Me and the gf are thinking of a trip in early July. Dunno exactly where, prob gonna keep it within 6-800 mile radius what w/gas prices & all. From Austin that gets us (at the 800+ extremity) to one of the following: Albuquerque, Colorado Springs, Omaha (?!), St. Louis, Memphis, and pretty much anywhere in Oklahoma/Kansas/Arkansas.
Nominations! Reasons to go places! Arguments for and against! What you say!

yeah get to the mountains: temperate, pretty
― jergïns, Thursday, 1 May 2008 00:41 (seventeen years ago)
given the weather, you want to head for the mountains, xp
if you can get as far as Durango, Telluride, etc., the San Juans are recommended. plus, Mesa Verde.

memphis would be great. colorado springs is supposed to be pretty depressing, unless you are way, way into ugly suburbs in an otherwise beautiful state, and additionally are a fervent evangelical christian
so, um, yeah, fuck the rest and go to memphis...or else somewhere cool in colorado or nm, as suggested by others above

― Granny Dainger, Thursday, 1 May 2008 01:08 (seventeen years ago)

― gabbneb, Thursday, 1 May 2008 01:08 (seventeen years ago)

GF was like "I wanna go somewhere where it's not hot" and I was like "lol where u flyin"
Cloudcroft is totally nice in the summer though! That's a maybe.
deej Chicago was actually the orig plan and maybe would be again, we just gotta figure out some $$$ issues first. I would accept a beer or two w/gratitude!
― BIG HOOS aka the steendriver, Thursday, 1 May 2008 01:30 (seventeen years ago)
Amtrak Tickets from the Dallas/Austin corridor to Chicago are way cheaper than gas (much less lodging+food), FWIW.
― milo z, Thursday, 1 May 2008 01:40 (seventeen years ago)
$234 round trip per person - maybe not cheaper than gas for most people, actually, but still cheap
― milo z, Thursday, 1 May 2008 01:43 (seventeen years ago)
HOOS i'm looking at being in Chicago around then. I would have beers with all this ringtones.
also i know i'm an asshole for saying ppl shouldn't worry about the weather but when you're 21 and on a fuck-it road trip w/ your boo there are so many better things to base your plans on.
― gr8080, Thursday, 1 May 2008 01:48 (seventeen years ago)
Nowhere Hoos could go has shittier weather than Austin in the summer. (Except for Houston.)

That actually sounds really promising, only I just did the math w/my gas mileage & it seems like if gas prices stay in this region we'd save about $80 by driving?
Good suggest tho! I'll pass it along.
― BIG HOOS aka the steendriver, Thursday, 1 May 2008 02:02 (seventeen years ago)
Tho from my explorations on the Amtrak site it looks to be $234/train rather than round trip?
― BIG HOOS aka the steendriver, Thursday, 1 May 2008 02:09 (seventeen years ago)
yeah, I don't know why you wouldn't fly somewhere, tho prices will be up this summer
my guess is it might be as affected now by global warming/what-have-you as the Sky Islands in AZ, and La Nina this Summer is gonna heat the shit out of the Southwest - http://www.cpc.noaa.gov/products/analysis_monitoring/lanina/enso_evolution-status-fcsts-web.pdf (see p. 29)
― gabbneb, Thursday, 1 May 2008 02:10 (seventeen years ago)
Damn that's the trub man is a round trip up to Chicago is talkin round $500 just for gas, dunno if I can afford that. :( xp
― BIG HOOS aka the steendriver, Thursday, 1 May 2008 02:12 (seventeen years ago)
And I hate to be that dude with the calculator all "well given an average miles/tank ratio and assuming a rise in gas prices" etc, just tryin to keep shit in mind is all.
― BIG HOOS aka the steendriver, Thursday, 1 May 2008 02:14 (seventeen years ago)
