I used to take a shortcut to school every morning via St Mary’s Churchyard in the centre of Cheltenham, and was always amused by this gravestone :

To the memory of John Higgs, died 1825.

Here lies John Higgs,
A famous man for killing pigs,
For killing pigs was his delight
Both morning, afternoon and night
Both heats and cold he did endure,
Which no physician could e’er cure;
His knife is laid, his work is done,
I hope to heaven his soul is gone

The picture isn’t very clear – the tombstone is really crumbling away now.

Yeah, but who is Harv anyway? Just some guy?

Ned Raggett (Ned), Sunday, 3 August 2003 14:02 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah, but who is Harv anyway? Just some guy?

Not just "some guy", Ned, but a guy WHO WAS THERE!!

Although, you know, I am looking askance at the Rick Springfield and Loverboy mentions. *shakes head*

The saddest tombstone I ever saw was in a cemetery in Kansas City, MO, old and forgotten, lots of graves from 1800-1950. The tombstone had an oval inset with a picture of woman dressed a la 1919 (a picture of her in younger days most likely) and the death date was during the Great Depression, around 1930-something.
it had only one word on the tombstone besides the date:

MOMMA

The saddest one I have seen is a tiny headstone marking the grave of a week old baby, in the cemetery in Cheltenham. It just has that one line from Yeats on it :

"Tread softly, for you tread on my dreams"

It makes me want to cry every time I see it.

Cheltenham cemetery, incidentally, is where Brian Jones is buried (he has a very unassuming headstone, and his grave always looks rather neglected which is a shame)

I can't remember a particular one but I think NUnhead cemetery has some dramatic ones.

I was going to post the one Dada put up. It's in Notre-Dame-des-Neiges cemetary on Mount Royal.

Wilde's grave. It's surprisingly beautiful and gripping when you see it directly.

There's been some speculation that that one's fake, BTW.
