thing
On the other hand I can drink loads during w-e and feel fine the next day. It may have something to do with beer or just that I need two hours sleep extra for each drink I take.

Fabrice (Fabfunk), Thursday, 31 July 2003 09:10 (twenty-two years ago)

Try Everclear, you get a walloping hangover 20 MINUTES later! (Of course, in that 20-minute space you're about as fucked up as it's possible to be, alcoholically speaking)

dave q, Thursday, 31 July 2003 09:54 (twenty-two years ago)

The best of course, and the real sign of trouble, is the no-drink hangover. I've had 'em. It means your body is heavily indebted to alcohol and trying to remind you that you haven't had any for a while. Serious alcoholics I've known who have gone dead sober have told me they got these years later. One of my friends had one just yesterday!!

Millar (Millar), Thursday, 31 July 2003 10:28 (twenty-two years ago)

Someone I know said that if they only had one beer, they felt bad the next day, but if they had more, they were fine. ???

teeny (teeny), Thursday, 31 July 2003 12:03 (twenty-two years ago)

yeah, I can relate to that.. but how could that be?

Fabrice (Fabfunk), Thursday, 31 July 2003 12:16 (twenty-two years ago)

It happens if you drink Brooklyn Lager. A fine-tasting beer, but will fuck you bad in your head's future, even after a small amount.

Also, a hog's blood (whiskey & red wine), while a tremendous drink, will destroy the following day for you.

Hurlothrumbo (hurlothrumbo), Thursday, 31 July 2003 13:02 (twenty-two years ago)

Everclear is the devil. I wasn't going to drink when my friend and I went to New Orleans once. Unbeknownst to me she kept getting those Everclear slushies and kept making me hold hers. Of course I kept sipping them. End result, me puking the next day until 3pm and not being able to drink more than 2 drinks without getting nauseous for the next 2 years. I am now just getting over this.

Absinthe and 7-Up? Am i getting this right? I need to try this. I just had a great absinthe night the other night where a friend and I polished off half a bottle. I kept talking about running an 8 minute mile, which for some reason was cracking our shit up.

Maybe you are not taking preventative measures when drinking the one beer. You know when you do a big night out you make sure to drink lots of water and eat things. Maybe you just need to make sure to drink a lot water before going to bed.

Carey (Carey), Thursday, 31 July 2003 13:13 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah ..

This has been happening to me over the last year or two. I can't say that I get a hangover from one drink (unless it's fairly stiff/tall and I drink it right before going to bed) but I throw up consistently the next day after drinking. It hasn't happened in a while, but for quite a while after three pints or so I'd wake up in the morning and immediately have to throw up. Sometimes two or more times. It happened with such regularity as to be disturbing, but maybe it's done now. I blame shitty draft lager.

fields of salmon (fieldsofsalmon), Thursday, 31 July 2003 13:13 (twenty-two years ago)

it may be unsanitary plumbing (well, pipes) that they're running the kegs to the tap through. i'd mention it to the barkeep/manager and see if it's happening to anyone else. you'd be suprised how rarely some pubs clean these things. the bacteria build-up can be stifling.

gygax! (gygax!), Thursday, 31 July 2003 13:48 (twenty-two years ago)

most hangovers are caused by dehydration, and some vitamin depletion. make sure you drink at least a liter and a half of water a day (more if you drink caffeine or alcohol) and take yr vitamins!

praying mantis (praying mantis), Thursday, 31 July 2003 14:26 (twenty-two years ago)

seriously, gygax! = otm. if, fabrice, this keeps happening at the same pub/club, you should take a look into it.

after a particularly bad episode of the above, i went through a phase of only drinking bottled beer for about 4 months.

gygax! (gygax!), Thursday, 31 July 2003 17:22 (twenty-two years ago)

gygax! makes a good point. Are you frequenting the same establishment each time this happens? But I have to second the hydration factor. There's enough diuretic effect from even one beer to give you a headache the next day.

Mr. Diamond (diamond), Thursday, 31 July 2003 17:29 (twenty-two years ago)

Fabrice, I've been sideswiped by the "one beer bomb" too. Make sure you eat a meal before you dirnk, too.

Nichole Graham (Nichole Graham), Thursday, 31 July 2003 17:56 (twenty-two years ago)

Strangely enough, the worst hangovers I've ever had were from 2 or less drinks. Puking, crampy, achey, etc. If I get blasted I usually feel sort of groggy and dizzy the next day, but not much else.

Mandee, Thursday, 31 July 2003 18:10 (twenty-two years ago)

Is it smply that you are a big girl's blouse when it comes to booze? I ask purely for reasons of science.

Matt (Matt), Friday, 1 August 2003 01:04 (twenty-two years ago)

It's all about how the beer affects my sleep I think. Just after one beer, I start feeling unnaturally sleepy when I get home, but then the sleep I do eventually get is of very poor quality.. Hence, the next day although I might have slept 8 hours, it feels like I've only had three..

Fabrice (Fabfunk), Friday, 1 August 2003 06:47 (twenty-two years ago)

one year passes...
Ahh... one of my first ILE threads and how little has changed...

Baaderonixxxorzh (Fabfunk), Tuesday, 12 April 2005 12:24 (twenty years ago)

ten months pass...
Please make it stop...

Le Baaderonixx de Clignancourt (baaderonixx), Wednesday, 22 February 2006 12:07 (nineteen years ago)

drink more

ken c (ken c), Wednesday, 22 February 2006 12:09 (nineteen years ago)

i've got this too, but its kind of rare.

this tiny bar in Boston called the Tam has fucked me up more than once. 1 martini and the world becomes completely surreal and i can barely make it home safely...and feel like shit the next day.

AaronK (AaronK), Wednesday, 22 February 2006 13:49 (nineteen years ago)

the weird thing for me is that i feel fine in the evening but i wake up really tired despite having had my usual 8h sleep. I'm starting to think I may be developping some weird intolerance. I don't think feeling wrecked after one beer and a full night sleep is really normal.

Le Baaderonixx de Clignancourt (baaderonixx), Wednesday, 22 February 2006 14:45 (nineteen years ago)

Enumerate intake of nourishment in hrs. surrounding martini, pls

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Wednesday, 22 February 2006 14:56 (nineteen years ago)

Dude, stop taking drugs with that one beer. ;-)

Nathalie (stevie nixed), Wednesday, 22 February 2006 15:12 (nineteen years ago)

xpost i would say i ate a good lunch that day and a snack maybe an hour or two before. it's not usually a problem, which is why it was striking.

AaronK (AaronK), Wednesday, 22 February 2006 15:33 (nineteen years ago)

red wine to thread, pls.

don weiner (don weiner), Wednesday, 22 February 2006 15:49 (nineteen years ago)

i wd say that lunch plus snack is not enough bedding for the martini wallop.

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Wednesday, 22 February 2006 16:05 (nineteen years ago)

my guess is it's not just the drinks (or the one pint) but something deeper. something to do with what you do the next day, your job, etc. some unsatisfaction. even depression maybe ! (having been very tired/unwell/sick lately while drinking a lot less than before and sleeping a lot more, i have come to this kind of explanations...).
