Can someone confirm if trait is pronounced "trait" or "tray"? Are both correct?

Both corrrect but I've never actually heard anyone use tray and not sure when you would.

My grade 8 social studies teacher insisted on pronouncing it "tray". I used to crawl around on the floor and pretend I was a monster in her class.

I hope she beat you Bryan.

No. She arranged a counsellor to talk to me and that helped very much. She was a very special person.

I just send kids like you to the counselor and he beats them. Keeps my hands clean.

The man did make me cry at school which was pretty bad, I guess. I think that was around the time that corporal punishment was finally outlawed. I probably did need a beating. The teacher actually found the monster routine kinda funny at first (she generally found me entertaining and we stayed friends after I left that school), but I think after three or four times she decided it was a cry for help and she got me some. We made fun of her for saying "tray", by the way. We were 14. What choice did we have? ;-)

I'm making fun of her now. Who the hell says "tray"?

She was also missing the last joint of one of her index fingers (she worked in a meat packing plant when she was a student and it was cut off), though I can't remember what we said to make fun of her for that. Probably just called her stub or something unimaginative like that.

It is both. A lecturer at university always used to talk about trays - confusing the stupid people. If you speak English you should say trait and have done with it. Tray is a posey French way of saying it and everyone just thinks you are a dickhead if you say tray for trait.
