I'm moving to New York in a few weeks to go to school. I need people to tell me what to do that's fun besides record shopping and moping in my dorm room until I make some friends.

Ian Johnson (elmo oxygen), Sunday, 3 August 2003 20:53 (twenty-two years ago)

That's it. That's all the fun there is, especially in NYC. ;-)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Sunday, 3 August 2003 20:56 (twenty-two years ago)

Tons and tons of bars to visit.

Texas Sam (thatgirl), Sunday, 3 August 2003 20:56 (twenty-two years ago)

Tons and tons of shows to see.

Millar (Millar), Monday, 4 August 2003 00:43 (twenty-two years ago)

Tons and tons of people to fuck.

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Monday, 4 August 2003 00:45 (twenty-two years ago)

Tons and tons of record and clothing stores to visit (hold onto your wallet!)

j.lu (j.lu), Monday, 4 August 2003 00:47 (twenty-two years ago)

Yay NYC!

Texas Sam (thatgirl), Monday, 4 August 2003 00:47 (twenty-two years ago)

The perfect thread?

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Monday, 4 August 2003 01:32 (twenty-two years ago)

It would make a great commercial

gabbneb (gabbneb), Monday, 4 August 2003 01:35 (twenty-two years ago)

Is there anywhere to find listings of shows in NYC? Preferrably focussing on indie/hardcore/noise, etc. Similarly, give me specifics about places to go: bars, rekkid stores, etc.

Ian Johnson (elmo oxygen), Monday, 4 August 2003 01:39 (twenty-two years ago)

Ian, what school are you going to? I start at New School University, the Lang division, in a few weeks. Excited about moving there, because at my last school (Hofstra) all I did was go to the city on nights and weekends anyway.

justin s., Monday, 4 August 2003 03:38 (twenty-two years ago)

wish I'd gotten to fuck some people in NYC, but that's life

M Matos (M Matos), Monday, 4 August 2003 03:56 (twenty-two years ago)

villagevoice.com has plenty of show listings. I wouldn't worry about finding record stores here, its more like they find you and proceed to take all your $$$. Also there's a lot fo nyc kids on the oft mentioned friendster.com. You probably could find people to go to shows with there.

bnw (bnw), Monday, 4 August 2003 04:06 (twenty-two years ago)

Hey Justin, I also am going to Lang. I move in on the 21st; What dorm are you in? I'll be in Loeb Hall in an apartment with some other folks I've never really met before.

Ian Johnson (elmo oxygen), Monday, 4 August 2003 04:08 (twenty-two years ago)

the arbitrary guide to popular culture, on wfmu.org, is pretty extensive too.

Chris Barrus (Chris Barrus), Monday, 4 August 2003 09:41 (twenty-two years ago)

wow, lucky you! I can't help you with advice, but good luck anyway!

Pinkpanther (Pinkpanther), Monday, 4 August 2003 09:47 (twenty-two years ago)

My sister goes to Lang. But she will be a senior so fuck off.

NA (Nick A.), Monday, 4 August 2003 11:18 (twenty-two years ago)

I swear with Billy Joel as my witness that I am an innocent man. Anyway...

Ian, are you a freshman? I'm coming in as a transfer student, so I start on the 23rd. I'll be living in the William Street dorm, which is way down in the Financial District, too far from the actual class building on 11th Street to my liking. But I'm still excited about going to Lang. From all accounts, it's an awesome school.

justin s., Tuesday, 5 August 2003 03:01 (twenty-two years ago)

Just to prove that meeting people is easy (tm), here's my AIM name, in case you'd like to chat: torquemada28. I've already started talking to a few people from Lang over AIM, and it's very comforting to know that I'll know at least a few people before I start out there.

justin s., Tuesday, 5 August 2003 03:03 (twenty-two years ago)

Welcome young intellectuals;)

Mary (Mary), Tuesday, 5 August 2003 03:04 (twenty-two years ago)

I'll be living in the William Street dorm

ha! I work two blocks away. (I am there right now. boo.) There is little around. But there is some stuff - within three blocks is a pretty decent 24-hr supermarket/deli with pretensions, a not-bad (and very large) bar, a decent Thai restaurant (not the one downstairs), and an NYU dorm. Also, the Seaport is close.

gabbneb (gabbneb), Tuesday, 5 August 2003 03:19 (twenty-two years ago)

Hmmm... doesn't sound too bad. I'd rather be in Union Square, but i'll manage. How's the bar? Is it very Financial District-y? (That's a crappy adjective, but to come up with a better one I'd have to stretch and possibly hurt myself.) And one more question, and I'll be very very appreciative. How is the subway service late at night? I hope it's more reliable than the goddamn West 4th station. That place deserves honorary Circle of Hell status.

justin s., Tuesday, 5 August 2003 03:26 (twenty-two years ago)

But record shopping and moping are quintessential NY activities! I like to think they can even be done with a bit of skill, a bit of derring-do.

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Tuesday, 5 August 2003 04:06 (twenty-two years ago)

Which bar, John's?

Mary (Mary), Friday, 8 August 2003 16:55 (twenty-two years ago)

the John Street Bar and Grill. I dunno how Fin Dist-y it is. It was supposed to be very sceney like a year/year and a half ago, but I think that's moved on. It could make it as an indie rec room, sorta.

subways can take a while late at night. how does any one station differ from another? most of the time it's fine, but a few times i've regretted not taking a car home. the fulton st. station is cheerier than some, and there are always people in it.

gabbneb (gabbneb), Friday, 8 August 2003 20:49 (twenty-two years ago)

three months pass...
hey fuckers.

your city is boring!!

Ian Johnson (orion), Friday, 14 November 2003 07:34 (twenty-one years ago)

hstencil, Friday, 14 November 2003 07:40 (twenty-one years ago)

clearly you were asking for that.

hstencil, Friday, 14 November 2003 07:41 (twenty-one years ago)

your neighborhood is boring

gabbneb (gabbneb), Friday, 14 November 2003 13:38 (twenty-one years ago)

NYC, NO TACO BELL. You need to rethink your location of education choice. I could never live where grilled stuffed burritos are only in commercials.

Spinktor the Unmerciful (mawill5), Friday, 14 November 2003 13:40 (twenty-one years ago)

thank you for your culinary wisdom. (there are at least 4-5 Taco Bells in Manhattan. and NYC has San Loco, from whom Taco Bell has stolen)

gabbneb (gabbneb), Friday, 14 November 2003 14:07 (twenty-one years ago)

I never saw one. My bad.

Spinktor the Unmerciful (mawill5), Friday, 14 November 2003 14:08 (twenty-one years ago)

New York City is for sellouts

NA (Nick A.), Friday, 14 November 2003 14:25 (twenty-one years ago)
