My favourite part character in The Simpsons vanished quite early in the series. Why?

In one of the compilation episodes they did they asked at the advert what 2 popular simpsons characters died.
Then troy mclure said "if you say bleeding gums murphy and dr marvin monroe then you are wrong they werent popular characters."
I remember bleeding gums murphy dying but I dont remember dr marvin monroe dying.

I seem to remember them discussing why on the DVD commentary. Can't quite remember, but it may have simply been that they found his voice too grating.

The writers hated him for unknown reasons and they killed him off.

His first episode is still one of the best from the Early Days.

"Boxing, Lisa, boxing. There's a world of difference!"

Monroe didn't die on air. In one episode they name the hospital Dr. Marvin Monroe Memorial Hospital, and you were supposed to assume he died at some point.

Goddam! He was a key satirical device, opening up a field of satire on our overly diagnostic tendencies.

seeing him makes me think of the one where Bart turns Homer into a Jack-in-the-box. this is a wonderful thing.

Dr. Marvin Monroe: You've got to tell him you're fed up,
and if he doesn't start loving you, you will be leaving.
Marge: Leave Homer!?
Dr. Marvin Monroe: Please! Don't use his real name!
Marge: Leave Pedro!?

They killed Marvin Monroe because the voice was too much of a strain for Harry Shearer.

Andrew (enneff), Monday, 4 August 2003 02:19 (twenty-two years ago)

And all the OTHER voices he does aren't a strain!?

He wasn't a patch on Dr Nick Riviera, though.

the guy Dr Marv was totally based on (the guy that used to have the advice call in show after SNL) died soon before.
