Introduce Yourselves!

Actually, don't. The whole of ILE is "introduce yourselves". So why not instead say one thing about yourself that you've not so far mentioned anywhere else - a fact, a story, an opinion, whatever you like....

I was excommunicated by the mormon church for sleeping with a missonary, adnitting i was gay and then not going for therapy
this is a really tawdry story and i could post it if anyone really cared .

I haven't drunk any alcohol this year.

christopher, Thursday, 28 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I once spent a week with Anna Nicole Smith. She made me watch as she went on the mechanical kiddie ride in front of the supermarket. I am not proud of this. Just another sordid detail of my life.

michele, Thursday, 28 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I am related very very distantly to Darren Day.

I'm related to infamous highwaywoman Mary Bryant of Fowey. Ac onvicted felon, transported + escaped from Botany Bay. Recaptured, sent to London Newgate prison in chains. James Boswell defended her at her trial.

As a kid, I used to smear Aquafresh toothpaste all over my belly. It tingled (I guess).

David Raposa, Thursday, 28 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Stevo! I'm a huge Mary Bryant fan!

Have you read Thomas Keneally's Our Country's Good? Do you know about the play - it's about a group of convicts in OZ attempting to put on a theatrical production - play within a play. It's wonderful and she's in it.

A few generations back a rather reprehensible great uncle died in San Francisco under mysterious circumstances. His name = "Black Dick" Raggett. I offer no conclusions on what this might mean.

Prize for making a poster to discourage vandals from littering the streets of lovely Tring. My slogan was 'Stop LiTring' (d'you see?).

I skipped a grade in primary school. My aunt once dated fat bald much- imitated (by me and my school buddies) fast-talking comedian Roméo Pérusse - except he was a thin crooner with a full head of hair at the time.

Patrick, Thursday, 28 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I became a lot happier when I realised I actually disliked the majority of people I go to school with. Everyone should do this.

P.S. I suppose being about to leave might have helped a bit as well :)

Bill, Thursday, 28 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

My mom's cousin-in-law is Bob Costas, the world's MOST ANNOYING sports announcer.

Ally, Thursday, 28 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

What about Marv Albert? At least Bob Costas doesn't run around biting women and wearing wigs (that I know of anyway).

Um, personally I can't think of anything interesting to come up with for this thread...I'm really really boring.

Nicole, Thursday, 28 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Oh, come on. Bob Costas is a spoonful of sugar compared to walking crotchrots like Bill Walton & Tim McCarver & Bobby Mercer. Or John Sterling & Michael Kay. I hate the Yankees' broadcast team. And most sports announcers / journalists suck by default, anyway.

I'm surprised no one's quoted Ralph Wiggum yet.

David Raposa, Thursday, 28 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Nicole, that behavior makes Marv a CLASSIC. Bob Costas is boring.

The Bob Costas thing is the only thing I could think of that no one else knew about me. I'm trying to think of some more but I really can't.

Ally, Thursday, 28 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I bent my wookie.

michele, Thursday, 28 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

John Sterling and Michael Kay are two of the smoothest most professional commentators in all of sports - however much you may hate the Yankees (as I do) you cannot deny their chroniclers' artistry on the radio. Marv too - after Johnny Most died Marv became de facto the most assured radio basketball commentator on the planet. Hear how calm he is, even when speaking at an auctioneer's pace. CLASSIC.

I am a luvvie. Ssshh!

Tracer Hand, Thursday, 28 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I don't think most of the people on this forum know that my oldest brother died a little over 13 years ago.

Dan Perry, Thursday, 28 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I was paralysed from the waist down for three months when I was three.

Richard Tunnicliffe, Thursday, 28 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Smooth my ass. If I hear Michael Kay describe the Yankees uniforms like Derek Jeter and Tino Martinez were struting their stuff on the catwalk one more time, I'm going to rolf. Give me Jim Kaat, Ken Singleton, and Al Trautwig any day of the year. And I'm glad you didn't refute my complaints about McCarver & Murcer. Though Fran Healy gives all crappy commentators a run for their money.

David Raposa, Thursday, 28 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I was almost murdered by my own father.

Johnathan, Thursday, 28 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

8And of course they shouldn't discuss things like uniforms and lives because, as we all know, baseball is an exciting and fast paced sport with absolutely no standing around doing fuck all periods whatsoever, therefore there is always loads to talk about in terms of game action.

Ally, Thursday, 28 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I was knocked down three times by cars when I was a child. I also got scabies once.

Michael, Thursday, 28 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

My roommate got hit by a car last week. We were so drunk we just started laughing though, and then went and bought masquerade masks and giant butterfly wings.

Ally, Thursday, 28 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Gosh, Ally, is that some of that there "sarcasm"?

Baseball is a methodical, considered, placid sport, yes. And I'm all for idle chatter. But if I wanted fashion reports, I'd watch _Entertainment Tonight_, I'd read _W_, I'd go to an Ivy League school. The heck does someone listening on the RADIO need to know what the uniforms look like? I doubt people are tuning into WABC by chance during a Yankee broadcast, and thinking to themselves, "Hmm, this sounds interesting. But, yet, I wonder - what DO those American- as-a-mullet Yankee uniforms look like?"

David Raposa, Thursday, 28 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I have watched every single Yankee game this season with the sound turned off. I won't even put the radio broadcast on. If I hear that insipid "Yankees win, Yankeeees wiiiiiiiiiiiiin" one more time, I am going to go over to the Stadium and put my foot up their ass. As for Tim McCarver, I would like to sew his mouth shut with twine.

