Tell me about your music.

We've probably had this thread before, but I can't find one, so here we go. Lots of people make reference to their bands/musical projects on various threads, but I want a list of every current musical project you have, what kind of music it is, what you think of its value, what you do with the results, etc. If you have a current musical project and are an ILXor, it is your duty to post here.

NA (Nick A.), Wednesday, 6 August 2003 15:50 (twenty-two years ago)

There duty is to contribute to the ILX comp!

jel -- (jel), Wednesday, 6 August 2003 15:55 (twenty-two years ago)

That too. But this takes less effort, and will thus be more popular.

NA (Nick A.), Wednesday, 6 August 2003 15:56 (twenty-two years ago)

ive written the same four songs about a thousand times & counting

kephm, Wednesday, 6 August 2003 16:17 (twenty-two years ago)

This is very disappointing. I had expected 125 new answers by the time I was back from lunch. Don't y'all like to self-promote?

NA (Nick A.), Wednesday, 6 August 2003 17:04 (twenty-two years ago)

I fart on snare drums for cash.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Wednesday, 6 August 2003 17:11 (twenty-two years ago)

I've finally given up on music. However, someone paid $50 for information about my old band on Google Answers. Weird huh?

Aaron W (Aaron W), Wednesday, 6 August 2003 17:26 (twenty-two years ago)

dronedronedronedronedronedrone. Rinse, lather, repeat.

Chris Barrus (Chris Barrus), Wednesday, 6 August 2003 18:40 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm a semi-professional chorister with three Boston-area ensembles. I also write Rebirth-based dance music.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Wednesday, 6 August 2003 19:52 (twenty-two years ago)

Nick knows this. Most of you do because I talk about it all the time.
Anyway, I have a band called Times Ten and I play guitar in the Lookups, but there's no lovely webpage for that one.

Sarah Mclusky (coco), Wednesday, 6 August 2003 19:55 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm a semi-professional chorister

Initially read by me as 'semi-professional chortler,' which seems apt.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 6 August 2003 19:57 (twenty-two years ago)

I also feel like everyone knows this by now, but my band is called the Minor Thirds and I play in a friend's band called Celesteville. I write songs about the importance of lying to your loved ones and how awesome it would be to die in far northern Saskatchewan.

Chris P (Chris P), Wednesday, 6 August 2003 20:01 (twenty-two years ago)

I write songs and play keyboards for Canasta. We're kinda chamber-pop, with violin and piano and (sometimes) trombone.

I'm happy with how's it going -- we've had some really nice-sized crowds come see us, and we're just finishing up our debut EP -- but all too often, I get frustrated with the slow pace and the compromises involved when you work with six people (one of whom, our singer, is a major control freak).

I'm forever talking about some future solo project that I imagine would be more post-rockish (and more ME), but I don't know when that will ever come to fruition.

jaymc (jaymc), Wednesday, 6 August 2003 20:10 (twenty-two years ago)

Yep. I play in an acoustic trio. We call ourselves Afton after a character in my favorite book. We sound like Nick Drake, Simon and Garfunkel, Kings of Convenience. We make sad songs.

Chris V. (Chris V), Wednesday, 6 August 2003 20:30 (twenty-two years ago)

Tugboat are my band and we are lazy sods who as of TOMORROW (yay!) start recording our second elpee which will be ACE finally get us some respect in our useless goddamn hometown. er where was i? oh yes it's indiepop, bite me if that's not your thing.

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Wednesday, 6 August 2003 22:24 (twenty-two years ago)

My friend ZeroZero and I are in an IDM/Techno/Rave/Eclectic act called Autofire.
I have, until a year ago used nothing but freeware (mostly Impulse Tracker) to produce my tracks and he has been experimenting with other programs such as Fruityloops. Because of this we rarely compose anything together, just meet up and decide what tracks to play live/put on a CD. My stuff goes into the cheekier side of IDM and I get a bit self-referential whereas ZeroZero's stuff is more pounding and Techno based.

dog latin (dog latin), Wednesday, 6 August 2003 23:21 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm in a band called Metallic that hasn't written or recorded any songs yet.

