movies that have given you nightmares

The Exorcist is the worst of them, because it gives me waking nightmares. That movie profoundly disturbs me. Ironically, I don't think it would if I'd been brought up Catholic.

Starship Troopers gave me awful giant bug nightmares. I had an Apocalypse Now nightmare once. The beginning of Saving Private Ryan led to a particularly disturbing nightmare about being cut to pieces with a machine gun.

And what do I do to deal with this? I see the movie again!

Never has happened.
But, for a week or so after watching The Twilight Zone I thought the creature on the airplane was right outside my bedroom window. I made my Mom move my bed further away from the window thinking he couldn't get me over there. Well, I guess it worked.

The Serpent and the Rainbow - being buried alive is a recurring nightmare theme for me. The torture scene in 'A Dry White Season' is horrendous.

Not a movie, but Wuzel Gummidge used to give me terrible nightmares.

Critters did me something terrible when I was in the fourth grade (I think).

Misery didn't give me nightmares, but I couldn't sleep the first time I saw it.

I saw the girl from The Ring (circa crawling out of the TV) in a dream a couple of nights after I saw that. It woke me up, but I don't remember being scared.

I had nightmares after 28 Days Later that were even in that same dreary low-color, old-film-y visual spectrum, that involved running from "infected" through a house with the guy I saw the movie with, us clutching onto fireplace implements for dear life, them always right behind us.

The last time before this that I had a nightmare after watching a movie was probably from Gremlins when I was like 8 years old.

We always watched the old Saturday afternoon monster movies at my grandparents' house. I remember one time they showed one of those "creeping hand" movies (you know, where the disembodied hand crept around on its own doing mayhem) and for some reason that struck a chord with me, and I had nightmares about creeping severed hands for AGES. I'd wake up at night thinking there was one in the room. Gah, now that I'm reminded... (searches cubicle for any hidden creeping hands)

My parents let me watch Hitchcock's The Birds when I was young, against their better judgement, and that gave me nightmares. That coupled with me turning over a dead bird I found once only to discover it writhing with maggots has squicked me for birds to this day.

About ten years ago, the bathtub / acid scene in Nikita gave me nightmares. As did the evil tree in Poltergeist when I was twelve or so. That's about it. I get nightmares from books rather than movies.
