i've been stopping off at wing lee loi on the way home for probbly 20 years!!

it is run by difft people now though, and no longer does polynesian food: when i first went it was very special

mark s (mark s), Wednesday, 13 August 2003 07:48 (twenty-two years ago)

I've been using Siew May in Dawlish since I was a nipper and don't imagine I'll stop til I move away.

Nick Southall (Nick Southall), Wednesday, 13 August 2003 07:55 (twenty-two years ago)

The Munal Tandoori, a Nepalese place next to my house, first got my patronage before I moved in, but even so we're only talking 3 and a half years.

The lamented Golden Carp in Wandsworth would have still been enjoying my custom after 15 or so years if it hadn't been a completely different pizza place last time I wanted fish and chips. Sigh.

Mark C (Mark C), Wednesday, 13 August 2003 07:55 (twenty-two years ago)

polynesian??? wow, tell me more.

Currently not that long really especially as the really good Chinese in Walthamstow doesn't deliver. The new Vietnamese place is ace though.

chris (chris), Wednesday, 13 August 2003 07:56 (twenty-two years ago)

we use the same fish & chip shop, which also sells chinese food, all of the time. it's great. but we do change other takeaways. we are soon to move to a little village that has 1 takeaway place that sells pizza & indian, mmm should be fab!! :-/

Pinkpanther (Pinkpanther), Wednesday, 13 August 2003 07:59 (twenty-two years ago)

sadly i can't remember any of the names of the polynesian dishes apart from chicken zingara — which i always always had

(haha it appears via the magic of google there is nothing especially polynesian about it either!!)

mark s (mark s), Wednesday, 13 August 2003 08:00 (twenty-two years ago)

Am I the only one who thought this thread was about buying too much food and eating salted chilli squid or some gunge all week for breakfast?

I have been going to the same chinese restaurant (which recently began doing take-away) with my parents for about 13 years maybe. It's really a fantastic chinese, I've never had one so good anywhere else actually. It sets the standards a bit too high though I guess, salted chilli dishes are never quite as good anywhere else, that's usually my favourite.

Even things like the standard of rice and stuff is never as good elsewhere, which makes a massive difference, cheap rice is horrible.

My local chipper I've also been using for 12 or 13 years, it's very good though always crowded since it's the only one in a fairly big town. Adam Clayton said he has never had a burger as good all over the world. I kind of think that is nonsense though, he's probably never eaten a burger since he left.

There's a nice place in Dublin called Mongolian Barbecue or something where you get all you can eat food quite cheaply, I'm not sure if it's still open though.

Ronan (Ronan), Wednesday, 13 August 2003 08:06 (twenty-two years ago)

I have a small takeaway attention span, to be frank. Especially in Northampton, it's a damn miracle if any Chinese takeaway owner can keep hold of his shop before he gambles the damn thing away in a poker tournament.

Anyway, quite possibly Richard's Takeaway down St Leonard's Road. Owned by a bunch of guys from Hong Kong, the best kebab outside the town centre, decent fries, great burgers, and some comedy banter. What else do you need?

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Wednesday, 13 August 2003 08:12 (twenty-two years ago)

I've been going to Bardsley's in Brighton for about 15 years on and off (the off being times when I wasn't actually living in Brighton.)

Archel (Archel), Wednesday, 13 August 2003 08:23 (twenty-two years ago)

I always go to the same restaurant in Chinatown because I think it's the only one I've not been thrown out of. We've walked in there at 3am and they've found us a table :-)

Other than that, our local Chinese / Thai (Aroma Express) is excellent and I've been using it for about four years.

Hippo Pizza was the best pizza takeaway too, but it closed down. Admittedly the name didn't make it sound very slimming.

j0e (j0e), Wednesday, 13 August 2003 08:29 (twenty-two years ago)

Dom, surely you're a fan of The Millenium Kebab Saloon? If only for the name... Up All Night had a fantastic array of rats on the garden patch outside, and Flames used to do outrageous chilli sauce that caused my mate James to exclaim one evening that he was dying of "facial fire".

Nick Southall (Nick Southall), Wednesday, 13 August 2003 08:30 (twenty-two years ago)

I have been going to Tommy's in LA for over 25 years now.

Chris Barrus (Chris Barrus), Wednesday, 13 August 2003 08:45 (twenty-two years ago)

And what does Tommy's sell Chris?

Pinkpanther (Pinkpanther), Wednesday, 13 August 2003 08:46 (twenty-two years ago)

I've been using Latin Quarter Pizza in Lancaster since 1992. Best pizzas in the world. Obv, I don't get there as much nowadays seeing as I'm in London.

Dave B (daveb), Wednesday, 13 August 2003 08:54 (twenty-two years ago)

Well, if we're talking town centre Nick... has anyone ever ordered a kebab from Millennium? I mean, I'm a regular there, because of their awesome two pizzas for the price of one deal. I'd feel a bit awkward getting a kebab from there, especially when there'...

