in summer the fire-escape door is open and i can go out and gaze across the vast magical emptied seamless escher-like landscape of roofs and rooftop walkways and outside metal stairways which stretches all the way from the side of where i work — parallel to pentonville road — to the back of angel

That's fascinating

with bold jumping and good cat-burglar balance i could travel a quarter of a mile at rooftop level, w/o touching the ground except at high speed if slipped or miscalculated

i plan such routes to calm the inner flail

Nice! I get to go and sit in the grounds of this old stately home that I work in. I can sit behind some strategically placed trees, so I am unable to see my work building & it's unable to see me. If I sit still & quiet enough the rabbits & deers can be seen. It's pretty idyllic all in all & is very calming & soothing.

there is also a fire escape as well for me. I look across and there's bloomsbury theatre and the ppl passing by.

I'm also very fond of the lakes at the university, where I go and feed the ducks and watch the fucking enormous dragonflies.

Just looking out my window is an escape for me. The grass is very plush-looking and green and there are these beautiful trees that blossom in the springtime. It's rather unreal. Inside, my overhead light and computer buzz loudly and the decor is fairly monotone. But I can hear the birds in the morning and see the leaves flutter in the wind.

When I still lived at home, there was a tiny room in the basement that was dark and musty and lined with bookshelves. I could shut myself up in there for hours to read or just get away from things.

I haven't found a satisfactory replacement since then.

"Alice opened the door and found that it led into a small passage, not much larger than a rat-hole: she knelt down and looked along the passage into the loveliest garden you ever saw. How she longed to get out of that dark hall, and wander about among those beds of bright flowers and those cool fountains..."

I work in a market town overlooking a trickly river. Unfortunately, it's the river Rom and this is Essex at its Essexist. Even Monrovia looks more pleasant than Romford. At least you don't see 18 year olds swigging stella with their t-shirts tucked in their tracksuit bottoms. I also spotted some fifteen year old girls that weren't pushing prams. Outsiders, I suspect.

Not an exact place, but... Occasionally, if I'm still up at 2 or 3 AM on a weekday, I love to take a walk on the streets when no one's there (I live somewhat off the city centre). All the familiar places look so different when no one's there. And if I do see some people, I wonder what's their story and how come they're still up at this late hour...

That's something I love about Helsinki - it definitely isn't "a city that never sleeps", from monday to thursday it is quite quiet after 2 AM, when most of the bars close. That's when you can have one of those special magical moments, with friends or by yourself.

Tuomas (Tuomas), Wednesday, 6 August 2003 12:04 (twenty-two years ago)

These places are wonderfully important. Poetically enough I have a special SECRET TOILET at university that is somehow always vacant (the whole room, obv) when I need somewhere to pull myself together, also the music dept. library is generally quiet and only populated (if at all) by nerdy music students who present no "threat". There's a nearly impossibly beautiful (the sand makes a lovely sound, a low scrunching note) beach down south a bit, but it isn't nearby enough to be much use except in my head. I had a fire escape too at my worst, when I was secretly scribbling my number out of peoples' books, the height and invisibilty was lovely. Mostly though I have a person who makes me feel the way these places "try" to.

Tuomas (Tuomas), Wednesday, 6 August 2003 12:07 (twenty-two years ago)

Lloyd Maunder.

Nick Southall (Nick Southall), Wednesday, 6 August 2003 12:08 (twenty-two years ago)

I also like to dig a hole in the woods and sit in it

Andrew Thames (Andrew Thames), Wednesday, 6 August 2003 12:09 (twenty-two years ago)

You serious?

Tuomas (Tuomas), Wednesday, 6 August 2003 12:10 (twenty-two years ago)

Nick Southall (Nick Southall), Wednesday, 6 August 2003 12:12 (twenty-two years ago)

joan vich (joan vich), Wednesday, 6 August 2003 12:52 (twenty-two years ago)

I wouldn't sully it w/that kind of activity

Andrew Thames (Andrew Thames), Wednesday, 6 August 2003 12:55 (twenty-two years ago)

the toilet, or the hole?

joan vich (joan vich), Wednesday, 6 August 2003 12:56 (twenty-two years ago)

The toilet, the hole's nothing but a Seinfeld reference after all, not much use for shitting in

Andrew Thames (Andrew Thames), Wednesday, 6 August 2003 12:58 (twenty-two years ago)

geez guys!! way to ruin my thread!!

mark s (mark s), Wednesday, 6 August 2003 13:00 (twenty-two years ago)

I started in entire sincerity, don't blame me

Andrew Thames (Andrew Thames), Wednesday, 6 August 2003 13:02 (twenty-two years ago)

No more shit/chat you gutter brain's.

As to stilling the soul, when I lived in the mountains on a resort, I lived in such close quarters with 50 people with no privacy that I used to hike/ sometimes run the 6Km to a spot where two glacial rivers runs together. I would sit on a picnic table at the joint of the rivers and let the wind blow over me and release all my stress. And stare into the Mountains and try to imagine there creation. I miss that spot.
