Oh definitely, i refer to my friends as chicks, birds, girls, bitches (although this is usually sarcastic!)but generally any term like that i use on a regular basis.

i don't think i've ever used 'guy' either. in ireland we use 'yer one' for a woman and 'yer man' for a man, so for me it's either woman, man, yer one or yer man.

I've got no problem with 'chicks.' And I don't mind 'girls' either. In fact, I often forget I'm supposed to be a woman instead of a girl. But I suppose I do mind when a really old guy refers to businesswomen as girls. That's a bunch of crap. But I call women my age 'girls' all the time.

my personal lexicon:

male = guys, dudes, d00ds
female = chicks, gals

oh yeah, and i'll also call a chick, "dude" if i'm speaking to her.

i tend to avoid using the terms "men" and "women", 'cuz they seem like such loaded terms and all-grown-uppy.

When do you grow up from a "girl" to a "woman"? Most of my friends are twenty-something, and I (and everyone else, mostly) still call them girls. Oh, and I do use the Finnish equivalent for "chick" as well, but it probably isn't as derogatory as the English word, since a lot of chicks use it themselves.

I guess it's a personal matter. "Woman" as a word implies a sort of maturity a lot of girls don't feel like having, or don't want to have. The same probably applies to guys as well; I sure as hell don't feel like a "man", even though I'm 24.

obv. here you have to make the distinction between formal and informal use. Formal use should only be boy/girl/man/woman, with juvenile forms being used for those not yet 18. Informal usage = it's all about context and audience. I don't mind if people get offended at certain words, but they shouldn't get further offended if politely asked to explain their reaction.

In general, I think American society is generally pretty cool with the word 'chick' unless the context is obviously derogatory/dehumanizing.