Aaron A., Wednesday, 6 August 2003 23:24 (twenty-two years ago)

anybody who wants a c90 of my recent bands' work give me an e-mail and will talk a swap. The first side of the tape is an "album" by my one man band The Superpowers, and it's all about the pain. The second side has two "EPs" by my REAL band Harlem Heat (on hiatus), one song by my old band the Cocaines, and a couple songs by Hot Commodity, my current keyboard-drums duo. If you want a ninety minute blast of the State College lo-fi experience, this is IT.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Wednesday, 6 August 2003 23:28 (twenty-two years ago)

I still have a CDR of my old stuff before I acquired half the gear pictured above, it's got terrible mixing but it did make it onto a split 12" and a compilation on Mad Monkey Records, back when I was on the IDM & 313 lists...

I also have a CDR of selected brilliant moments from my college noise band, The Inn Bread Miss Ann Thrope, which features a completely priceless monologue by my good friend Mr. Livedog.

Millar (Millar), Wednesday, 6 August 2003 23:34 (twenty-two years ago)

I leave it to my friends these days as they're much better at it than me, but every once in a while, if there's no one else around I can't resist picking up the guitar and running through some of the old songs b/c I am a sentimental old fool.

Matt (Matt), Thursday, 7 August 2003 01:05 (twenty-two years ago)

hey millar i have a mad monkey comp...which one are you?

gaz (gaz), Thursday, 7 August 2003 01:09 (twenty-two years ago)

if it's the one I'm on, it should be pretty obvious

Millar (Millar), Thursday, 7 August 2003 01:13 (twenty-two years ago)

Theory of Obscurity, Thursday, 7 August 2003 02:01 (twenty-two years ago)

Jel, what's the status of ILXCompII? I have a track.

I make bedroomy computer-pop music that tends not to be as meticulous or elaborate as I'd like. Some of it is straightforward electro / synthpop, maybe like OMD or early Depeche Mode or probably just White Town; some of it is cutesy sliced-up hip-hop, like if Timbaland had a Saturday morning cartoon (and wasn't very good at what he did); some of it is like jungle with indie rock guitars; some of it comes out sounding like Belle and Sebastian with MIDI backing. I have also recorded bad covers of: The Sundays' "Hideous Towns," Men Without Hats' "Antarctica," That Dog's "He's Kissing Christian," and the Trash Can Sinatras' "Hayfever."

nabisco (nabisco), Thursday, 7 August 2003 03:34 (twenty-two years ago)

Belle and Sebastian with MIDI backing

OMG, nabisco IS architecture in helsinki!!

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Thursday, 7 August 2003 03:35 (twenty-two years ago)

i am in the telepaths, as you probably know and maybe you have already heard the ceedee through sarah. i am currently preparing for a ramones night with duckling and our other friend, we don't have aname for that yet. i have a solo project which is v sporadic and it is droney and i like to play in unconventional time signatures on my casio.

The Lady Ms Lurex (lucylurex), Thursday, 7 August 2003 05:30 (twenty-two years ago)

[and why are you always hating on the Architecture in Helsinki???]

phil-two (phil-two), Thursday, 7 August 2003 07:13 (twenty-two years ago)

i have been jamming in various loose ensembles all year since our country band fizzled out in feb . have also been occasional guest bass/ electone player in spacedust recently .now i have a 3 piece garage band of my own.... we have been recording sporadically and have some more recording lined up for this weekend (as well as some serious drinking)

hellbaby (hellbaby), Thursday, 7 August 2003 08:08 (twenty-two years ago)

[and why are you always hating on the Architecture in Helsinki???]

i don't *hate* them per se, i just find their brand of shambolic post-Belle and Sebastian pop just tooo cutesy and contrived a lot of the time.

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Thursday, 7 August 2003 08:29 (twenty-two years ago)

i don't have a band yet, but i do have a radio show on friday nights here.

anybody know a band in detroit/ann arbor that needs a bass player?

Kingfish (Kingfish), Thursday, 7 August 2003 12:49 (twenty-two years ago)

I do the vocalizing for Green Theory, a twitchy spastic funky rapcore-if-rapcore-was-fun kinda band.

I'm also currently banging on shit (ie "playing drums") for The Mannequins, my guitarist's girlfriend's project, which is like some old school new wave shit.

