"Seeking answers to big 'mystery ape'"

http://www.cnn.com/2003/TECH/science/08/08/coolsc.mysteryape/index.html

Well not exactly, but I think its amazing that a creature that large could remain hidden for so long. Its makes the diea of a bigfoot hiding in the Pacific NW a little more plausiable.

It's Homer from The Call Of The Simpsons.

A still from the famous 1967 Bigfoot film, which may or may not show a man in a gorilla suit.

Haaaa someone at CNN is a Futurama fan.

Trayce, Thursday, 14 August 2008 04:15 (seventeen years ago)

Er, at Fox News rather.

Trayce, Thursday, 14 August 2008 04:16 (seventeen years ago)

i was reading about this earlier on cryptomundo, where they compared the photos of the "body" and the costume, and surprise! they're identical. you'd think the hoaxers would be smarter.

behold the site of the two doofuses who allegedly "discovered" the body:

weird how that one site keeps referring to the hoaxers as "boys" -- "the Georgia boys"

Would they do that if they were from, say, Vermont? "The Vermont boys."

It's like whoever wrote that thinks they're in the Dukes of Hazzard or something.

new bigfoot doc coming that has practice run footage for patterson-gimlin. whole bigfoot community in huge disarray -- true believers insist "there's more to it than patterson-gimlin" + want to "question the narrative" lol, many others are saying "if the doc does what it says it does, that's the nail in the coffin."

all manner of stuff to dig into if you love this kinda thing - disenchanted youtubes, condescending hand-waves, the lot

The truly amazing thing to me is that the 'patterson-gimlin' film took in so many people. To me it always looked like a guy in a gorilla suit. I guess that's the will to believe at work. The same effect is at work in the UFO community.

NB: I'm perfectly willing to think there are other planets in the universe that have evolved complex life, even complex societies with sophisticated technology (though very rarely), but galaxy-spanning space flight that has specifically and repeatedly visited this planet is an extraordinary claim requiring extraordinary evidence - which evidence doesn't yet exist.

more difficult than I look (Aimless), Saturday, 21 March 2026 18:56 (two months ago)

yeah i mean the literal existence of bigfoot is obviously untrue, like the literal existence of ufos. i'm sympathetic to the impulse to believe this kind of thing though because there are also very obviously great mysteries "out there" which occasionally or maybe even often break through "the plane of our reality" or however you want to phrase it. of course i realize not everyone believes in, well, mystery itself. i think it's in trying to explain mystery in terms of our reality where people get off track.

i'm a little eye rolly about bigfoot bumper stickers and the like though i will chuckle at stuff like "bigfoot is real and he tried to eat my ass" or whatever.

dream mummy (map), Saturday, 21 March 2026 19:27 (two months ago)

I love the Coast to Coast episode where Art Bell played a bunch of purported recordings of Bigfoot screaming in the night

yes, I love the way you put this. the desire to believe in monsters who keep eluding our confirmation -- there's something hopeful about it, although I think a lot of Bigfoot types end up on the general "all conspiracy theories are true" train, which is very boring to me. but there's an element of faith in something beyond our grasp in Bigfoot theory. however in practice these guys are being very funny about this, or many of them are. the ones that aren't being funny are expressing a pretty complex sadness that has its own beauty cf. the hairy man road guy above.