Kebab King. The king of takeaways. Donner kebab in naan (the proper way, so you don't end up dropping half of it on the damn way home) £4. Student discount as well. They do delivery as well.

There's also Up All Night as you say. Best chosen for the "BJ Special", a burger with half a butcher's inside it. Also, they do a decent steak kebab. They also have "banter" with the owner's.

I've never bothered with Flames, even though it's been there... god knows. 15 years? I got a can of coke from there once when I was about six sheets, but apart from that...

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Wednesday, 13 August 2003 08:55 (twenty-two years ago)

I've been using Latin Quarter Pizza in Lancaster since 1992. Best pizzas in the world.

How can you not order from Italian Job, if only to wake up the following morning to see exactly how much grease from the pizza has congealed onto the box. You could use it as Polyfilla.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Wednesday, 13 August 2003 08:56 (twenty-two years ago)

i have been using peppers and spice on kingsland road for about 8 years, viet hoa for about the same (and you can eat in there, too)

Dave Stelfox (Dave Stelfox), Wednesday, 13 August 2003 08:57 (twenty-two years ago)

where is viet hoa dave?

mark s (mark s), Wednesday, 13 August 2003 09:00 (twenty-two years ago)

on kingsland road right don the bottom, in the heart of london's fashionable shoreditch...

Dave Stelfox (Dave Stelfox), Wednesday, 13 August 2003 09:00 (twenty-two years ago)

There's a fanbollockingtastic new pizza place in Stoke Newington that delivers too. Last time the pizza motorbloke arrived an hour early and when I buzzed him up, he didn't move. I walked downstairs and let him in and he said, "no speakey English" and undercharged me by £3.

It's the little things.

G Man, Wednesday, 13 August 2003 09:03 (twenty-two years ago)

where is viet hoa dave?

This question had SO MUCH potential.

Nick Southall (Nick Southall), Wednesday, 13 August 2003 09:05 (twenty-two years ago)

however i have discovered the holy grail of kebab shops near me and believe i will be returning there again and again - proper turkish barbecue style (they don't do those filthy doner things at all, thank god as i've not eaten one in about 14 years and have no plans on starting again). a kebab there = two big skewers of lamb, on-the-bone chicken or really good, minty kofte, a walloping great chunk of flatbread, and flat-leaf parsley, tomato and chilli salad all for the grand total of £3!

Dave Stelfox (Dave Stelfox), Wednesday, 13 August 2003 09:07 (twenty-two years ago)

Fuck me, get them to franchise to Dawlish.

Nick Southall (Nick Southall), Wednesday, 13 August 2003 09:09 (twenty-two years ago)

it's literally about 20 footsteps from my front door!

Dave Stelfox (Dave Stelfox), Wednesday, 13 August 2003 09:17 (twenty-two years ago)

oh right, near the railway bridge - i knew i'd been but i couldn't remember where!!

the guy who runs the kebab shop round the corner USED to work in the kebab shop i first went to when i arrived in london, so i've known him for pretty much 20 years also, and in a way this nearly counts

he was a kid back then, now he sports a magnificent ewing-style beard and an amusing line in jaded commentary on life in general — i am very fond of him, though i don't know his name

there are times when only a genuinely filthy doner will do :(

mark s (mark s), Wednesday, 13 August 2003 09:17 (twenty-two years ago)

you have to try the place near me mark - come round for a kebab!!!

Dave Stelfox (Dave Stelfox), Wednesday, 13 August 2003 09:20 (twenty-two years ago)

the best falafels in Dublin are from Athena on Dame Street. They opened about 4 months ago and have become my most frequented takeaway. Last time I was in there they'd run out of falafels and it was only 9 o'clock - they're that good.

rener (rener), Wednesday, 13 August 2003 09:21 (twenty-two years ago)

charles' in cheltenham (always called charlie's by everyone, despite it not being it's name) was/is an absolute classic, i think we used to get big portions because we looked so underfed when we were students and the matriarch took pity on us, really nice veggie burgers too (7 years).

kebab kid (cowley rd) in oxford does great chicken donner naan and the chicken is tikka-ed which makes it much nicer (2 and a bit years)

i also have only recently discovered the joys of non-donner kebabs, planet kebab at archway does a top notch lamb shish, it's worth going for the large one (£4) over the small one (£3) as you get twice as much MEAT.

CarsmileSteve (CarsmileSteve), Wednesday, 13 August 2003 09:23 (twenty-two years ago)

email me dave, we must meet up soon!!

mark s (mark s), Wednesday, 13 August 2003 09:25 (twenty-two years ago)

I've been going to the Bombay Express in Southsea, on-and-off, for the past 8 or 9 years. Apart from swapping its pink awning for a big pink illuminated sign, it hasn't changed. Tasty food, big portions and v. v. cheap.

robster (robster), Wednesday, 13 August 2003 09:29 (twenty-two years ago)

i've probably walked past you a few times now mark, but i'm free(ish) most of next week so if you fancy a pint or two - will drop you a note...

