I recently learned that the 8-glasses-of-water-a-day thing is, according to some scientists, not backed by any solid evidence:

Got any others?

WHEAT GRASS JUICE

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Monday, 4 August 2003 01:55 (twenty-two years ago)

(evil fuckin stuff, doesn't do jack, if you feel the "rush" then you can be 100% sure you're not getting any nutrition, just a sugar hit from an immature harvest)

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Monday, 4 August 2003 01:56 (twenty-two years ago)

That there's propaganda by people who want you to die already.

Scaredy Cat, Monday, 4 August 2003 02:02 (twenty-two years ago)

so, it's not true that a hearty breakfast of buckshot will do a body good?

damn. Looks like i have to change tomorrow's menu.

Kingfish (Kingfish), Monday, 4 August 2003 02:03 (twenty-two years ago)

fat and sugar are always bad for you

oops (Oops), Monday, 4 August 2003 02:04 (twenty-two years ago)

SC if you're arguing with me about wheatgrass you're wrong wrong wrong.

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Monday, 4 August 2003 02:13 (twenty-two years ago)

Freaking protein powder drinks. Like- most americans already eat too much protein. If you want some soy protein in your diet, why not just stir-fry some tofu already instead of paying $40 for a massive canister of cocoa+soy powder+chemicals? I'm a bit two-faced about this, I drink a glass of chocolate soy milk most days when I get home- although I rarely eat meat, so maybe it's ok. ;-) It's really the price & all the additives in those powders that I think are totally nuts.

lyra (lyra), Monday, 4 August 2003 03:08 (twenty-two years ago)

I read about the water thing being a bit of a furfy as well. In that, we may need the fluid, but it comes from all kinds of sources without trying (food, tea, fizzy drinks, juice etc as well as water).

Also heard something recently that bottled water is worse for you than tap water because there's no flouride in it, so young kids are presenting with loads of tooth decay again nowdays. That one prickles my "hmmm..." meter a bit, though. I mean wtf is toothpaste for then?

Trayce (trayce), Monday, 4 August 2003 04:05 (twenty-two years ago)

SC if you're arguing with me about wheatgrass you're wrong wrong wrong.

I was actually jokingly replying to the water vs. soda/coffee, etc. hydration issue addressed above. I know nothing about wheatgrass, other than it tastes like something you might normally make with a lawnmower, rather than a kitchen appliance.

Sc, Monday, 4 August 2003 04:57 (twenty-two years ago)

ah fair enough. it took me ages of searching on the net to find anything even vaguely scientific about wheatgrass. i can't believe i ever put that shit in my mouth.

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Monday, 4 August 2003 04:58 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah, I just tried it once. I had it added to a regular juice I was getting all the time. I took one sip and actually felt vomit in the back of my throat. I couldn't even choke it down because my body's reaction was to puke. Basically, I turned the corner and threw it in the garbage.

Scaredy Cat, Monday, 4 August 2003 15:09 (twenty-two years ago)

Lyra, do regular Americans really drink hi-protein drinks? I thought that was just bodybuilders?

N. (nickdastoor), Monday, 4 August 2003 15:17 (twenty-two years ago)

A lot of smoothie places offer add-ons like protein, ginseng, bee pollen, etc.

Everyone knows the story about spinach, right? "The idea that spinach contained exceptional levels of iron originated in 1870 with Dr. E. von Wolf whose figures remained unchallenged until 1937, when it was discovered that the content was 1/10th the claim. The oversight resulted from a misplaced decimal point."

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Monday, 4 August 2003 15:27 (twenty-two years ago)

P-p-p-popeye is a lie?!!!

nickn (nickn), Monday, 4 August 2003 15:42 (twenty-two years ago)

What is exceptional levels? Iron is pretty easy to overdose on.

Scaredy Cat, Monday, 4 August 2003 15:50 (twenty-two years ago)

Spinach is packed with lies, I tell you, LIES!!

