...people are switching to wine, spirits and alcopops, according to The Guardian. I want to do all I can do reverse this trend. I'm starting now. Anyone care to help?

Beer good, no beer bad. If I had stuck to beer yesterday my head would be clear now, instead of clogged up w/salty drinks and vodka.

Richard Tunnicliffe, Monday, 24 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Now RickyT as I think you do know deep inside your madnut, that would not be the case. The salty drinks are not to blame! Consumption of cheap wodka = the reason for somewhat slow head and YUKKY FUZZY GOB. Yeesh.

And the need for consumption of Margaritas had grown to the point where it was SO U&K evev Jamiroquai was suffered. And Woo Woo's, and Mojitos... and bitter... and wodka cranberry...

Drinking on Sundays is actually rather gr8, innit?

Sarah, Monday, 24 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

It is rather fine. What is less fine is not brushing yr teeth before you come to work, when doing so is very necessary indeed to get rid of evil mouth scazz.

Go to the average pub in the UK, (or café here in The Netherlands), and the most popular beers are bland, characterless, botched attempts at lager/pilsner-worse than cats-piss. Britain brews a fine selection of beers but for many 'Real Ale' seems to conjure images of paunchy bearded bores, a shame. The producers seem to lack confidence in promoting them, and availability is often limited.

My own developing interest in Belgian beer occured last year when quite by accident I stumbled across a Belgian beer festival during a visit to Antwerp. The variety and quality of beers available was staggering. A whole gamut of flavours and styles made mostly by small independent brewers with reverence and respect. How anyone could prefer a 'Bacardi-Breezer' to a good beer quite incomprehensible.

Can't you find a loo which sells "staying over" packs? I can recommend the ladies loo in Cov. Gdn piazza for this! However, where you could find something like this in z5 I have no kloo.

HOORAH for finding chocolate in your bag!!

Sarah, Monday, 24 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Boards opinion on India Pale Ale?

Me, I think it's SWELL!

Sarah, Monday, 24 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Belgium beers are great... i also love the fact that the double or triple brewed beers can be up to 10% alcohol, and yet they taste lovely, unlike Tennett's Super etc

m jemmeson, Monday, 24 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Best named hardcore Belgian beer = Optimus Brune. 10% ABV and tastes like fizzy port.

Richard Tunnicliffe, Monday, 24 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Beer is Englands greatest contribution to world culture (aside from Marlowe and Shakespeare and all those dead white guys)

anthony, Monday, 24 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I've said it before but I HATE BEER. Lots. It gives me headaches even after one sip. I prefer the vodka/cranberry thing because it rebuilds your kidney's infrastructure even as it is being destroyed by the alcohol.

suzy, Monday, 24 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Beer is possibly the most vile tasting substance on earth.

Ally, Monday, 24 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

No no! Miso soup is far worse. Beer is wuvly.

Emma, Monday, 24 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

If I drank Amstel Light, Coronas and Red Stripe I'd probably agree with you Ally.

stevo, Monday, 24 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

No, no, no. Beer consumption has hit a natural low purely because of the number of ILE people who have been off the sauce lately. Mr Hopkins, Mr Cabbage, me... I'm sure there are more. This is all the explanation required.

Madchen, Monday, 24 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I've literally tasted every beer known to man. Those are the only three I can find even remotely palatable. And even those are horrible and disgusting and only tolerable if I'm eating buffalo wings.

You all need to be drinking hard liquor, Riesling, and "alcopops". NO MORE BEER, DOWN WITH BEER.

Ally, Monday, 24 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Beer is Englands greatest contribution to world culture (
So why do English people prefer Belgian beer? Here beer consumption was at an all time low. Apparently young people prefer sweet drinks. But the last few months teenagers have realized Red Bull is CRAP and started drinking beer again.

nathalie, Monday, 24 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Who was it that said that drinking beer is like "drinking wood"? Was it Bjork?

Anyway, as for beer.. it depends. Sometimes a creamy dark one hits the spot. Sometimes a piss watery one hits the spot..(usually if accompanied by pizza).

But I can rarely drink more than 2 beers on any given night. I usually end up washing it down with either cider or hard drinks afterwards. Beer is just heavy and puts me to sleep -- not exactly party fuel for me.

Brian MacDonald, Monday, 24 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Fabulous beer, amazing chocolates, cutting-edge techno labels.....underated country Belgium.

stevo, Monday, 24 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Sarah, India Pale Ales are fantastic! There's a local one in the Bay Area called Lagunitas IPA that I drink all the time (when I'm not guzzling other booze, that is).

Sean, Monday, 24 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

vodka/cranberry also has vitamin C. I like Carlsberg once in a while, but there's beer in my fridge that's been there for a year. The absolut citron I keep in the freezer lasts two weeks tops.

Lesley Higgins, Monday, 24 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Lesley, you're quite right; they're good for you! I used to down them like a madman, and felt really healthy.

Sean, Monday, 24 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I heart beer. It is one of the main staples of my diet. This weekend after a lovely evening with my good friend beer I naughtily sampled the wares of his dark cousin, whiskey. While I found Mr. Whiskey quite palatable the events which ensued made me the source of much ridicule from friends and anger from my man. Not a good thing. Am sticking with beer.

Samantha, Monday, 24 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

anyone tried Duval? i can't remember where its from, either Belgium or Holland, but its "brewed in the bottle" which means its something like 10% and its f**kin good sh*t.

di, Monday, 24 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

scene: driving along highway around 3 am. spot billboard. reading: guiness - like drinking your favorite song.

di, Monday, 24 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

To Brian -- yes, Bjork said that. Ergo, Bjork is Ally. *pauses to let curses die down*

Ned Raggett, Tuesday, 25 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I heard this whilst buy wood in Arnolod Laver's they had the radio on. the vox pop they'd interviewed said yeah I drink more wine than beer 'because it gets you pissed quicker'

Ed, Tuesday, 25 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I am officially never speaking to Ned again.
