gab*neb in LA

i wasn't going to start my own thread, but what the he*l (me and my asterisks)

so not to be all gareth, or even Tracer Hand, but I will be vacationing in that angelic city from August 22 (Fri, noon) to 25 (Mon, mid-aft). I will be staying with my grandmother in Playa del Rey, and spending most of my time there or about with her. Any tourist suggestions (see below for my working list) would be most appreciated.

Of course, I'd also love to see/meet LA ILxors while I'm there, though only briefly may be possible. No obligation, duh; I haven't been here long enough to know y'all that well, and I know some people don't live in the city proper, but if some of you want to meet up, great. Disclaimer - I may not make firm plans until I arrive, though I'll have net access and a cell while I'm there. I'll generally be free in the evenings (say 9ish on), and perhaps on Sunday afternoon. I will have a car (though probably not Sunday afternoon, unless I rent one), but my almost-nonexistent and extremely rusty driving skills are such that it might take me some time to get anywhere. And I won't be drinking if I'm driving (night-time and/or freeways will be scary enough).

Stuff I have done in the past, some of which I might want to do again:
- been through most of the neighborhoods
- shopped Third St.
- wandered briefly around the canal in Venice
- been to the Getty long enough to look at the buildings, the view, a painting and an urn
- had lunch at a diner up on the hill on Sunset
- had coffee at night in Abbott-Kinney *swoon* (with older hippie girl who liked me but was lost to Prague, oh well)
- toured the Hollyhock and Ennis-Brown houses, and gazed up at the Neutra on the hill
- walked around the Gamble house
- visited the MOCA, the Norton Simon and the Southwest Museum
- stepped into Union Station and walked through the touristy part of the pueblo across the street (was that Olvera street?)
- visited UCLA, Cal-Tech (not sure abt USC but went to the museums next door when I was a kid)
- run through fred segal in 5 minutes, feared price tags
- wandered a bit of Melrose
- noshed La Brea Bakery

Stuff I would like to do (I clearly have not allowed myself enough time; I'll be back):
- be Nikki Sixx, or at least Riki Rachtman. I'm not going to pull off the fashion, duh, but I'd love to see the Whisky/Troubadour/Roxy/Rainbow/Cat Club (I want a t-shirt)/etc. (Gazzari's closed right?)
- tour the Schindler House
- eat the world's best taco
- have only-in-LA food (asian, presumably. though I can be unadventurous on that end and don't eat pork)
- have Silverlake hip rub off on me
- catch a wave (probably on the "boogieboard" - is there an alternate, technically accurate term? - that i haven't used since i was 9 or something - are there people who teach this to the ocean-challenged or is this just something you learn by doing?)
- eat a Pink's hot dog (with goth makeup on?)
- buy cool flipflops
- see the Frank Gehry house (y'know, the original) and the new concert hall
- hear a norteno band play at a backyard party (ok, that's a stretch)
- the Autry Museum
- the big exhibit on at LACMA
- JPL tour
- Paramount tour (do any of the Culver studios have tours now?)
- Santa Monica pier
- musso and frank's? the ivy? you tell me
- bar marmont? the one at the bev hills hotel? Skybar? you tell me

oh, another request. I'll be taking my grandmother to eat one night at Joe's in Santa Monica. Any recommendations for a similar place for another (potentially hypothetical) night, preferably in or near Santa Monica (but no Mexican or Asian)? My much-better-traveled parents recommend Lucques (though that's not really near Santa Monica). I was thinking maybe JiRaffe?

(also, the gabbneb LA style - how do i not look like the East Coaster that I totally am?)

gab*neb (gabbneb), Wednesday, 13 August 2003 05:20 (twenty-two years ago)

I've never been but my understanding is that Dodger Stadium really is a great ballpark

nnnh oh oh nnnh nnnh oh (James Blount), Wednesday, 13 August 2003 05:24 (twenty-two years ago)

where abouts in Playa del Rey do they live? i grew up in Westchester/Playa and my high school is right there on Manchester. my mom still lives in the neighborhood. there's nothing really that great about the neighborhood. i don't think they have In & Out burgers on the east coast do they? there's one on sepulveda just north of the airport. good shit. and across the street is Soundsations, a used cd spot.

