my pc is windows 'me'
i am aware i will need a firewire cable (IEEE1394 DV)
what sort of program will i need in order to get the video onto my pc?
i only really want to edit the video, but, could i burn any of this edited video to a cdr?
& yes i know Macs are the way to go in this dept.
thankyou.

I can't help but your thread looked lonely.

You have a firewire card in your PC right? I'm not too familiar with PC video stuff but I assume Adobe Premiere will have what you need.

thankyou slutsky.

Yeah, you'll need a FireWire card (try to get something with a reliable brand - the cheapo generics aren't worth the fuss). Oftentimes they come with some small-time capture software, but Premiere 6 is basically the PC equivalent of the Mac's Final Cut Pro. They have some slight differences, but more or less they are equal.

Oh, and you probably will already have one either with the card or the camera, but you want a 4-pin (camera plug, smaller and slightly bent in on one side) to 6-pin (larger, looks similar to USB, but with a clipped corner) FireWire cable.

Girolamo Savonarola, Thursday, 7 August 2003 06:23 (twenty-two years ago)

Is Premiere 6 really that good?

four years pass...

I have been given an old iPod, and it needs a firewire card. Rather than trying to shoehorn one into my overstuffed and ageing PC, is there such a thing as a firewire to USB adaptor?

no. how old is pc?

electricsound, Thursday, 3 January 2008 07:14 (eighteen years ago)

Damn.

six to eight years old.

S-, Thursday, 3 January 2008 07:30 (eighteen years ago)

i am pretty sure those adaptors exist.

stevienixed, Thursday, 3 January 2008 08:46 (eighteen years ago)

nah, not really -- not in a form that doesn't involve sticking another card in the back of the PC.

just buy a usb-to-ipod cable instead. it'll fit into the ipod. i have an old one and had to switch over recently and it worked fine.

jergïns, Thursday, 3 January 2008 17:29 (eighteen years ago)

Depending on the age of the iPod, that may not work.

if his PC's that old it may not even have a USB port..

Tracer Hand, Thursday, 3 January 2008 17:49 (eighteen years ago)

jhøshea, Thursday, 3 January 2008 19:12 (eighteen years ago)

That doesn't convert between USB and FW.

libcrypt, Thursday, 3 January 2008 22:05 (eighteen years ago)

Okay, the iPod is (I'm pretty sure...) third generation, circa 2003. It's the one with the four buttons above the touch-sensitive wheel. It has a long 'dock' connection at the bottom.

PC is from 2000/2001 IIRC, and it has several USB ports.

S-, Friday, 4 January 2008 00:04 (eighteen years ago)

No, you just need a usb to ipod cable like was mentioned before.

svend, Friday, 4 January 2008 01:08 (eighteen years ago)

seriously i have second gen with the red lightup buttons and using a usb to ipod cable worked fine for me when my firewire died a few weeks ago. buy the cable and return it if it doesn't work?

haha yes exactly xpost

jergïns, Friday, 4 January 2008 01:09 (eighteen years ago)

Okay, I'll give one of those a go. I believe the dude who gave it to me said he tried with a USB cable once and it would only charge, not sync.

S-, Friday, 4 January 2008 01:16 (eighteen years ago)

It is one of these:

However mine wil not contain RHCP ever.

S-, Friday, 4 January 2008 01:20 (eighteen years ago)

mine's the same one and the new cable worked but i'm repeating myself and ymmv

jergïns, Friday, 4 January 2008 01:22 (eighteen years ago)

Okay, I will get this:

One more question, the model is not listed there specifically, are all iPod 'dock' connections the same?

S-, Friday, 4 January 2008 01:29 (eighteen years ago)

It worked but when connected to USB the battery runs down in about 10 minutes wtf?

S-, Monday, 14 January 2008 05:18 (eighteen years ago)

it's a bizarro cable

electricsound, Monday, 14 January 2008 05:25 (eighteen years ago)

Don't you know anyone with a cable you could borrow?

Catsupppppppppppppp dude 茄蕃, Monday, 14 January 2008 05:58 (eighteen years ago)

Yeah, I tried with a couple of different cables...
