TS: cornish pasties vs jamaican patties

i used to love a good cornish pasty until i discovered the joy of jamaican patties some years ago. now the indigenous british version ahs been usurped in my affections by the spicy, far tastier carribean variant (beef ones from peppers and spice on kingsland road in east london = my all-time fave, i can never eat less than two in one sitting). state your case...

I find the smooth yellow look of Jamaican patties kind of off-putting. Maybe they look good in the sun.

N. (nickdastoor), Thursday, 31 July 2003 23:24 (twenty-two years ago)

I haven't tried Jamaican patties so I can't really judge. I did used to make Cornish pasties for a living though, so they have the edge for me at the mo.
(according to the Independent they were the best pasties in cornwall, but they followed that article up next week with another one saying they couldn't be sure and it was probably too early to tell)

the Pasty booth in Marylebone station offers post-pub culinary nirvana. i had a chicken and vegetable one on the way home tonight and it rocked my world. now i want another one. they have about 6 other types (Steak and Stilton, Cheese and Bacon, Tikka Masala etc.) - best ones i've had.

Pengenna Pasties, High Street, Tintagel, yo.

Golden Krust Jamaican patties! (They sell 'em at Grand Central.) YUM! and they're cheap!!

Tad (llamasfur), Friday, 1 August 2003 00:48 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah, if anything's better than the Golden Crust chicken patties I want to know about it pronto.

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Friday, 1 August 2003 01:41 (twenty-two years ago)

sorry, "Krust"

when I was in NYC this past weekend for my going-away FAP I nipped into the Jamaican patty place around the corner from my now-former apt. y-u-m. haven't had Cornish pasties yet, though.

M Matos (M Matos), Friday, 1 August 2003 02:18 (twenty-two years ago)

matos - i'll post you one!!!

Dave Stelfox (Dave Stelfox), Friday, 1 August 2003 08:27 (twenty-two years ago)

mmm, Jamaican salt cod patties = num

and whatever the hell those things were on Seven Sisters road near the swimmer - they rocked

chris (chris), Friday, 1 August 2003 08:43 (twenty-two years ago)

Those were in a universe removed from the pattie / pasty though Chris.

Tim (Tim), Friday, 1 August 2003 09:04 (twenty-two years ago)

what were they and where? i am intrigued now...

Dave Stelfox (Dave Stelfox), Friday, 1 August 2003 10:12 (twenty-two years ago)

I thought the best pasties in Cornwall were repeatedly found in surveys to be those made at Hatt, between Plymouth and Callington. I've never had a Jamaican patty, but I had a monstrously gorgeous pasty a couple of years ago from the bakers opposite Truro cathedral.

thoth (Jake Proudlock), Friday, 1 August 2003 10:14 (twenty-two years ago)

The last great pastie I had was a cod and tarragon one from a bakery in Fowey.

Dave, the things were undescribable, but beautiful.

chris (chris), Friday, 1 August 2003 10:17 (twenty-two years ago)

All this talk of Cornwall is making me uncomfortable.

Stelfox: they were alien space savouries and I was refreshed enough not to remember anything but amazement.

Tim (Tim), Friday, 1 August 2003 10:26 (twenty-two years ago)

Sorry Tim.

Matt (Matt), Friday, 1 August 2003 13:51 (twenty-two years ago)

I've learned to only eat one patty at a time, otherwise its best to spill out for a roti.

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Friday, 1 August 2003 13:59 (twenty-two years ago)

If you want to get ahead, go to Hatt!!

(also the best fillings of cornish pasties can be purchased at the) museum of curiosities)

bell_labs, Saturday, 25 August 2007 16:54 (eighteen years ago)

someday i will have the courage try saltfish and ackee but until then...delicious patties

bell_labs, Saturday, 25 August 2007 16:56 (eighteen years ago)

i like the chicken patties and the beef patties; not so much the veggie. they never has teh fish ones, but i bet i would like those also.

DO U GET TEH COCO BREAD

ian, Saturday, 25 August 2007 19:50 (eighteen years ago)

ja. meat pies are amazing, even the frozen ones we used to get in h.s.

deej, Saturday, 25 August 2007 20:01 (eighteen years ago)

no coco bread! it confuses me. it is already covered in breadiness!

bell_labs, Saturday, 25 August 2007 20:02 (eighteen years ago)

more pastries should be filled with meat. the veggie ones at 3D are better than most but still need hotsauce to be edible.

bell_labs, Saturday, 25 August 2007 20:03 (eighteen years ago)

Very happy with the new Golden Krust in my neighborhood. I'm addicted to their soy(a) patties.

Capitaine Jay Vee, Saturday, 25 August 2007 23:51 (eighteen years ago)

And what's the name of that pastie franchise found in most London rail stations? Those are awesome.

Capitaine Jay Vee, Saturday, 25 August 2007 23:52 (eighteen years ago)

i think it may be time for me to move beyond the patty, and become a seeker of rotis.

also doubles.

bell_labs, Sunday, 26 August 2007 00:18 (eighteen years ago)

the trinidadian shops seem to be all over on nostrand...but there are SO many of them. my street is all jamaican all the time which is great but i want double here too!

bell_labs, Sunday, 26 August 2007 00:30 (eighteen years ago)

lol, at my local spot white people never get the coco bread holder. including me.

sanskrit, Sunday, 26 August 2007 01:12 (eighteen years ago)