- eat the world's best taco

i'm never gonna shut up about Tito's Tacos on Sepulveda and Washington. every single time i come home i go there as soon as i can. order a taco w/cheese and a bean and cheese burrito and you're set. god i miss that place.

JasonD (JasonD), Wednesday, 13 August 2003 05:33 (twenty-two years ago)

santa monica pier is g-h-e-t-t-o!! do not hang out there unless you're comfortable with carnies and gangsters.

JasonD (JasonD), Wednesday, 13 August 2003 05:36 (twenty-two years ago)

yeah, I read about that taco place. it's better than Gallegos? i've never had an In & Out burger (no, it's not on the East Coast that I know of). totally on the list.

my grandmother lives right off Manchester.

I once went to a Dodger game with my grandfather (who passed away) and the park was memorable. I'm trying to change my non-baseball-dude ways, but I think it would eat up too much time.

santa monica pier warning duly noted. it did look that way. but this makes me think of my favorite Ray Bradbury book - "Death is a Lonely Business" - which takes place in LA.

gabbneb (gabbneb), Wednesday, 13 August 2003 05:45 (twenty-two years ago)

do they have like Raymond Chandler tours out there?

nnnh oh oh nnnh nnnh oh (James Blount), Wednesday, 13 August 2003 05:52 (twenty-two years ago)

ya dude stay away from the pier. ill be around. hit me up.

chaki (chaki), Wednesday, 13 August 2003 05:55 (twenty-two years ago)

? jason's favorite record stores:

Amoeba - in hollywood. big enough to give you a 'holy shit'
Rhino - on westwood just north of Santa Monica
Aron's - Highland just north of Santa Monica
Vinyl Fetish - i guess they've moved. also in hollywood, it says down the street from amoeba

and a trip down Melrose will give you enough small, mostly vinyl shops (along with tons of boutique-y clothing and hipster stores) to keep you busy for at least half an afternoon. great people watching.

and there are a bunch of Penny Lanes (where i used to work for - before it turned into a porn store) and Moby Discs that are decent but not great

JasonD (JasonD), Wednesday, 13 August 2003 05:57 (twenty-two years ago)

why is there that random question mark in front of my post? spooky

JasonD (JasonD), Wednesday, 13 August 2003 05:58 (twenty-two years ago)

Not quite the Raymond Chandler tour, but this gets close.

Chris Barrus (Chris Barrus), Wednesday, 13 August 2003 06:03 (twenty-two years ago)

Tabren to thread.

Right. The big trio of industry showcase venues are the Roxy, Whiskey and the Troubadour. This is where you can see A&R scouts on a weeknight pretending not to be interested.

The Rainbow and Cocunut Teaszer are the 80s metal places.

They're all grungy but the Viper Room is a venue on the chic-er side of rawk. It is conveniently located near the Whiskey Bar at the

- eat the world's best taco

I second ?Jason's recommendation for Tico's.
- have only-in-LA food (asian, presumably. though I can be unadventurous on that end and don't eat pork)

NONONONO, forget about Asian, that's what Jean-Georges Vongerscherschen is for. Only-in-LA dining experiences are Roscoe's Chicken and Waffles and Swinger's (the 323 one, not the Santa Monica one) on Beverly at 2 a.m. The food at Swinger's is unremarkable, go for the scene.

Kate Mantolini is a good combo of food, scene (Heat was shot there in part) and late dining.

- have Silverlake hip rub off on me

Shop the one stretch on Vermont and see a show at Spaceland.

- eat a Pink's hot dog (with goth makeup on?)

Pink's is fun, as is the whole Fairfax district.

- musso and frank's? the ivy? you tell me

Ivy on Robertson is where the real fun is. Try the corn chowder, the berry crumble and if you have dough to blow and eat lobster, order the lobster grilled (not on the menu).

- bar marmont? the one at the bev hills hotel? Skybar? you tell me

You have to see the Chateau Marmont but the bar is pretty chill IIRC. The Sunset hotel bars are kind of what you'd expect. The bar at the Standard downtown is supposed to be the white hot bar du jour. Sunset Marquis is a classic rock glamor bar, but the only velvet rope-ish rock bar I know in LA.

Look for Angelyne.

felicity (felicity), Wednesday, 13 August 2003 15:46 (twenty-two years ago)

Somehow I missed this.