Little known fact about me: I once worked for the New York Yankees. I ate lunch every day in the seats behind home plate, acting as if the stadium were mine.

michele, Thursday, 28 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

But if I wanted fashion reports, I'd watch _Entertainment Tonight_, I'd read _W_, I'd go to an Ivy League school.

I was right there with you up until the last one. Based on my experience, kids at Ivy League schools are so stressed about their grades that fashion (and sometimes hygiene) tends to fall by the wayside. There are exceptions, but these exceptions are usually too busy dating people off-campus to really be talked about.

Now, if you'd said Boston University...

Dan Perry, Thursday, 28 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Don't post much, but...

The Christian Bale character in Velvet Goldmine --Arthur, that is--was loosely based on experiences I had as a teen punk runaway, according to its editor/co-writer, Jim Lyons. Then Todd Haynes Anglicized and glam-ified it.

Arthur, Thursday, 28 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Ah, shit! Boston U! THAT'S what I meant! Sorry, bro. I just assumed prestige + money = shit-hot couture. I mean, when Jenna's drinking off-campus, I hope she's wearing the finest Armani. Though, knowing her family, she's probably wearing Don Imus knock-offs.

Michele: For shame. The insipidness in question is, "Yankees win! Theahahahahahahahahahahahah Yankees win!" Oh, it's terrible. Scratch my back with a hacksaw. At least it's not Hawk Harrelson.

Since I've sort of derailed the thread - in sixth grade, during Easter vacation, I broke my left pinky. Playing basketball. Nerf Basketball. Instead of explaining myself, I'll just let your imaginations run free...

David Raposa, Thursday, 28 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Really, Arthur? I'm impressed (keep in mind I lurve _VG_ quite a lot). I was always thinking Todd H. had Morrissey in mind, actually.

Ned Raggett, Thursday, 28 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I graduated from Elementary School without ever using a school bathroom!

Tom Porrino, Thursday, 28 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Yeah, Ned, it's true. My friend Jim wrote a story about my experiences--a sort of fantasy version of the events--and Todd, who was also his boyfriend at the time, read it and decided to incorporate it into the movie. Although Morrissey makes more sense, doesn't it? God, a LOT more sense, what with the Dolls obsession and "London" and whatever that runaway song was--"Half a Person"? Maybe Jim neglected to tell me that part of the story, thinking I'd feel more *special* that way. Of course, after I saw it I kept thinking I really wanted to be Jack Fairy!

Arthur, Thursday, 28 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Most interesting indeed! Also the fact that Morrissey was his own semi-journalist for a while as well and things like that...I actually wouldn't have fully dreamed up that comparison if I hadn't seen in the published screenplay that in fact Arthur's hometown is specifically said to be Manchester. My friend Brian also noted that his older brother at the record store looks a lot like a Gallagher sibling...

And hey, who wouldn't want to be Jack Fairy?

Ned Raggett, Thursday, 28 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I once kissed Jesus. He stood there for a moment and asked " Why did you do that my son" ? I replied " Becasue you are very special" THen he said ' Not the kiss, why did you just run up to me nude screaming 'GIVE GARFILE D SOME FUCKING LASAGNA!!'" ? And I said without missing a beat " Becasue you have the POWER TO DO IT. " I like Jesus, and God too. THey are silly rascals!

Mike Hanle y, Thursday, 28 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

camp..7th grade..i made a kid cry by telling him i wanted to rape his corpse. kinda feel bad about it now.

kevin enas, Thursday, 28 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

McCarver and Murcer have *nothing* to say so they fill the long gaps in the action with what seems like willful inarticulateness, leading inevitably to dull-headed misunderstanding, which in turn necessitates further explication, and then finally some token disagreement - at which point something actually happens in the game and the (usually pointless) subject is hastily dropped.

I have actually heard Michael Kay criticize Sterl's signoff - "Thaaaaa YANKees win...!" - but I like it. It's like "New York New York" played at the end of every game - insipid yet essential. By the way I hate the Yankees. It's the Beaneaters for me, baby. (final embarrasing factoid: when watching yankees/red sox on TV, I mute then turn on Sterling and Kay on the AM dial. Like a fucking grandpa.)

And btw Ally your criticism of baseball bounces off me and sticks to you: I love baseball precisely because you don't really have to pay attention.

Tracer Hand, Thursday, 28 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Are you in the Boston area or the NYC area, Tracer? If I find out you're dissing Sean McDonough for those radio dopes, I'll make you watch tape of Matt Young's "no-hitter".

Hello—

Something that may not be completely obvious from reading my current ramblings about music: I was once in a DJ group that consisted of four "turntablists" in which we created scratch composition sort of music.

Look forward to reading more frequently. I've always been in and out as a lurker, but now that I'm actually registered, I plan to stick around.

I was disfellowshipped from the Branch Davidians because I had this pink alarm clock that went off at random times, causing the more neurotic hens in the yard to fall behind on their laying schedule and suffer from, in some cases, quite severe PTSD symptoms.

I've been sneaking around I Love Football and I Love Books recently in an attempt to break down the unwieldy behemoth that is ILX (or at least that it seems to be to this outsider) into manageable chunks. Been working my toes right up to the edge of the diving board though, so who knows? I just realised that I didn't actually post a fact or a story about myself that I hadn't revealed anywhere else yet. I'm a stickler for protocol.

When I was 8 years old (I think) I swallowed a one pound coin and then chickened out of a helicopter ride when they tried to airlift me to hospital. I still have the pound coin. It's blue.

Reading back, I suppose "I'm a stickler for protocol" could have counted as my little tidbit of information about myself, but that's a pretty lame thing to leave people with when you're trying to say hello.
