This has made my day and I just wanted to share it

While sitting at your desk make clockwise circles with your right foot. While doing this, draw the number "6" in the air with your right hand. What direction is your foot going now?

NB - You are right to think that if this made my day, my day is slow indeed. This is a combination of boredom + failure to organise Friday night and thus no-one to play-out with + procrastination for work stuff which I really must get done.

Dave B (daveb), Friday, 1 August 2003 10:58 (twenty-two years ago)

if you draw the number 666, you can in fact dispense with the use of feet entirely, though yr new talent comes at an infernal price

mark s (mark s), Friday, 1 August 2003 11:00 (twenty-two years ago)

whoa.

Chris V. (Chris V), Friday, 1 August 2003 11:01 (twenty-two years ago)

Chris V. (Chris V), Friday, 1 August 2003 11:02 (twenty-two years ago)

i'm amused, i'll admit it.

but then again, i'm now listening to 'is this the way to amarillo?' as part of my roadtrip sountrack. so maybe it's hurting my brain.

colette (a2lette), Friday, 1 August 2003 11:08 (twenty-two years ago)

That's cheered me up a bit too! Stupid foot.

Andrew Thames (Andrew Thames), Friday, 1 August 2003 11:10 (twenty-two years ago)

What's that about then? Come on, sort it out foot - dammit brain, concentrate - fire all synapses to right foot now, right arm, continue rotation, steady foot, steady... steady, SHIT.

Alex K (Alex K), Friday, 1 August 2003 11:13 (twenty-two years ago)

i so wanted to say clockwise still, but, ah...

gaz (gaz), Friday, 1 August 2003 11:17 (twenty-two years ago)

haha, i did it & I kinda liked it!

Pinkpanther (Pinkpanther), Friday, 1 August 2003 11:19 (twenty-two years ago)

i did it 4 times and still the foot knows best

gaz (gaz), Friday, 1 August 2003 11:21 (twenty-two years ago)

I managed to stop my foot from going counter-clockwise once and was all "Get in me, I rock!" and then realized I'd "managed" it by drawing the six backwards.

Tep (ktepi), Friday, 1 August 2003 11:41 (twenty-two years ago)

So yes, it made my day, too.

Tep (ktepi), Friday, 1 August 2003 11:41 (twenty-two years ago)

So, what, is my foot supposed to go counterclockwise while I'm drawing sixes? It's not!

(Although I should point out I've thoroughly trained my body/mind in terms of independence of appendage movement, probably from playing drums or playing like 3 keyboards at once and stuff. I think that's where I wasted all that brain-space that's not going toward important things like remembering and comprehending.)

nickalicious (nickalicious), Friday, 1 August 2003 11:43 (twenty-two years ago)

Independence of appendage movement - the future for evolution

Dave B (daveb), Friday, 1 August 2003 11:45 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm imagining the punk in Dirty Harry after Clint's immortal line - "Go on punk, make my day" : rather than going for his gun he says
"Okay, try this. Move your right foot in a clockwise motion then draw a six inthe air. Look at what direction your foot is going in now.

In the momentary bafflement to this strange psychological effect, the punk blows Dirty Harry away - saving us from four terrible sequels. Yay!

Pete (Pete), Friday, 1 August 2003 11:45 (twenty-two years ago)

Sorcery!!

Dale the Titled (cprek), Friday, 1 August 2003 11:50 (twenty-two years ago)

Drummers eh, think they're so clever

Andrew Thames (Andrew Thames), Friday, 1 August 2003 11:52 (twenty-two years ago)

But they still don't get laid as much. All that appendage co-ordination gone to waste har har

Dave B (daveb), Friday, 1 August 2003 11:58 (twenty-two years ago)

oh yes we're all doing it in the office now

Fuzzy (Fuzzy), Friday, 1 August 2003 12:09 (twenty-two years ago)

Trying to move both hands in circles going in the opposite direction is equally impossible.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Friday, 1 August 2003 12:22 (twenty-two years ago)

really? not for me. This is going to be like that day at school where someone learned the stand in a doorway and push at the doorframe with the backs of your hands trick.

teeny (teeny), Friday, 1 August 2003 12:42 (twenty-two years ago)

What does that do? I fear today is such a day where it might turn out to be the most amazingist thing evah.

Dave B (daveb), Friday, 1 August 2003 12:46 (twenty-two years ago)

Yr arms lift up involuntarily, don't they?