What felicity said.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Wednesday, 13 August 2003 16:22 (twenty-two years ago)

Also, I would be more enthusiastic about FAPing, but I'm not sure I'm going to be in town that weekend...

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Wednesday, 13 August 2003 16:51 (twenty-two years ago)

oh yeah, Roscoe's Chicken & Waffles........droooool.......

JasonD (JasonD), Wednesday, 13 August 2003 20:39 (twenty-two years ago)

dodger stadium is not that nice ("huh what d'ya know, even more concrete...") except for the view from the southern-ish part of the parking lot. orale, i used to live nearby too.

other only in la food are:
phillipe's (where the french dip was invented) - right by Union Station, where olvera meets the 101.
bob's big boy (burbank)
ginza sushiko (b.hills... but only if you wanna drop some $$$)

the ivy reminds me of cheezy guys sweating cologne in bad suits and this person i spent way too much time and energy with. does it turn into a nightclub after a certain hour, i swear this is the place i'm thinking of.

hey you might see me at fred segal that weekend!

also: take the angel's flight up to bunker hill, actually do that and also take the walking tour of downtown la, i love it, i do it every year.

gygax! (gygax!), Wednesday, 13 August 2003 21:29 (twenty-two years ago)

oh, another request.

Lucques is an exact replica of a Metapacking District restaurant in the 310 area of West Hollywood. Which is fine but why would you leave NY to do that? If you are staying in town to splash out you can go to L'Orangerie (LA's version of Daniel or Le Cirque) on La Cienega and send your mineral water back three times like in the Player. Jiraffe is perfectly fine but nothing special unless you need to be near Auntie Anne's Pretzels on the 3rd Street promenade. If you must stay on the West Side, why don't you go up to Geoffrey's on the PCH in Malibu for the spectacular view?

I like Fred Segal on Melrose but not the Santa Monica one. Boo, I had another thought in my head but it went away.

Anyway have a great time, gabbneb, I'm so excited for you.

felicity (felicity), Wednesday, 13 August 2003 21:33 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh I remember! There is a GREAT brunch restaurant on Doheny called La Conversation that brings you a little hot basket of mini brioches and croissants and serves steamed milk with your coffee. It is very pleasant sidewalk dining.

Anyway, you'll have fun, my only suggestion, since you seem to have spent most of your prior trips on the West Side, would be to try to explore neighborhoods east of Doheny such as Hancock Park (La Brea), Larchmont, Los Feliz, ok? It's like coming to NY and spending all your time in the West Village as opposed to the East.

felicity (felicity), Wednesday, 13 August 2003 21:38 (twenty-two years ago)

Gab*neb, don't worry the LA crew will find you. They found me, easily enough. The Lojack must have been on;>

Had a perfect spot to suggest, but just lost it. Sorry.

Have a grand time!

Nichole Graham (Nichole Graham), Wednesday, 13 August 2003 21:41 (twenty-two years ago)

thank you all for the recommendations!!

Lucques caveat noted. I'll be spending $, obv., but L'Orangerie would be a little much, and Malibu way too far. firm insistence on tap water would make me the New Yorker I guess.

what are the angel's flight and angelyne? can anyone confirm my too-subtle reference/question re: Pink's - it's the one in the "Free Fallin" video, yes?

gabbneb (gabbneb), Wednesday, 13 August 2003 21:49 (twenty-two years ago)

I think I'll be in Vegas that weekend 'cos it's my best friend's birthday, but if I'm in town, I'll totally take you surfing.

luna (luna.c), Wednesday, 13 August 2003 21:50 (twenty-two years ago)

Angelyne is the ultimate metacelebrity! It's very lucky if you see her. I bet her tour would be awesome!

felicity (felicity), Wednesday, 13 August 2003 22:09 (twenty-two years ago)

And if you want an ILE-in-LA experience, go to Club Underground Friday night and dance with the LA Mod Revivalists (mind the Vespas parked out front).

felicity (felicity), Wednesday, 13 August 2003 22:15 (twenty-two years ago)

pink's is in hollywood on melrose (not far from fred segal).

i think free falling was filmed in the valley, was pink's in it, i know not. pink's was however in mulholland drive.

