The silver can containing Williams' head resembles a lobster pot and is marked in black

THAT's something you don't read everyday.

i wonder if they rubbed between teds eyes to put him to sleep first.

This reminds me, I once went to a Ripley's Believe It or Not Museum in Great Yarmouth (UK) some years ago, and I was browsing the stacks of books on fortean phenomena on a table in the gift shop when I suddenly realised that the table's centrepiece was what appeared to be a model of an old man's severed head encased in plastic (that had been made to look like ice). It gave me a quite a nasty turn.

This reminds me, anybody want to help me procure Rollie Fingers's head?
AFTER he's dead of course.

Wanna bet that Alcor wouldn't have been interested in the project, if Williams hadn't been famous?

I'm gonna be so sad when I read the Sports Illustrated on this, whenever it frickin gets here.

i'll bet alcor would've taken him if he wasn't famous. they'll take anyone who puts up the cake. john henry did put up $25,000 of the $136,000 needed to freeze dry his pop.

the most ghoulish thing about this (in my little mind) was john henry trying to convince his half-sister to sign onto this by saying he was going to sell their father's DNA! his half-sister quotes jh as saying "wouldn't it be neat to sell dads DNA? People would pay top dollar to have little ted williams's running around."

and then there's the fact that 8 of his DNA samples are missing. hellllll-ooooooooo cloning lab!

a sad, sad, fate for a veteran of two wars.

Weird thread, I know...Something I wasn't aware of: for a 162-game stretch, Tony Gwynn once hit over .400.

nothing new here, just appreciating ted williams. for some reason i always forget about his losing the better part of two seasons to the korean war (in addition to the 3 prime years he lost to WWII)

it's not so crazy to assume that he would have put up at least 10 WAR in each of his lost 1943-45 seasons.

1941 fWAR: 11.0
1942: 11.6
...
1946: 11.8
1947: 10.5

and then a bit later on, during his mostly lost 1952-53 seasons, i'd guess he would have had 7+ WAR for both seasons, conservatively, given that when he came back in '54 he had 8.4 WAR in only 117 games, and then another 7.1 WAR in just 98 games in '55! that's just amazing.

his career OBP was .482! holy shit!

I thought that the odd tale of Ted William's frozen head could make an interesting science fiction story about cloning. I think I was re-reading Dune when it happened and I imaged some type of Ted Williams ghola that would somehow remember he was "Ted Williams".

earlnash, Monday, 23 April 2018 21:43 (seven years ago)

yeah i've seen stats from some of those dudes who lost time to the war, DiMaggio was another guy. He missed his age 28, 29, and 30 seasons completely to WWII service. Greenberg, too. In May 1941 he left to go serve, and returned to play less than half a season in 1945. When he left he was at his peak, and when he came back he had one great season left in the tank and that was it. Retired after 1947.

omar little, Monday, 23 April 2018 22:08 (seven years ago)

I've been fascinated with Williams' '52 and (especially) '53 seasons ever since I got my first MacMillan encyclopedia in '74. His slash stats were almost identical for the two seasons, one being 12 AB and the other 110: basically .400/.500/.900 for both.
