Meeting brand new people for the second time

Every time someone I meet introduces themselves with something to the effect of:

"I don't suppose you remember me"

they are invariably right and I always vigorously deny it.

How common / bad is that?

brand new people = babies?

With work, it's usually the opposite for me. I remember meeting these people several times before but their eyes are completely blank as they shake my hand and say, "Nice to meet you, Sarah!"

The last wedding I was at, this extremely cute girl who was cousin of the bride introduced herself, even though we had sat next to each other for Thanksgiving dinner a few years ago.

:(

nothing to be ashamed of. just say that you were drunk the first time. the circumstances do not matter; funeral, bris, AA meeting. You were drunk.

works for me. I think.

I used to be very bad at this - when I was a biggish person within the tiny pond of comic books in the UK I met hundreds of fans and aspiring writers and artists, and I would struggle to remember most of them a year later. I think they might have known a handful of people at a convention, and I would know literally a couple of hundred - I couldn't remember everyone I'd met for three minutes last year. Still, I always felt guilty.

Well, a few years can be considered a long time, by some people. What matters now is: did you jump in and intro yourself again? She might have been impressed.

Actually she went back to the dance floor and I went off to a little clearing to smoke a joint with her older brother and the sister of the bride.

hey martin, what comix did you write, anyway?

Kingfish (Kingfish), Wednesday, 13 August 2003 19:40 (twenty-two years ago)

i also hate meeting people around my age because we all have the same names. it was like a law in the mid 70's to choose a name for your child from the approved list of 10 names-chris, brian, nick, john, jason, sarah, jessica, emily, julie, and jenny. which is why i will now be known as jdflkasrtoiaeh.

I didn't write comics at all - I edited some UK ones and wrote about them. This was in the '80s, a very long time ago now.

I'm with kingfish. "I was drunk"

luna (luna.c), Wednesday, 13 August 2003 20:35 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm hopeless at this. I'm usually a bit shy and nervous when I meet someone so I don't actually hear their name when they're introduced. I'm also crap with faces.

Mark C (Mark C), Wednesday, 13 August 2003 20:57 (twenty-two years ago)

Actually, I usually just admit it. "I'm sorry, I really don't remember. You probably met one of my other personalities, what was your name again?"

luna (luna.c), Wednesday, 13 August 2003 21:11 (twenty-two years ago)

At least, that will keep them laughing long enough to listen