angel's flight is near moca in downtown la, about a block east (?)... near pershing square.

more economical eateries i recommend joe's on abbott-kinney it's great and not over-priced (it's on abbott-kinney ha).

angelyne is the barbie doll looking bimbo most famous (?) for her picture in the moonlighting opening/intro. (x-post) she used to drive a bright pink corvette.

gygax! (gygax!), Wednesday, 13 August 2003 22:16 (twenty-two years ago)

i forget... what's the name of that fusion-y place near abbott-kinney on ocean/pacific/whatever... it's like right on the border of where venice/santa monica meet.

gygax! (gygax!), Wednesday, 13 August 2003 22:17 (twenty-two years ago)

Angel's Flight has been closed for about two years since it killed a guy, but you can still look at it (the cars are gone). At the top is California Plaza, where they have the free Grand Performances concerts.

nickn (nickn), Wednesday, 13 August 2003 23:01 (twenty-two years ago)

well I could rub some Silverlake hip onto you, just email me when you get here. Prepare to drink.

Orbit (Orbit), Thursday, 14 August 2003 03:49 (twenty-two years ago)

i forget... what's the name of that fusion-y place near abbott-kinney on ocean/pacific/whatever... it's like right on the border of where venice/santa monica meet.

Are you talking about Chaya Venice (as opposed to Chaya Beverly Hills near Robertson)?

I guess Hal's (a time-honored Venice art gallery scene restaurant) might fit gab's description, although all these restaurants have the same Chilean Sea Bass, *-Encrusted Salmon and 1/2 Roasted Chicken, admit it. Sea Bass is the Seared Tuna of the Aughts.

Actually, another only-in-LA food I miss is the fried fish and french fries at Versailles, a wonderful cheap and yummy Cuban restaurant in Palms. I don't know what they do to their fish but it is yum.

felicity (felicity), Thursday, 14 August 2003 12:46 (twenty-two years ago)

Actually, you know what restaurant might be nice for Grandma (although not near Santa Monica or Venice)? The Little Door in West Hollywood.

felicity (felicity), Thursday, 14 August 2003 12:59 (twenty-two years ago)

yes Chaya (haha there's one in downtown SF too)

gygax! (gygax!), Thursday, 14 August 2003 14:04 (twenty-two years ago)

oh yeah, Versailles........droooool.......

JasonD (JasonD), Thursday, 14 August 2003 15:30 (twenty-two years ago)

I think I'm going to have Felicity do my personal calendar from now on. Where am I going Friday night?

The only new nice places I have to add are A.O.C. on Third which is great if grandma can deal with Tapas, and Opaline and M on Beverly.

Also, if I'm in town, you should come by and we'll have a coffee at The King's Road Cafe and then walk up to the Schindler House.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Thursday, 14 August 2003 16:16 (twenty-two years ago)

Also, it's a great time of year for LA sunsets, this one from my block yesterday:

Spencer's sunset is sickeningly gorgeous. One more reason to live here!

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 14 August 2003 21:25 (twenty-two years ago)

Chaki, the Valley is not exactly *ghetto* but I won't flog you on that. We should all get together and show them some LA fapping, imho.

Orbit (Orbit), Friday, 15 August 2003 06:02 (twenty-two years ago)

the valley is indeed ghetto, i'm scared up there without my credit card! and if "silverlake hip" = those scensters that i was eating nxt to in fred 62's in los feliz on monday, then i'm quite glad none rubbed off on me. but hey if you're in town give me a shoutout too, ii'm down for that chandleresque tour that was linked up there, since that's m'ah hood!!

Vic (Vic), Friday, 15 August 2003 07:39 (twenty-two years ago)

have you ever been to sun valley or van nuys!?!

chaki (chaki), Saturday, 16 August 2003 02:29 (twenty-two years ago)

Yes, I have. I get my car fixed in Sun Valley. Those places are not ghetto. I can *take* you to ghetto if you want.

Orbit (Orbit), Saturday, 16 August 2003 06:44 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm on pre-vacation vacation and not on ILX much until mid-next week, but thanks all for the continued recommendations/offers!

gabbneb (gabbneb), Sunday, 17 August 2003 14:20 (twenty-two years ago)

revive!

so that Silverlake street fair on Sunday sounds cool. If possible, I'd like to check out the Dandy Warhols on Sunday night, though I might make it only for the end. Anyone up for post-show drink/coffee at Spaceland/Tsunami/other? It's possible I'll also be around there and available earlier in the day, but that's even more tbd.