I also play around with a 4-track and whatever noise-making things I can get my hands on. None of these songs usually sound anything like each other.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Thursday, 7 August 2003 13:36 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm so jealous. I want to be in the Mannequins! And you could dress them up all cool for shows. *sigh*

Sarah McLUsky (coco), Thursday, 7 August 2003 13:40 (twenty-two years ago)

I record under my own name and as Duermo. I had a few things released a couple of years ago - got great reviews in XLR8r , Breaking Point and Jockey Slut but unfortunately the label I was on wasn't managed properly and momentum was lost.
It's all electronic, mostly 4/4 based. My one rule is to *always* surprise myself.
At the moment I'm remixing some older tunes, doing programming for some new songs, writing a little 1 minute piece for

www.60seconds.org

and producing a rawk record for some friends. The rawk record has been great fun -- . We're going into full on recording in early September here at the studio where I work. I'm producing, engineering and mixing it.

I update what's going on at

www.thebubblelab.blogspot.com

Jay Vee (Manon_70), Thursday, 7 August 2003 14:37 (twenty-two years ago)

i've also decided to reunite my high school band "Mushroom Attic" for a 10 year reunion tour.

Chris V. (Chris V), Thursday, 7 August 2003 15:17 (twenty-two years ago)

That's a fucking long time to tour.

NA (Nick A.), Thursday, 7 August 2003 15:19 (twenty-two years ago)

its been ten years since we broke up. we sounded like ween. we are in talks to convert to an electronic duo.

Chris V. (Chris V), Thursday, 7 August 2003 15:22 (twenty-two years ago)

Actually Sarah, in The Mannequins we DO dress funny (fr'instance, me in cowboy hat & feather bowa & old 80s Pizza Hut Back to the Future sunglasses); not only that, but we set a bunch of actual mannequins up there with us so there's like 15 mannequins on stage, but only 5-6 of them are actual Mannequins; it's hella fun!

nickalicious (nickalicious), Thursday, 7 August 2003 15:24 (twenty-two years ago)

I've been listening to Green Theory a lot lately. This reminds me to buy the CD once my check clears.

Tep (ktepi), Thursday, 7 August 2003 15:28 (twenty-two years ago)

I have a band called The Id. I like the people in the band, I like the music we make. The summer has been slow in terms of shows, but we're putting a second EP together (it just needs art and a title). My main gripe is that things move really slowly, especially songwriting. We practice twice a week for a couple of hours, and it still takes us like 2 months to get a new song together.

I also record a bunch of stuff at home on 8-track. I just finished a cover of 20th Century Boy by T. Rex. Some of it is weird pop, other stuff is ambient/experimental (to me) music. I don't really do anything with this, other than occasionally give it to friends and listen to it loud in my car.

NA (Nick A.), Thursday, 7 August 2003 15:33 (twenty-two years ago)

Someone listens to Gr33n Th30ry!?

*bug-eyed w/ goofy grin*

(We're working on our next album right now, Tep; we're recording it ourselves and taking our time with it so it's as tight as can be, instead of just cranking it out in 5 days like we did with our first one.)

you've made nickalicious' day (nickalicious), Thursday, 7 August 2003 15:34 (twenty-two years ago)

Make sure to mention somewhere on ILE (or email me) when the next album's available! Seriously, cause I rarely read ILM. "Vitamin G" is on five or six of the mix CDs I use when writing. It's honest to God one of the four best songs I know of for action scenes, and I'm not just buttering your biscuit.

Tep (ktepi), Thursday, 7 August 2003 15:37 (twenty-two years ago)

Now there's a phrase.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 7 August 2003 15:37 (twenty-two years ago)

What, "action scenes" or "buttering your biscuit" or both in conjunction?

Chris P (Chris P), Thursday, 7 August 2003 15:40 (twenty-two years ago)

I really should learn to perv-check before posting.

Tep (ktepi), Thursday, 7 August 2003 15:43 (twenty-two years ago)

What is that then, CTRL + P?

nickalicious (nickalicious), Thursday, 7 August 2003 15:56 (twenty-two years ago)

I like to compose all my messages in WordPervect.

Chris P (Chris P), Thursday, 7 August 2003 15:57 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm surprised no one has given props to or promoted the Foxgloves yet, they're pretty great.

Larcole (Nicole), Thursday, 7 August 2003 16:05 (twenty-two years ago)

Nabisco, the comp is just getting off the ground. Ned is taking the MP3's (email him before you send anything), I'm taking the tapes and CD's.

I don't really make much music these days, but might start again one day.

jel -- (jel), Thursday, 7 August 2003 16:30 (twenty-two years ago)

Me and my friend Joe mess around. He calls the band "Walkie Talkies in Deep Space" or something. African guitar and drummachines etc.

lawrence kansas (lawrence kansas), Thursday, 7 August 2003 16:40 (twenty-two years ago)

i made some records a few years ago, but nobody bought them so i stopped.
i'm going to make another one soon though. that'll teach em.

joni, Thursday, 7 August 2003 16:52 (twenty-two years ago)

i REALLY REALLY REALLY want to hear the cover of 20th century boy.

