the first Sonic was my favorite video game ever, easy, but the Mario line's been a lot more inventive: the other Sonic games were good but none of them really added all that much to the original. plus I have fond memories of the old Mario cartoon, but I'd eat baloney for a week if only I could erase all traces of that early 90s atrocity with Steve Urkel doing Sonic's voice from my brain.

the Sonic "character," such as it is, always struck me as super-Poochy i.e. designed by a committee of people whose research shows that kids want extreme! attitude! which is why I prefer the Mario games to almost anything: lack of "attitude," a quality which got really old ca. 1986

Sonic's attitude counterbalances the overall tweeness of the games. The Mario games are twee all the way. Too twee for me.