Anyone know anything about 5 Dudley, a restaurant in Venice (right near Joe's)? It sounds like exactly my kind of place.

gabbneb (gabbneb), Thursday, 21 August 2003 14:01 (twenty-two years ago)

haha, did you originally mean Joe's in Venice? I hadn't heard of Joe's in SaMo (that's why I rec'd the one in Venice).

but no I haven't heard of 5 Dudley.

gygax! (gygax!), Thursday, 21 August 2003 14:24 (twenty-two years ago)

two years pass...
Revive.

gabbneb (gabbneb), Thursday, 15 September 2005 02:01 (twenty years ago)

When are yer out here?

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 15 September 2005 02:03 (twenty years ago)

Anticipatorily, 9/22 or 23 to somewhere between 26 and 28. Hoping for a free day on the Monday or Tuesday devoted to East Side/Hollywood shopping/looking (and a Runyon Canyon walk?). Possibly a weekend night after 9 or so, though my readiness to venture far from the marina area at night on my own is to be decided. Maybe I will try this newfangled electric streetcar system you have.

gabbneb (gabbneb), Thursday, 15 September 2005 02:18 (twenty years ago)

also, HI DERE Emerald City and SF?

gabbneb (gabbneb), Thursday, 15 September 2005 02:21 (twenty years ago)

Hmm, I'll be up in LA for a show on the 23rd...FAP, perhaps?

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 15 September 2005 02:22 (twenty years ago)

FAP would be great. Won't be certain about my timing for a few days, but 23rd eve is possible.

gabbneb (gabbneb), Thursday, 15 September 2005 02:27 (twenty years ago)

Try to keep it open and I will check with the person I'm going up with.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 15 September 2005 02:30 (twenty years ago)

cool

SFO - 9/27-30?
SEA - 9/30-10/5?

gabbneb (gabbneb), Thursday, 15 September 2005 02:41 (twenty years ago)

I'll be at a party in Vancouver that weekend in between, most likely, but around those days, I'll be around!

donut Get Behind Me Carbon Dioxide (donut), Thursday, 15 September 2005 05:03 (twenty years ago)

in SEA, eve of 10/2 probably best for me

gabbneb (gabbneb), Thursday, 15 September 2005 05:28 (twenty years ago)

Diplo with DJ Marlboro (Baile Funk king from Rio) at the Conga Room on 10/26 - I will be there!

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Thursday, 15 September 2005 06:12 (twenty years ago)

Hmm, I'm getting back from Vancouver that evening (10/2) by train...

I'll probably be wanting to get some sleep. :-/ oh well.

donut Get Behind Me Carbon Dioxide (donut), Thursday, 15 September 2005 06:54 (twenty years ago)

Also, Sunday nights in Seattle are kinda dead.. not much open.

gabbneb (gabbneb), Thursday, 15 September 2005 20:46 (twenty years ago)

ok, to make it official - 9/22-27 (9/27-10/2 SEA). eve of 9/23 more likely to be a go.

gabbneb (gabbneb), Friday, 16 September 2005 02:09 (twenty years ago)

Anything going on Friday night, then? I'm tentatively planning on browsing at Amoeba early eveningish, though hunger might lead me into the metro and towards Vermont.

gabbneb (gabbneb), Wednesday, 21 September 2005 12:24 (twenty years ago)

Don't be ridiculous, you can't *not* come to SF!

anyone going to be in Kings Rd, Silverlake, Amoeba or Runyon today?

In spirit.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Sunday, 25 September 2005 16:46 (twenty years ago)

I can be at the Kings Road Cafe.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Sunday, 25 September 2005 18:01 (twenty years ago)

Gabbneb I am horribly ill with a cold/sinus infection, otherwise I'd love to show you my favorite places in Silverlake. I hope you make it to Tiki Ti (just east of where Hollywood Blvd and Sunset Blvd meet, on the north side of the street, next to KCET studios) for the perfect Tiki drink and at least got to hit LACMA if you haven't before.

Have fun at Amoeba and wherever else you roam!
