I am in LAX and the fatigue is getting intense

I got on a plane in Brisbane God-knows-when ago, caught a few hours of sleep in a Malaysian aiport hotel before getting back on the plane, got off the plane to stretch my legs again in Taipei while they refueled it & now I've been in the L.A. airport for four and a half hours - only five more to go and I get to get back on the plane! And fly to Chicago and switch planes and then I'm finally home after something like 36 hours in transit!

This is really neither question nor complaint, just my increasingly fragmented stream of consciousness*

*I use the term "conscious" loosely in this context obv.

Heya, great to see you back! Get some sleep now or something or hunt up a bit of food or whatever. Man, there should be a rescue team to take you to Encounter or something. How were the shows?

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 7 August 2003 01:19 (twenty-two years ago)

the one i saw was GREAT

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Thursday, 7 August 2003 01:20 (twenty-two years ago)

Thank you ESOJ! Most of the shows were keen, esp. that second Melbourne one and the Sydney one a couple of days later. Also, Australian radio interviewers=lots of fun! Which was a nice surprise because there are some hella dreadful interviewers elsewhere in the great wide world

countdown to random word association closer to "zero" than "one" I fear

Rah! :-) I will not foist sentences on you further if that will make your brain soft.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 7 August 2003 01:24 (twenty-two years ago)

J0hn Darn1elle (J0hn Darn1elle), Thursday, 7 August 2003 01:30 (twenty-two years ago)

Welcome more-or-less-back, John :)

Tep (ktepi), Thursday, 7 August 2003 01:30 (twenty-two years ago)

ah man, wish i'd seen this earlier, or you posted earlier.

my mom lives about a mile from LAX (WESTCHESTER IN DA HIZOUSE!!)

there's a record store just down the street (literally walking distance from the airport) on Sepulveda called Soundsations across the street from the In & Out. they have a huge used selection and, although they're super nice guys, they're kinda clueless when it comes to music. What this means is that you'll find some incredibly cool stuff for really cheap.

JasonD (JasonD), Thursday, 7 August 2003 01:59 (twenty-two years ago)

wish you'd posted earlier because i think they close at 8pm

JasonD (JasonD), Thursday, 7 August 2003 02:02 (twenty-two years ago)

and I would've gone, too, but probably for the best as my forthrightly invegetable what mine eyes decided in-house planet flavor besides, if you catch my drift

J0hn Darn1elle (J0hn Darn1elle), Thursday, 7 August 2003 02:52 (twenty-two years ago)

if you catch my drift

uh, no, not really

="I am so tired that my internal monologue, here reproduced in part for your pleasure [or not], has descended into near-total nonsense which nevertheless sounds to my inner ear as though it had to it its own internal logic"

J0hn Darn1elle (J0hn Darn1elle), Thursday, 7 August 2003 03:05 (twenty-two years ago)

i feel your pain. last week had 17hrs of traveling (2flights) and the second flight (hamburg to san francisco) i had 2 preteen sisters kicking my chair and seeing how hard they could slam down the trays

JasonD (JasonD), Thursday, 7 August 2003 03:11 (twenty-two years ago)

in this age of Total Information Awareness it'd be imprudent to go into much detail about what the afterlife hopefully has in store for children who act up on international flights

J0hn Darn1elle (J0hn Darn1elle), Thursday, 7 August 2003 03:13 (twenty-two years ago)

If yr still online, try eating some really fatty, warm food- that will give you energy to stay awake. :)

Did you fly United back? They had lots & lots of babies crawling the aisles when I fly back from AU... not too many crying, though, as I recall.

lyra (lyra), Thursday, 7 August 2003 03:15 (twenty-two years ago)

hey, i shoulda given you my mom's number. she works at KCRW, a college radio station. it looks like they play your stuff quite a bit

JasonD (JasonD), Thursday, 7 August 2003 03:52 (twenty-two years ago)

Sorry I missed the gig(s) J0hn... I was too broke. Would love to have gone, some 4AD fan I am *mutter*. Next time gadget!

Trayce (trayce), Thursday, 7 August 2003 03:59 (twenty-two years ago)

At KCRW? Would your mom happen to know my friend Eric J. Lawrence?

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 7 August 2003 04:00 (twenty-two years ago)

i've heard her mention his name sometimes. she started out volunteering maybe 10yrs ago so that she could work on Morning Becomes Eclectic (back when chris douridas was still there) and after all this time they finally gave her a paying job. she's head of their concert promotions department. any time they organize a "KCRW Presents..." concert, she hooked it up.

i'll ask her if she talks to Eric much and tell her to tell him, "Ned says hi" (i never know how to tell her i know people from the interweb)

JasonD (JasonD), Thursday, 7 August 2003 04:08 (twenty-two years ago)

Heh, he'll appreciate it, thanks. Now in the meantime, all these free tickets you're about to score for us...

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 7 August 2003 04:13 (twenty-two years ago)

KCRW, a college radio station

gabbneb (gabbneb), Thursday, 7 August 2003 04:15 (twenty-two years ago)

No, Gabbneb, you don't understand -- it's the nearest thing to an Adult Album Alternative (remember that?)/college radio crossover station in the whole LA basin and pulls in a huge amount of listeners, has a very high profile, is some sort of NPR affiliate last I checked, etc. etc.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 7 August 2003 04:17 (twenty-two years ago)

if i still lived in LA i'd get regular hook ups. she always gets invited to the shows but she has a family to take care of so she never goes. if there's any show that you're really dying to see, shoot me an email and i'll see what i can do.

i emailed her and told her to say hi from you.

JasonD (JasonD), Thursday, 7 August 2003 04:19 (twenty-two years ago)

it's community not college radio FYI.

gygax! (gygax!), Thursday, 7 August 2003 04:20 (twenty-two years ago)

well it;s housed in a building at Santa Monica College, so it's an easy mistake to make; they use student workers (I was one a loooonnnggg time ago); there is an affilitation going on.

Orbit (Orbit), Thursday, 7 August 2003 04:23 (twenty-two years ago)

the "crw" stands for "college radio workshop" but they definitely don't like to be referred to as a college station. their programming definitely differs from most college stations', especially in the areas of smugness and listenability.

dan (dan), Thursday, 7 August 2003 05:27 (twenty-two years ago)

Ned, here's what my mom says:

yes, I know EJ very well -- he runs the music library. He also hosts a late-night show called "Dragnet". He's early 30's but loves the oldies -- my generation's music.

Anyway, I like him alot -- will say hi.

JasonD (JasonD), Thursday, 7 August 2003 17:55 (twenty-two years ago)

:-)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 7 August 2003 20:06 (twenty-two years ago)

Dan is OTM re: listenability and smugness

also,
it's the nearest thing to an Adult Album Alternative

but mostly during the weekday mornings where "Morning Becomes Eclectic" gets worse and worse. 'Metropolis' and 'Chocolate City' are good and some of the weekend shows are amazing. That one woman plays a lot of microhouse which is super-cool.
