How about a predictions league for the coming Prem season on Isle of Everything? Is there anyone out there who'd be any good at organising such a thing?

Daniel (dancity), Tuesday, 12 August 2003 08:26 (twenty-two years ago)

yes, very interested in this. if i had the skills i'd create a website (there used to be one but it's now defunct, probably due to legal constraints) for this...but it could be managed just like William's Top 40 predictions game which is working very well at the moment

stevem (blueski), Tuesday, 12 August 2003 10:11 (twenty-two years ago)

how about this system?

EXACT MATCH = 10 (e.g. you predict Arsenal 2 Man Utd 1 and are right)
CORRECT TEAM WINS, CORRECT SCORE = 5 (e.g. same prediction but Arsenal win 2-0 instead)
CORRECT TEAM WINS = 3 (e.g. Arsenal win 1-0)
SCORE DRAW (BUT SCORE INCORRECT) = 3 (you predicted 1-1 but it's 3-3)
NO SCORE DRAW = 5

Oi! You still haven't submitted a team for this yet.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Tuesday, 12 August 2003 10:19 (twenty-two years ago)

i can set it up like that by tomorrow unless anyone wants to make other suggestions

stevem (blueski), Tuesday, 12 August 2003 10:19 (twenty-two years ago)

Good call stevem, I was thinking of the same thing

chris (chris), Tuesday, 12 August 2003 10:21 (twenty-two years ago)

Matt DC, thanks for pointing out the fantasy football thing. I'll get to it. Stevem, this was indeed inspired by William Bloody's pop thing. I'd be delighted if you could 'set it up.'

Daniel (dancity), Tuesday, 12 August 2003 10:23 (twenty-two years ago)

cool, i can't think of any other good ways of scoring points than the ones already outlined. so i'll start a thread tomorrow (best give it some time for additional suggestions between now and then) in the manner of the Top 40 game.

stevem (blueski), Tuesday, 12 August 2003 10:34 (twenty-two years ago)

i kinda wish Baddiel & Skinner would do a new Fantasy Football League show now...

stevem (blueski), Tuesday, 12 August 2003 10:35 (twenty-two years ago)

possible additions to the scoring system;

CORRECT TEAM, CORRECT SCORE MORE THAN 3 GOALS = BONUS 5 PTS
(E.G. PREDICT ARSENAL WIN 3-0 AND THEY WIN 3-0)

CORRECT TEAM, MORE THAN 3 GOALS = 3
(E.G. PREDICT ARSENAL WIN 3-0 AND THEY WIN 5-2)

this may encourage people to predict higher-scoring wins more often, making it more 'exciting'

stevem (blueski), Tuesday, 12 August 2003 10:39 (twenty-two years ago)

Stevem those modifications seem like fanny dangle to me. I think your original scoring system has a certain elegant simplicity to it. That said I like Swygart's bonus system - maybe you could pick one game each week and we could all predict the number of cards handed out or something?

Tom (Groke), Tuesday, 12 August 2003 10:41 (twenty-two years ago)

We could do it nude, or if you're a bit frigid, partially clothed.

G Man, Tuesday, 12 August 2003 10:50 (twenty-two years ago)

20 points to whoever comes up with best use of the phrase 'fanny dangle' every week

stevem (blueski), Tuesday, 12 August 2003 10:58 (twenty-two years ago)

possible 'bonus' things:

pick a number from 1-90 and if a goal is scored in this minute in any of the games you get 10 pts

predict a goalscorer, if they score you get 10

i feel that football is infinitely more of a lottery than even the pop charts so agree that simplicity is best, but some sort of 'wild card/joker' option is still needed to spice it up

stevem (blueski), Tuesday, 12 August 2003 11:01 (twenty-two years ago)

Woo, I've just been to the toilet.

G Man, Tuesday, 12 August 2003 11:12 (twenty-two years ago)

You that excited by predictions league action, G Man?

Daniel (dancity), Tuesday, 12 August 2003 11:25 (twenty-two years ago)

I quite like a margin of victory points bonus. So if, say, Manchester City beat Charlton 3-1 on Sunday and you predicted 2-0 you get more than the simple result points. Not too complicated or unworkable... or even fanny dangling.

Daniel (dancity), Tuesday, 12 August 2003 11:27 (twenty-two years ago)

the only problem with that is the margin range for victory is always fairly limited - most common is victory by 1 goal then 2 then 3 then 4 etc. - but rarely do you get victories by a margin of 5 or more. so there's not much difference - what i'm saying is just keep it to getting points for predicting the winner tho not as many as predicting the winner AND exact score correctly.

stevem (blueski), Tuesday, 12 August 2003 11:32 (twenty-two years ago)

There'll be fewer spankings this year now West Ham have gone nationwide. Bless them.

G Man, Tuesday, 12 August 2003 11:49 (twenty-two years ago)

And now ***** ******* is in a different country to ******* ****'s sister as well...

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Tuesday, 12 August 2003 12:00 (twenty-two years ago)

stevem, the system sounds fine in the form you originally set out.

Daniel (dancity), Tuesday, 12 August 2003 13:21 (twenty-two years ago)

okay it sounds like most people are happy with the original suggestion, so lets be doing that

stevem (blueski), Tuesday, 12 August 2003 21:10 (twenty-two years ago)

sounds good
i think a bonus for predicting a player to score is a great idea, perhaps with something about not being allowed to pick the same player two weeks in a row to avoid everyone just picking van nistelroy...
