Falling Asleep Face-down On Your Keyboard: C/D

I've had a very bad weekend in which my plans for the next couple of years suddenly decided to crumble. I didn't sleep very well last night and I'm in danger of passing out on my keyboard.

Do you ever sleep at work? Do you have any tips for slumbering on the man's dollar? Where do you nap?

On the john of course.

I'd never though of that!

I've slept in the bathroom too. Also, in the cellar, if your office has one. But the most intriguing trick I came up with was when I had my own room in an office, with a door that opened inwards. I'd spray some paper clips on the floor, then go sleeping on the floor, with one foot against the door. This way, if someone would've come through the door she would've woken me up, and I could've said I was on the floor picking up the paper clips I had accidentally dropped. I never had the chance to see if this would actually work (probably not), since no one ever came into my room while I was sleeping there.

In a pinch I've just put my arm down on my desk and tucked my head into it kinda like how a bird sleeps.

never fall asleep on a tennis racquet as you'll end up with criss-cross marks on your face all morning.

yeah, but you'll do a very good impression of Kendo Nagasaki

If you sit so that your back is to the rest of the office (like me), put a piece of paper on your desk and prop your head up on your hand like you're reading the paper. It works best if you only take little 5-minute naps and then you move around a little bit, otherwise your lack of motion becomes suspicious.

When ill, I usually collapse into a big armchair in the office kitchen.

classic all the fuckin' way.

do you drive to work? napping in one's car is always good, unless it's the summer months and unbearably hot.

Kingfish (Kingfish), Monday, 4 August 2003 12:42 (twenty-two years ago)

sometimes a nap in the shitter and a nap in the car.

Unless you've got a parking structure that's nearby. I once worked a job where there was no lighting in the parking structure which made it ideal for crashing out for brief stretches.

Chin-resting-on-hand, elbow-resting-on-table, mind-resting-on-the-clock, easy peasy lemon squeezy.

There is a problem with many of these approaches if you snore loudly.

three years pass...
I almost passed out at my desk today. I had to go for a little walk around the building to wake myself up.

Tuomas' cunning paper clips plan upthread is excellent.

In a previous job we had a huge storeroom with a hidden "bed" in the back of it made out of foam packing material. I made use of that on more than a few hungover mornings.

Someone once told me the best thing to do if you realise you've been caught slumped over the keyboard is to slowly raise your head, cross yourself and say "Amen".

I can sleep sitting up (short 5-10 min naps). I usually do what Nick A does, and pretend I'm reading a piece of paper.

When I worked in a warehouse we had these massive rolls of bubble wrap that we used to sleep on. On hot days we would bring them outside and sleep in the sun. It was great.

That sounds cool. We''ve got a chill-out room where we're actively encouraged to go and have a snooze if we're feeling groggy. It's also got table football in there so nobody ends up sleeping through the hollering of a successful shot on goal.

A friend of mine is a techie at a school, going in with a tremendous hangover one morning he pulled the plug on the schools net access, phoned the ehad and told there were "network problems" locked his door and spent the day asleep under his desk.

For my part I've been known to pull chairs together and use a stack of teatowels as a pillow to catch forty winks between services.

When I punched the clock, there were a few catnaps sitting on the can. If I can just get five minutes with my eyes closed and no phone ringing, it's amazingly restorative.

Now, I can just turn the light off, put my feet up, start my Necks or Eno playlist and snooze away, but doing that pretty much guarantees that the phone will ring.

I have also fallen asleep face-down on the other kind of keyboard a few times. I get a nice droney patch going + barely 10 hours of sleep in almost a week = that drone will go on all night long. Thanks face.

No worries, Hannibal.

I got excellent naps in high school and certain jobs propping my face up w/my elbows, half hiding my face with my hair, in front of documents or open books. I looked DEEP IN CONCENTRATION but I was actually in the Land of Nod.

Abbott (Abbott), Monday, 15 January 2007 22:12 (eighteen years ago)

I wouldn't be surprised if at least 5% of my overall lifetime sleep minutes were attributable in some way to the deep concentration ruse.