Andrew Thames (Andrew Thames), Friday, 1 August 2003 12:47 (twenty-two years ago)

just like I said, stand in a doorway, and try to raise your arms to the side. press the backs of your hands against the sides of the doorway hard for a minute, then step out of the doorway. Your hands will magically raise of their own volition.

teeny (teeny), Friday, 1 August 2003 12:48 (twenty-two years ago)

if you intone the words [deleted by ilx necromantic patrol squad] the entire building lifts up involuntarily

mark s (mark s), Friday, 1 August 2003 12:49 (twenty-two years ago)

Trying to move both hands in circles going in the opposite direction is equally impossible.

err, what? elaborate!

toby (tsg20), Friday, 1 August 2003 12:49 (twenty-two years ago)

Put your arms in front of your chest, elbows facing outward, index fingers pointing left/right. Now draw circles clockwise in the air with one index finger. Then, draw circles counterclockwise around that with your other hand. Enjoy!

Also, once you've tried the arms-in-doorway thing, try it the opposite way; raise your arms straight up and put your palms against the doorframe near the top, press against doorframe for 1 minute, then step out. OH MY GOD IT'S IMPOSSIBLE TO RAISE YOUR ARMS!

nickalicious (nickalicious), Friday, 1 August 2003 13:06 (twenty-two years ago)

(it's so hard to explain that circles-in-the-air thing when not in person)

nickalicious (nickalicious), Friday, 1 August 2003 13:06 (twenty-two years ago)

I can do the circles in the air one, no problem.

It's just my foot which won't obey me.

C J (C J), Friday, 1 August 2003 13:13 (twenty-two years ago)

God that's difficult.

Matt (Matt), Friday, 1 August 2003 13:50 (twenty-two years ago)

nickalicious i solved yr puzzle (you just give them the same radial speed: ie keep say yr left hand finger OUTSIDE yr right hand finger the whole time)

(to solve it even quicker, just put them tip to tip and inscribe a circle starting at yr chest, then moving away and back in a vertical plane: yr two fingertips are of course travelling clockwise and couterclockwise, in order to keep up with one another)

mark s (mark s), Friday, 1 August 2003 13:55 (twenty-two years ago)

killjoy

Andrew Thames (Andrew Thames), Friday, 1 August 2003 14:15 (twenty-two years ago)

Actually, I think what I was suggesting was like that, but I guess both circle should be clockwise, and one of them should have a greater diameter, so that the smaller circle is within the larger, and your hands are moving in opposite directions from each other; like drawing one small circle within another larger circle, and both of your hands are moving in opposite directions (which I never realized before means both hands are moving clockwise!).

nickalicious (nickalicious), Friday, 1 August 2003 14:19 (twenty-two years ago)

The involuntary arm-movement thing is the freakiest thing ever.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Friday, 1 August 2003 14:22 (twenty-two years ago)

holy fuck, that's tough, now that I understand what you're saying, nicalicious....

JuliaA (j_bdules), Friday, 1 August 2003 14:23 (twenty-two years ago)

(nickalicious was obv intended to have a k)

JuliaA (j_bdules), Friday, 1 August 2003 14:24 (twenty-two years ago)

mark s is right re: the circle in air trick. As long as you keep in mind that the fingers will be intersecting the same plane at the top and bottom of their arc it's not all that difficult. The foot-6 trick is boggling me though I believe I could get the hang of it. So far I can keep the foot moving clockwise no problem but now my sixes are a little wiggly.

Millar (Millar), Friday, 1 August 2003 15:01 (twenty-two years ago)

I can just about do the foot-6 thing now, as long as I do it really really slowly.

C J (C J), Friday, 1 August 2003 15:04 (twenty-two years ago)

I tried the foot thing with the same results as everyone else, 'til I realised, hey I'm left handed. I wouldn't even draw a 6 on paper with my right hand, so maybe I can get it using my left foot and left hand. Haha, I'm so damn smart, I think to myself. And dammit, my foot STILL follows my hand. Ack!

Jasmine U. (Jasmine U.), Friday, 1 August 2003 15:07 (twenty-two years ago)

It's going clockwise, but I just figured out that it's because I write my sixes all weird

Curt1s St3ph3ns, Friday, 1 August 2003 21:54 (twenty-two years ago)

I tried to force myself to stop changing direction and I pulled a calf muscle.

N. (nickdastoor), Friday, 1 August 2003 22:16 (twenty-two years ago)

Putcha right hand inna air!
Make a 6 like ya jus' don't care!

nickn (nickn), Saturday, 2 August 2003 00:51 (twenty-two years ago)

I do love the fact that many of us spent large portions of our day attempting to do this. I am awfully fond of this board at times.

Matt (Matt), Saturday, 2 August 2003 01:03 (twenty-two years ago)

my foot was still going clockwise.