Dave Stelfox (Dave Stelfox), Wednesday, 13 August 2003 09:30 (twenty-two years ago)

Must check that Rener, I presume Zaytun in Temple Bar in Dublin isn't any great secret, took Tim H along when he was over recently, it's always really nice and not bad value either. So near the Kitchen back in the day too.

Ronan (Ronan), Wednesday, 13 August 2003 09:39 (twenty-two years ago)

Fot those who live in Dublin, is the Well Fed Cafe still going? A veggie delight it were.

G Man, Wednesday, 13 August 2003 09:48 (twenty-two years ago)

Since 1995:

Top Nosh, best felafel for a hangover and they also do a roaring trade in marinated meat or chicken escalope in pitta.

Mayva: Chinese delivery-only takeaway, big portions, good quality.

Royal Inn: for the salt and chili ribs only. But I notice they've probably changed chefs because the're not as spicy now, grr.

There are no good pizza delivery places in this traditionally Italian neighbourhood of London.

suzy (suzy), Wednesday, 13 August 2003 09:58 (twenty-two years ago)

That's because they can't afford the rent there due to the high amount of trustafarians pushing the prices up.

chris (chris), Wednesday, 13 August 2003 10:06 (twenty-two years ago)

i can soon see sections of hackney trading in mutton patties and jerk chicken for rocket salad and polenta...

Dave Stelfox (Dave Stelfox), Wednesday, 13 August 2003 10:13 (twenty-two years ago)

Slightly off topic but do any of you go to that Italian restaurant San Danielle in North London, it's near Highbury. I went there once or twice in the past and it's so good, Ireland is full of Italian restaurants which are basically dominoes with a thin base, and the pasta is barely better than what you make yourself, but this place was absolutely fantastic.

Arsene Wenger is a frequent visitor apparently.

Ronan (Ronan), Wednesday, 13 August 2003 10:15 (twenty-two years ago)

My first visit to Hackney was pretty eye-opening, it must have the greatest kebab diversity in all of London. When I lived in London, without doubt my favourite takeaway was the Sunderbahn tandori on Blackstock Road. 200 yards from the flat and the best curry I've ever tasted. Which is high praise coming from a Midlander.

Nathan W (Nathan Webb), Wednesday, 13 August 2003 11:09 (twenty-two years ago)

planet kebab at archway does a top notch lamb shish,
This is the third recommendation I've heard for this place. Do the tastebuds react differently to kebabs when one is drunk and waiting for the bus at Archway, or must I get down to archway for this super-kebab?

marianna, Wednesday, 13 August 2003 11:11 (twenty-two years ago)

That's because they can't afford the rent there due to the high amount of trustafarians pushing the prices up.

Actually, that's not true. All the places I mentioned are ancient and don't appear to be going out of business anytime soon. One of the biggest property owners in this area is the Italian Catholic parish and the family businesses in that catchment appear to be rent-controlled. Camden Council own the rest of the shop frontage locally. There's a pizza restaurant just across the street that should be a lot better than it is, which is why I wrote what I did.

suzy (suzy), Wednesday, 13 August 2003 11:24 (twenty-two years ago)

We've been ordering from China Panda since we've been in Richmond, so about 2 1/2 years. They have a full vegetarian menu with things like Mock Sesame Chicken and Mock Broccili Beef. At our current apartment, it's like 2 blocks away. I think they just walk the deliveries over.

NA (Nick A.), Wednesday, 13 August 2003 11:28 (twenty-two years ago)

Fot those who live in Dublin, is the Well Fed Cafe still going? A veggie delight it were.

sadly no, it closed down a couple of years ago. There was always a slight air of ramshackleness about the place, so it wasn't a huge surprise that it died once Dublin started becoming prosperous and demanding waiter service and "paninis".

rener (rener), Wednesday, 13 August 2003 11:52 (twenty-two years ago)

And what does Tommy's sell Chris?

I'm not Chris but: burgers. However, these are no ordinary burgers.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 13 August 2003 12:28 (twenty-two years ago)

Er, I thought this thread was about how long you've eaten continuously from the same take out box in yr fridge. (me, since sat.)

Texas Sam (thatgirl), Wednesday, 13 August 2003 21:48 (twenty-two years ago)

Why Ned, are they infact hotdogs? heh heh!

mmmmmmmm take out! i think one might be called for tonight, purely for celebratory reasons you understand!!!! ;-)

Pinkpanther (Pinkpanther), Thursday, 14 August 2003 12:46 (twenty-two years ago)

I never get takeaway! If I am going to bother with eating at a restaurant, I just eat it there so I don't have to bring home a mess.

Mandee, Thursday, 14 August 2003 13:49 (twenty-two years ago)

But if you bring it home you can get the accompanying beer/soda/etc at supermarket prices rather than takeaway prices. Plus watch TV, listen to music etc. I usually take it home.
