Christian Vasbotn Braaten (Christian Vasbotn Braaten), Sunday, 10 August 2003 10:05 (twenty-two years ago)

I prefer Nintendo as a company and by the quality of their products, but I think the XBox is better than the Cube.

Andrew (enneff), Sunday, 10 August 2003 11:46 (twenty-two years ago)

nintendo is norway, sony is finland, and microsoft is sweden. denmark is sega.

fortunate hazel (f. hazel), Sunday, 10 August 2003 12:47 (twenty-two years ago)

the playstation has certainly bought me the most joy. and mostly because of the final fantasy games. playing final fantasy on playstation, its like listening to the Dead, you just fall off into another little world after a while, and it can be scary cos you start to think sephiroth is a imminent threat to your own life, but the beautiful moments, like when you first meet princess garnet in ff9, and shes like the most perfect woman i ever seen, and just that moment, wow, and its a computer game and shes just some pixels, but somehow thru art and motion and a million japanese guys on the credits there is life in her bones and in her comely flesh whilst locked into that world.

so sony are great for giving me the opportunity to experience that, even though i dont really regard them as a Proper games company, cos they dont understand games, but they didcome up with a very nice system and affordable system on which people that do understand games like Square could make the most beautiful games ive ever seen. iss pro evolution on playstation and its sequels are the best football games ever (ok, soccer). nintendo and sega are Proper games companies, they poured love into it, they were games and games were them. nintendo gameboy is classic. mario 3 on the nes! street fighter 2 on the snes! sega has many classics - the first sonic game on the megadrive definately one of the crazyist trips around. golden axe perhaps? and countless others, i have love for sega. microsoft can go screw themselves, they have nothing on the others, bill gates is a cynical damned capitalist who has locked the earth into a universe of blue screens and a media player that just has the occasional urge to make my systen hang.

Bob Shaw (Bob Shaw), Sunday, 10 August 2003 13:57 (twenty-two years ago)

Bob, I must question you about your FF luvvin. I agree that the gameplay is remarkably deep and worth returning to (e.g. let's see if I junction Bahamat, Shiva and Tonberry to Quistis that should cover most stats plus I have 100 ultima etc. I AM MAXED OUT etc.). HOWEVER. In my estimation a beautiful game has to have more than just enthralling gameplay -- it needs a good story, but FF offers convoluted, burdensome and sometimes cliche plots. FF9 had dead awful dialogue, not even counting the sub-faux-Shakespearean in the play. FF's inadequacies stand out compared against another Square game, Vagrant Story, which actually brought in experts in medieval lit. and sorts, and has the best dialogue of any videogame I've ever played. (The game itself is pretty good too, though not on the scale of FF honestly.)

Leee (Leee), Monday, 11 August 2003 05:27 (twenty-two years ago)

ah yes i have vagrant story too and i agree with you that the dialogue and story of that was one of the best in any game ive ever played. i thought ff9 had a good story to be honest, and so did ff7. as for the final fantasy dialogue, well its not perfect sometimes, but i always seem to learn to love characters even thru the strained english. my love of ff is based a lot on the visual, even if the dialogue fails, i still get a feeling off of the characters, and thats what i get lost in.

chaki (chaki), Monday, 11 August 2003 08:00 (twenty-two years ago)

i Hate Sony thoose Idiots Says Hello there Americans Buy a gun and Shoot Youre BestFriend and shoot him twice

Christian Vasbotn Braaten (Christian Vasbotn Braaten), Monday, 11 August 2003 16:52 (twenty-two years ago)

You are right about getting " a feeling off of the characters," though it's clearly been for me periphery characters and not the cookie-cutter lead protagonists. Periphery characters like Vivi in 9 and Quistis in 8 and Aeris in 7 had a lot more emotional impact on me in part because their characterizations are subtler. I also love their twee characters (Yuffie -vs- Selphie CORKINESS FITE).

Leee (Leee), Monday, 11 August 2003 17:26 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah, FF7 and Metal Gear Solid are probably my two favorite gaming experiences. They're both so immersive. FF7 is just flawless, I don't think any of the others really came close for me (got to the last boss and never finished FF8, only played about an hour of FF9).

So I was a Sony loyalist for a while, and if I got another system I would get a PS2 (Gamecube and X-Box have seemed kinda blech to me, Halo aside). However, my recent spate of infatuation with my Game Boy Advance SP has won me back over to Nintendo. I'm playing Zelda (Link to the Past) for the first time!

Jordan (Jordan), Monday, 11 August 2003 18:30 (twenty-two years ago)

The best role-playing game I've ever played isn't available on a console ("Planescape: Torment"). Of the console games I've played, FF7 was close to immaculate.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Monday, 11 August 2003 18:34 (twenty-two years ago)

FF7 immaculate? Why, in order to breed a gold chocobo you had to cheat in the races!

Leee (Leee), Monday, 11 August 2003 20:29 (twenty-two years ago)

That's a goddamn lie.

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Tuesday, 12 August 2003 08:51 (twenty-two years ago)

I have mentally added "GODDAMN DIRTY APE!" to Andrew's last post and it now it just pops off the screen.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 12 August 2003 09:21 (twenty-two years ago)

...or could it be that I sucked at chocobo racing?

Leee (Leee), Tuesday, 12 August 2003 19:31 (twenty-two years ago)

The Final Fantasy series peaked with six (three in the States and Europe I think) and seven; the newer ones seem very uninteresting.

Curt1s St3ph3ns, Tuesday, 12 August 2003 20:13 (twenty-two years ago)
