Aaron Boone goes to the Yankkkees; Jeff Cirillo continues to gnaw at his bag of dicks in a drool-caked stupor.

Best tagline I've seen today. Makes me want to read the rest of the column

Nichole Graham (Nichole Graham), Thursday, 31 July 2003 18:46 (twenty-two years ago)

Column: Get on your horse, Gillick.

I didn't want to see Freddy go, whatever his problems, but fuck do the M's need another bat. And brotherly love.

chester (synkro), Thursday, 31 July 2003 19:11 (twenty-two years ago)

gygax! (gygax!), Thursday, 31 July 2003 19:12 (twenty-two years ago)

Ventura to the Dodgers for some no-names.

Mr. Diamond (diamond), Thursday, 31 July 2003 19:15 (twenty-two years ago)

Busy! Hadn't heard the Floppert deal.
Ponson isn't confirmed either. I'm going to miss Kurt.

Leee (Leee), Thursday, 31 July 2003 19:15 (twenty-two years ago)

And since there have been no confirming reports stating the contrary, Reuter might be in the mix explaining why he didn't start today. (No word at all why he didn't start.)

Leee (Leee), Thursday, 31 July 2003 19:18 (twenty-two years ago)

he was scratched at the last minute (still sore, but giants left him off the DL to psych out the cubbies). brower pitches around the order in the in the first, boy were they spooked.

gygax! (gygax!), Thursday, 31 July 2003 19:20 (twenty-two years ago)

and believe me, if you're trading a pitcher, you might as well pitch the eff out of him on his way out the door.

gygax! (gygax!), Thursday, 31 July 2003 19:20 (twenty-two years ago)

Bosox get Suppan. Goddamnit Jocketty, do something!

will someone please take escobar off the j's

dyson (dyson), Friday, 1 August 2003 00:58 (twenty-two years ago)

the Giants have traded 5 young pitchers, mostly from their once-mighty farm system:

Rookies/Minor Leaguers:
Clay Hensley (traded to SD)
RD Spiehs (traded to SD)
Brian Powell (traded to PHI)
Kurt Ainsworth (traded to BAL)

2nd Year:
Damian Moss (traded to BAL)

all 5 for Matt Herges, a player to be named later, and Sydney Ponson.

5 prospects (most of whom come from a reknown farm system) for a decent pitcher in the midst of a career year, a mediocre journeyman reliever, and a player to be named later.

Bear in mind that acquiring Moss came at the price of giving up Russ Ortiz (2003 to date: 15-4, 3.58 ERA, 1.30 WHIP, 92Ks.)

gygax! (gygax!), Friday, 1 August 2003 17:08 (twenty-two years ago)

it should be pointed out that Ponson will most likely be gone after the end of the season.

gygax! (gygax!), Friday, 1 August 2003 17:16 (twenty-two years ago)

and is overrated anyway.

nnnh oh oh nnnh nnnh oh (James Blount), Friday, 1 August 2003 18:32 (twenty-two years ago)

The parallelism with the Yankees never ends! We BOTH finally broke down and traded our top prospect.

I worry about Suppan.

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Friday, 1 August 2003 18:45 (twenty-two years ago)

The thing about Ponson is that he's not a good long-term prospect but we need pitchers NOW. But the Giants need pitchers now and he's having -- in the inimitable words of the Red Eye here in Chicago -- a "career season." I think this is like one of those Kenny Lofton maneuvers from last year. Felipe "I am surprisingly dope at managing baseball teams" Alou is just girding up for the playoffs.

Ess, Friday, 1 August 2003 19:07 (twenty-two years ago)

Ess is otm. Ainsworth is hurt now. Moss is obv too inconsistent (whether he pans out in the future was not in Sabean's mind for the trade). He has said so much that the trade was specifically for this year's WS.

And commish, I think ppl still overemphasize prospects. Giving up John Bananaman or whatever (I think you left him out) is acceptable b/c prospects are always crapshoots. Brien Taylor, TVanPop, Steve Karsay, SALOMON TORRES (*sob*), etc. Of the kids Sabean has given up since he's been our GM, can you name more than one who ended up being impact? (Foulke is the only response.) Using the farm as a bait for established big leaguers is kosher in my book.

Leee (Leee), Friday, 1 August 2003 19:29 (twenty-two years ago)

Did you know...

Kurt Ainsworth had Tommy John surgery as an 18 year old freshman at LSU?

It's one point that he's pitched most of his adult career AFTER the surgery, but yet you have to wonder now with his bizarre fractured scapula how long he's gonna be around.

gygax! (gygax!), Tuesday, 5 August 2003 19:25 (twenty-two years ago)

</possible mind flip>

gygax! (gygax!), Tuesday, 5 August 2003 19:27 (twenty-two years ago)

Don't you get TJ's stuff after his eponymous surgery?

Also, Giants picking up Sir Sidney to keep Atlanta (and to lesser extent, Cards) from picking him up -- c/d?

Leee (Leee), Tuesday, 5 August 2003 19:35 (twenty-two years ago)

Spiting the Braves = Eternally classic, even if not wise (not that this strikes me as a particularly dubious trade)
