What's it good for? Who's got it? Do you respect it? Do you want it?

Nick Southall (Nick Southall), Tuesday, 5 August 2003 09:45 (twenty-two years ago)

I suspect I value this more than anything else when making judgements about other individuals. Blame it on my dad.

What's it good for?

It's not "good for" anything. It just makes you a better human being.

Millar (Millar), Tuesday, 5 August 2003 09:53 (twenty-two years ago)

It's a good word to put on your CV!

Pinkpanther (Pinkpanther), Tuesday, 5 August 2003 09:55 (twenty-two years ago)

Air Force "core values" that we had to yell at the top of our lungs every morning at about 5:15 during Basic Training:

"INTEGRITY FIRST"
"SERVICE BEFORE SELF"
"EXCELLENCE IN ALL WE DO"
!!!!!!

The military has taught me more about gross misuses of the term 'integrity' than I ever knew before

Kurt Angle!

jel -- (jel), Tuesday, 5 August 2003 11:48 (twenty-two years ago)

Integritty = stubborn stains

stevem (blueski), Tuesday, 5 August 2003 11:50 (twenty-two years ago)

I love using this word as an adjective to describe physical qualities of substances, as in "I've had this lotion too long and now it's completely lost its integrity."

teeny (teeny), Tuesday, 5 August 2003 12:06 (twenty-two years ago)

To quote Samuel Johnson: "there can be no friendship without confidence, and no confidence without integrity" and "integrity without knowledge is weak and useless, and knowledge without integrity is dangerous and dreadful." Do these sound correct?

Yep.

Nick Southall (Nick Southall), Wednesday, 13 August 2003 08:24 (twenty-two years ago)

If I learn someone has integrity, they stand out better than however handsome/pretty they were when I first met them.

Hell yes, I respect integrity! Tis so rare that anyone seems to have any.

Nichole Graham (Nichole Graham), Wednesday, 13 August 2003 22:20 (twenty-two years ago)

I like how so many people's excuse is that they can't afford it

Millar (Millar), Wednesday, 13 August 2003 22:27 (twenty-two years ago)

Usually quoted by the rich, as well

Nichole Graham (Nichole Graham), Wednesday, 13 August 2003 22:27 (twenty-two years ago)

what some call "integrity" wr2 certain of my actions, is really properly termed "laziness."

Tad (llamasfur), Wednesday, 13 August 2003 22:32 (twenty-two years ago)

Tad! SHHH!!

Millar (Millar), Wednesday, 13 August 2003 22:32 (twenty-two years ago)

it's not exactly a well-kept secret you know, tom

Tad (llamasfur), Wednesday, 13 August 2003 22:33 (twenty-two years ago)

'Integrity' seems like one of those dismal mediocre words ('dignity', also). If all you can say for yourself is that you've got integrity, you must have a lot less besides. If all you can say about me is that I lack integrity, keep it to yourself - it's up to me to decide what I've got. I may fuck you over, but, as I see it, I do so purely.

Eyeball Kicks (Eyeball Kicks), Wednesday, 13 August 2003 22:47 (twenty-two years ago)

'You' being rhetorical obviously.

Eyeball Kicks (Eyeball Kicks), Wednesday, 13 August 2003 22:48 (twenty-two years ago)

I want integrity because it is mediocre. If you don't have those boring, mediocre, run of the mill qualities like dignity and integrity how can you have incredibly striking, unusual, brilliant qualities like heroism or whatever?

isadora (isadora), Wednesday, 13 August 2003 23:08 (twenty-two years ago)

it's up to me to decide what I've got.

Yeah, riiight.
Hey everyone, I've decided I have a huge penis!

oops (Oops), Wednesday, 13 August 2003 23:12 (twenty-two years ago)

With a word like integrity (which suffers from rampant misuse like all such words) it is useful to remember the root meaning, closely allied to integrated and integer. It refers to the quality of being 'all of one piece', or of having all one's parts working together to one end. The modern turn of phrase has recreated the concept as "to have one's shit together".

Pretty much it means you walk your talk, but still deeper than that it means you don't have a hypocritical bone in your body.

What's it good for? It makes one reliable and trustworthy. If you say you'll do it, it is as good as done. Think how much you would like it if everyone around you was like that. You'd know where you stood with them all the time, no exceptions.

Do you respect it? Yes.

Do you want it? Yes.

Who's got it? A fair number of people. I'm sure you know a few.

To some extent, integrity can be borrowed or imposed. People with well-established moral systems, the Ned Flanders types and certain military types, often have noticeable integrity.

More admirable to me are the rarer souls whose integrity is homegrown and less rigid than the ones who have squeezed their native shape into a system and think this is the only path to integrity or the only form it can take.

Yeah, riiight.
Hey everyone, I've decided I have a huge penis!

See, Oops, I practice Empathetic Solipsism. Which means, no matter the length of my penis (although I'm a full 5cm, believe me), I get to decide whether whether it's 'big' or 'small'. Then you can decide about your own. Finally, I decide whether you're right (but I'll always be on your side).

Eyeball Kicks (Eyeball Kicks), Wednesday, 13 August 2003 23:56 (twenty-two years ago)

I have integrity. I find it's usually not appreciated in the workplace and is considered naive by friends.