Dr. T. von Hand (tracerhand), Monday, 4 August 2003 16:13 (twenty-two years ago)

If you want iron, try sugar beet syrup. There's so much iron in it it tastes like blood.

Sommermute (Wintermute), Monday, 4 August 2003 17:10 (twenty-two years ago)

hot peppers put hair on your chest. not true.

RE: Soy
Soy is actually very bad for many women; it increases the production of estrogen. I had a serious GYN problem after drinking soy milk for a month that ended up w/ a D&C before things returned to normal.

Orbit (Orbit), Monday, 4 August 2003 17:13 (twenty-two years ago)

too much Colloidal silver makes you greyish blue. The reason you're supposed to take it is because it's on a radio commercial.

Aaron A., Monday, 4 August 2003 17:31 (twenty-two years ago)

Celery - anything that makes me feel that ill CANNOT be good for me.

You mean if I keep drinking soy I'm going to turn into a chick? But I love my soy!

colin s barrow (colin s barrow), Monday, 4 August 2003 21:25 (twenty-two years ago)

Red wine is good for you
No, red wine is bad for you
No, it's good
Bad
Good
Bad
Good
ad nauseam.

I've lost track of whether it's good or bad this week.

ailsa (ailsa), Monday, 4 August 2003 21:27 (twenty-two years ago)

(not that wine is food, but neither is water, so...)

ailsa (ailsa), Monday, 4 August 2003 21:27 (twenty-two years ago)

It may have already happened. Vigilance is key.
Red wine is good for you as long as you don't drink all of it all the time.

Orbit (Orbit), Monday, 4 August 2003 21:28 (twenty-two years ago)

Damn...

ailsa (ailsa), Monday, 4 August 2003 21:32 (twenty-two years ago)

I don't drink it when I'm asleep or during a job interview. So that's OK then. *phew*

colin s barrow (colin s barrow), Monday, 4 August 2003 21:36 (twenty-two years ago)

But I love my soy!

Soon you can spill it over your own titties and lick it off! Yay!

Sommermute (Wintermute), Monday, 4 August 2003 21:37 (twenty-two years ago)

E. von Wolf?

mark s (mark s), Monday, 4 August 2003 22:50 (twenty-two years ago)

the food guide pyramid with all the daily serving recommendations. how could anyone eat that much in a day, EVERY day, unless they're a serious athlete or something?

Maria (Maria), Monday, 4 August 2003 23:17 (twenty-two years ago)

supposedly the entire food pyramid is just wrong wrong wrong. The meat and dairy industries pressured the govt. to emphasize those two. Shocking, huh?

oops (Oops), Monday, 4 August 2003 23:19 (twenty-two years ago)

what of the sweeties industry? have they no power?

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Monday, 4 August 2003 23:22 (twenty-two years ago)

they haven't a sweeties industry in the USA.

RJG (RJG), Monday, 4 August 2003 23:24 (twenty-two years ago)

lollies then?

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Monday, 4 August 2003 23:24 (twenty-two years ago)

they were placated with Easter, Valentine's Day, and Halloween.

oops (Oops), Monday, 4 August 2003 23:25 (twenty-two years ago)

I stand by E. von Wolf's figures.

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Monday, 4 August 2003 23:58 (twenty-two years ago)

I think it is funny when people say "ew I'm not eating that, its so bad for you!" ... and then they have a drag on a cigarette or something.

I'm not being righteous - I did it myself the other day, saying aspartame was carcinogenic, to which my best friend replied "yeah Trace and all those smokes you smoke arent doing a thing bad to you, are they?" which shut me up.

Trayce (trayce), Tuesday, 5 August 2003 00:20 (twenty-two years ago)

See, the comeback you wanted was, "Exactly -- why should I make my odds any worse?"

Tep (ktepi), Tuesday, 5 August 2003 00:27 (twenty-two years ago)

Soy is actually very bad for many women; it increases the production of estrogen

However, it is supposed to be helpful for women during the menopause for exactly that reason.
