Part of it is just the usual "we like our athletes, though, we don't want bad things to happen to them." A lot of it is cause it's baseball -- a large chunk of fannishness of which is about history, and the Pete Rose situation directly affects how baseball history is handled. Is the Hall of Fame purely merit-based, which is all it's ever claimed to be? Or is a stamp of approval from MLB, which is how it's acted when the Pete Rose question comes up? Etc.
