Classic or Dud?

1: Does he actually pronounce his name that way, or is it just a critical mass of mispronunciation which he is too polite correct?
2: Was he actually the military press officer in charge of denying that the My Lai massacre had taken place? (Back in the days when it was still being referred to as "Pinkville")

It seems he pronounces his name that way deliberately, but I cannot for the life of me figure out why. Does he have an appreciation for punctuation and want to show solidarity with the semi-colon and colon by pronouncing his name this way?

From Disinformation.com : The My Lai massacre. On March 16, 1968, US soldiers from the Americal Division slaughtered 347 civilians--primarily old men, women, children, and babies--in the Vietnamese village of My Lai 4 (pronounced, very appropriately, as "me lie"). The grunts also engaged in torture and rape of the villagers. Around six months later, a soldier in the 11th Light Infantry Brigade--known among the men as "the Butcher's Brigade"--wrote a letter telling of widespread killing and torturing of Vietnamese civilians by entire units of the US military (he did not specifically refer to My Lai). The letter was sent to the general in charge of 'Nam and trickled down the chain of command to Major Colin Powell, a deputy assistant chief of staff at the Americal Division, who was charged with investigating the matter and formulating a response. After a desultory check--which consisted mainly of investigating the soldier who wrote the letter, rather than his allegations--Powell reported that everything was hunkey-dory. There may be some "isolated incidents" by individual bad seeds, but there were no widespread atrocities. He wrote: "In direct refutation of this portrayal is the fact that relations between Americal soldiers and the Vietnamese people are excellent." The matter was closed. To this day, we might not know about the carnage at My Lai if it hadn't been for another solider who later wisely sent a letter to his Congressman. (Twenty-five years later Powell gave an interview in which he not only failed to condemn the massacre but seemed to excuse it.)

From ABCnews.com: He (Powell) was faulted in some corners for not using his position as custodian of the operational journals of the Americal Division in March 1968 in Vietnam to report the massacre at My Lai, where American troops were accused of killing 500 unarmed Vietnamese civilians in March 1968. The massacre was eventually brought to light. Powell points out he was not with the division at the time of the massacre and cooperated with the inspector general’s staff investigator, who asked him to produce the journal for the date of the massacre.

Tracer -- I'm going to do you the favor of pointing out that that's a Chris Rock bit, before someone comes along and gets really, really annoyed with you.

I've never much cared for Colin Powell, but for those of us who don't want to see us blowing up folks indiscriminately (like myself), he might be the closest thing to the voice of reason within the White House right now.
