So, concerning the ODB parole special on VH1...

ODB was surprisingly quiet, sad, distracted. He misses drugs because "life is boring to me otherwise." He comes home to his mom's house every night at 9 PM. He doesn't see much of his Wu-Tang buddies. He's gained a lot of weight. He sometimes seems to struggle to come up with his patented ODB malapropisms, and sometimes his strangeness seems completely ingrained, natural.

My punk-as-fuc bootleg cable was disconnected. :(

odb's exploitation makes me angrier than i can possibly express

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Friday, 8 August 2003 02:09 (twenty-two years ago)

by that i mean the exploitation OF odb

i heard prison wasn't very pleasent for him. (obv. prison is no caribbean vacation, but it was especially bad for him from what i read)

I'm with Jess. I deleted my original snarky comment for this thread on that point because I didn't like the way it sounded.

I'm sorry for him, but man I hope he's got plans/opportunity for a new record.

ditto what jess/strongo and ned said.

I feel more than a little guilty for having watched it, as I suppose I'm supporting the exploitation you mention--it is really horrible. I suppose the producers' rationale is that being in the spotlight in this way might help to keep him straight. That seems pretty...for the lack of a better word...patronizing to me. The Osbournes--where Jack developed an abuse problem that was (to my understanding) entirely written out of the show until it became a public event--suggests that this is hogwash.

amateurist (amateurist), Friday, 8 August 2003 04:33 (twenty-two years ago)

i've had no cable for the summer.

still, hopefully he'll be back recording soon. I dunno--have the guy run laps & drink lots of tea for the energy/weight-loss.

or chug Mt Dew, which probably won't help the weight thing. do something, i guess.

I was turned off my the exploitation also. So was my TV after the first 20 minutes. That was shortly after the part in the car where he was having trouble spitting his verses...made me sad.

oops (Oops), Friday, 8 August 2003 04:45 (twenty-two years ago)

detail how he has been exploited plz. i really don't know this info.

Texas Sam (thatgirl), Friday, 8 August 2003 07:13 (twenty-two years ago)

is listening to any ODB on any record not an exploitation? (that's not an assertion.)

gabbneb (gabbneb), Friday, 8 August 2003 14:04 (twenty-two years ago)

But if you listen to "Pop Shit" he sounds really happy. "Guezzz whozzz hommmme guezzzz whozzz hommmme". Though on that Kanye West song he just says stuff at the end and sounds quite sad. The image of him leaving prison and signing to the roc and jumping straight into the studio is a very happy one.

re: Exploitation, on one hand, at least he's getting paid for this, whereas many formerly incarcerated celebs just get followed around with no payoff.

I saw ODB about a month ago at a Vice party. Brooklyn Zoo went on first and tried to get things going, but they were such inept performers and wanted for stage presense, so nothing good came of it. They mostly ended up bitching out the crowd and complaining about the monitor (which was quite low, but it couldn't go any higher for sure).

Then ODB comes on and WRECKS SHIT. Major stage presense, everyone loves him. He had put on a little weight and we could all see it, and his endurance was clearly being pushed after three songs or so -- like he was trying to get his body to do the same shit when he was strung out, only sober. It was a little sad, but if he could get his shit straight and get his stamina back, he could dust about any show out there right now.

I would kill to see Russell Jones' version of a training montage. Maybe Louis CK could direct it. Or Rusty Cundieff.

I watched this last night. One of the saddest things for me was the lack of love he received from the Wu while he was locked down. And RZA's attempt to curtail any new recording just smacked of cold-heartedness to me. I lost a LOT of respect for him right there.

I watched it this afternoon. poor ODB, i feel bad for him. Hopefully he'll stay clean...but I doubt it.
