i don't mean any disrespect by callin em "sonsabitches", actually i got mad respect for a lot of religious motherfuckers

duane, Monday, 11 August 2003 00:41 (twenty-two years ago)

obviously they shouldn't (though by "terrestrial authority" I assume you mean "secular authority"), but have they ever not?

Take away the religious part and I'd say 'no'. I mean, I'd have no problem if a religious person had authority, provided they weren't a sonuvabitch.

If them religious motherfuckers want to have that kind of party, I'm going to put my dick in the mashed potatoes.

by "religious sonsabitches" I assumed you meant clergy, don't really know why I thought that though.

no i mean "terrestrial" authority as opposed to on mars or somewhere! no yr right i mean secular authority.

duane, Monday, 11 August 2003 00:47 (twenty-two years ago)

just to distinguish it from authority within the church etc

s1utsky (slutsky), Monday, 11 August 2003 00:49 (twenty-two years ago)

but yeah you know what i mean - the conflict of interest, the thing jeebs said about camel:eye of needle::rich man:kingdom of heav.
also from the POV of those of us who think this life is all you get, do you want it in the hands of people who think otherwise. & stuff

duane, Monday, 11 August 2003 00:51 (twenty-two years ago)

it's clearly always been a problem but sometimes unavoidable when religion is such an essential part of a society's structure

the Premier of Saskatchewan is a United Church Minister, and it seems to not really have much to do with his agenda. Though the United Church in Canada is very tolerant and liberal (they had gay & lesbian ministers like ten years ago), and he's a democratic socialist. But I've never heard him make any overtly religious statements.

Should not Christians be great secular leaders too, if they really aspired to emulate Jesus and all that? There's not too much in the teachings and behavious of Jesus that wouldn't be a big improvement on, for instance, George Bush. I guess the same would be true of many or most other religions, but we all know that there is a gap between that theory and the reality.

Quebec has a long history of church and state laying in bed together prior to the quiet revolution.

usually with the church on top. I could extend this metaphor more graphically, but I gotta phone Chris P. right away.
