Soft Focus - C/D

Dud, dud, dud, except in a few cases.

I just saw Wait Until Dark, and loved everything about it, except for the close-ups of Audrey Hepburn shot with soft-focus.

This is a thriller! Hepburn is the most beautiful woman ever! We don't need cheesy 1930s-esque filters and lighting!

Anyone have examples where soft-focus makes a movie better, to ease my hatred?

I like it sometimes, but maybe not for the intended reasons, because it sometimes comes across as eerie.

Once when I had inadvertently taken some ketamine as a 16-year-old* I was climbing up a ladder into my mate's loft when a; the centre of my vision (ie; where I see from or my eyes) raised approx 2ft from the top of my head and allowed me to see 360 degres all around me as what I saw was no longer limited by my eyes, and b; everything shifted into gold-tinted soft focus like I was in some psychedelic Hovis advert. It was quite cool, but I'm not sure I'd want it to happen again.

*No a vet did not mistake me for a horse.
