Actual Home Cinema

Does anyone know anything about any websites out there that tell you about people who have actual cinemas in their homes - not "Home Cinema Systems" with yer plasma widescreen telly and DVD player with Dolby Surround, etc. - but people who acutally have created cinemas in their houses, with actual projectors and screens and seats and that? I've seen various documentaries and news items over the years on people who have done this (including a Jonathan Ross thing with this guy in California somewhere who had his own Cinerama mini-cinema (the three-screens-joined-together thing) in an unused bedroom!). My Google searches just seem to come up with pages about the aforementioned plasma tellies.

Do you want to actually rent reels and show the real prints, or do you just want to play DVDs and project them on a screen? I suggest getting a top shelf 5.1 monitoring setup with some fat subs and a nice HDTV projector. Projectors actually cost less than the plasma screens but you'll have to change the bulbs eventually. I can't help you with seats, really, but I get the idea that if you google for each individual component you want instead of just 'home theater' et al. you'll have more luck.

Anyone on ILX got a home cinema setup? Our TV's on the fritz and rather than buying a big new TV I was thinking of getting a small(ish) TV for day to day viewing and getting a projector/screen for watching movies. Any advice or experiences gratefully recieved.

I've got a reasonable setup (plasma + blu-ray/HD cable + HD surround receiver), and sporadically have to buy more high-end projectors and audio stuff as part of my job. Been toying with getting a projector for home use too, but shape of living room is not ideal and would probably need to do it in the basement (which needs a bit of TLC before being ready for general use).

As with anything in this arena, it depends v much on what yr budget is? The cost of decent home cinema projectors has come down a lot in the last few years though, so you'll get an excellent Panasonic or Sony for a grand or two. With that said, Optoma do some great entry-level units too.

This is a very cool product. Surround sound speakers for the post-TV generation. It's not ALL about screen size, crushed blacks etc
