T/S: First-Person Shooters -- sneaky-sneaky or run & gun?

Which do you prefer, and have a better time playing? a game where stealth is a part of it(No One Lives Forever, Thief), or a strictly run & gun & blow-shit-up romp(UT, any game from Id, Serious Sam)? Why?

what about games that let you choose between the two different approaches, like Half-Life or Deus Ex?

I find that I like sneaky games more, as run&gun-types tend to have less of a narrative to get in the way of all the exploding-demon and hott zombie-on-zombie action.

I guess this could also apply to 3rd Person adventure games--TR, Metal Gear, Syphon Filter, etc. PC, console, don't matter.

i like to run and gun...but splinter cell is a totally different experience. very cool. i almost shit my pants last night with 15 seconds on the clock and me trying to disarm a bomb. and then, sneak up to some wall mines (which are movement sensitive) and disarm them.

Perfect Dark, four players, laptops, poison knives, grenages, dragons and CMPs in the G5 - I am seriously bad. Fuck stealth - break out the carnage.

Failing that it was always proxims in the Felicity for 10 minutes of living hell.

I never had the patience for putting in the hours of single player brain-sapping concentration on the Dark (or any other game for that matter) - but put me in with a buch of other players and I'll rip them up.

the Autofire Sentry Laptops in Perfect Dark were killer. "how to annoy your roommate, pt 67"

"fuck YOU, dude! stop using those!"

"hahahah! suck on it!"

There's a sense of accomplishment w/ sneak kills, esp. games that reward you specifically for them (e.g. Fear Effect, Tenchu, to some degree MGS), prob because you honestly need to have mastered some of the gameplay to do it consistently.

Anyway, we should have an ILX Perfect Dark/GoldenEye tourney. I work you all. And at Mario Kart too.

A good combination of the two. Right now I'm playing Return to Castle Wolfenstein, and they do a pretty good job of leaving opportunities for you to break out the sniper rifle or even sneak up on someone and knife them in the back.

Hitman 2. Oh man that game is so incredibly involving. I played a Splinter Cell demo, seems along the same sort of heavy-strategy lines. I can't stand Doom-style shooters - why wouldn't I just play Xenophobe instead?

hitman 2 is impossible.

I used to play counterstrike and mostly went in guns blazing - mainly because to win, you had to "inspire" your teammates to follow you or else your team would be mired in defense.

so, "daddy was a rollin' stone" = "run & gun", huh?

HALO for the XBOX. Lovely combination of both styles, run and gun and sneaky-sneaky. Nothin' like being low on ammo and health, expertly evading an alien horde and then coming across an abandoned tank. CARNAGE.

I usually get horribly motion-sickness from playing first-person shooters, but damn... that Halo game is crazy. Made me scream like a little girl

Sarah (starry), Saturday, 9 August 2003 20:02 (twenty-two years ago)