The Lady Ms Lurex (lucylurex), Thursday, 7 August 2003 21:27 (twenty-two years ago)

I wish I had it in my heart to just make shoddy IDM instead of dancepop and this other stuff I'm doing. My life would be a lot easier.

Millar (Millar), Thursday, 7 August 2003 21:50 (twenty-two years ago)

di, shoot me an email with your address and I'll send you that and some other stuff. It's in return for the telepaths cd you sent me and sarah. my email is backwards. naamme @ yahoo.com

NA (Nick A.), Friday, 8 August 2003 14:59 (twenty-two years ago)

Di, did I have you send Telepaths stuff to my PO box? I really should go check it one of these days...

Chris P (Chris P), Friday, 8 August 2003 15:02 (twenty-two years ago)

I play bass in a new wave band that was called the Sweater Girls until recently. I think we may now be planning a one-off show of Brian Eno covers under the name the Great Pretenders (sadly, the Warm Jets and Burning Airlines were both already taken). Also, Lisa & I do some home recording...

Douglas (Douglas), Friday, 8 August 2003 15:26 (twenty-two years ago)

i am in a band called daniel tiger. we do not have a website nor downloadable, nor purchasable materials. but look for us at an 'up with people' concert near you.

mandee, Friday, 8 August 2003 15:48 (twenty-two years ago)

That's a good band name though.

NA (Nick A.), Friday, 8 August 2003 15:51 (twenty-two years ago)

I play drums (sometimes bass drum and sometimes snare drum) in Mama Digdown's Brass Band, a New Orleans-style brass band. The new album is really good, and we're working on putting out a compilation with us and a couple of bands from New Orleans.

Other than that I play in some jazz trios/quartets in town, nothing too regular at the moment. I'd love to get in a rock band since I haven't been in one since high school.

Jordan (Jordan), Friday, 8 August 2003 15:56 (twenty-two years ago)

hey thanks nick!

chris, i have not sent your copy yet cos i have been wayyyy broke but i will pop it in the post next week. :-)

The Lady Ms Lurex (lucylurex), Saturday, 9 August 2003 01:18 (twenty-two years ago)

My three ways of making music:

-With one potentially professional band (playing bass)
CD mastered by the same guy who mastered the Roots and getting lots of good buzz from fans.

-With another band (less professional, more for fun)

-by self:
This is mostly done as a fun and creative activity experimenting with the style and form of music. I do anything like percussion drumming pieces, electronic, noise, and singer-songwriting improvising with acoustic guitar. I mostly approach any of these songs I make as a study of music and how it's made. It's value is in giving me experience and fun. Because It's the making of it I enjoy, I don't really care too much about what I do with it after It's made. Occasionally I share a few songs with friends, and they often think it is good.

I also play Piano pieces from sheet music and in a few ensembles including Gamelon, Steel Drum, and Wind Ensemble (playing French Horn)

A Nairn (moretap), Saturday, 9 August 2003 03:18 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm in a band called "Spinslut". We wear wetsuits and eat live eels on stage. Our motto : " Do not think about how much things can hurt!" We often enjoy riced crispys from our caterer, Fat Fucker. We do not ever make love, but we once produced a human through collective concentration. We always expect to have joy.

Mike Hanle y (mike), Saturday, 9 August 2003 03:22 (twenty-two years ago)

You should come play NYC Mike, you'd get signed immediately.

Ally (mlescaut), Saturday, 9 August 2003 20:29 (twenty-two years ago)

yeah, spinslut's schtick sounds suspiciously like fischerspooner. shit, they'd blow fischerspooner off the stage!

Tad (llamasfur), Saturday, 9 August 2003 20:32 (twenty-two years ago)

in any of you need a gig in ann arbor/detroit, i help book a place around there and can fit you into the sched.

Kingfish (Kingfish), Saturday, 9 August 2003 23:21 (twenty-two years ago)

as of TOMORROW (yay!) start recording our second elpee

yay we started today. got basic tracks for 5 songs done! and they didn't suck! i should have my own thread for this (but i think i'll just save it for livejournal instead)

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Sunday, 10 August 2003 08:52 (twenty-two years ago)
