Mentalism

Dave B (daveb), Wednesday, 13 August 2003 22:08 (twenty-two years ago)

'There are 3290 candles'.

There are 3290 people who are demonstrably a danger to themselves and others. I weep for the future.

Dave B (daveb), Wednesday, 13 August 2003 22:11 (twenty-two years ago)

why is people mourning the death of an actress a sign the world's gone mad?

nnnh oh oh nnnh nnnh oh (James Blount), Wednesday, 13 August 2003 22:13 (twenty-two years ago)

are all the people who posted to the Gregory Hines RIP thread a danger to themselves and others?

i'm all ready to superimpose dave b's head onto the guy in that pic

stevem (blueski), Wednesday, 13 August 2003 22:15 (twenty-two years ago)

lapdance island is admittedly insane

nnnh oh oh nnnh nnnh oh (James Blount), Wednesday, 13 August 2003 22:16 (twenty-two years ago)

though it's not that different from temptation island is it?

nnnh oh oh nnnh nnnh oh (James Blount), Wednesday, 13 August 2003 22:17 (twenty-two years ago)

Dave, yeah, I have to say that while the interweb is still crawling w/ creepyass kidfiddlers, survivalists, gun nuts, conspiracy theorists, neo-nazis etc., I'm not going to be so worried abt a bunch of weepy Holby City fans wanting to light their imaginary candles

Andrew L (Andrew L), Wednesday, 13 August 2003 22:19 (twenty-two years ago)

there was another thread about the 'candles for laura' thing

stevem (blueski), Wednesday, 13 August 2003 22:29 (twenty-two years ago)

Exacerlee. It's exactly what a bunch of Nathan Barleys would come up with in a crap coke-fuelled 'brain' storm about how to up the ante. In the non-perfect world, this is a hoax, or Chris Morris has infiltrated the E4 team and is doing the best Brass Eye ever.

As for the Candles for Laura - It's Diana-lite. Angel? God wanted you in heaven? Puhlease. It's a form of psychosis for people to want to insert themselves into a narrative that isn't anything to do with them aside from a celeb related intimacy straight from the pages of Heat or Hello. Admittedly, there are worse things out there. Much more worse. But for the life of me I cannot get my head around why anyone would be compelled to do such a thing. But as you've probably guessed, I wanted to emigrate around the time of Diana madness.

Apologies for corn with candles for Laura (in Popbitch, rather than Spanking thread)

Dave B (daveb), Wednesday, 13 August 2003 22:35 (twenty-two years ago)

um, so how was the Candles for Laura thing any different from the Gregory Hines RIP thread? I don't find mourning a dead actress nearly as big an indicator of what a sick sad world it is as someone starting a thread mocking people's mourning.

nnnh oh oh nnnh nnnh oh (James Blount), Wednesday, 13 August 2003 22:40 (twenty-two years ago)

there are some major differences.

RJG (RJG), Wednesday, 13 August 2003 22:42 (twenty-two years ago)

what? cuz haha we're smarter than those people?

nnnh oh oh nnnh nnnh oh (James Blount), Wednesday, 13 August 2003 22:43 (twenty-two years ago)

I mean, I still haven't seen why people mourning someone's death is so disgusting or hilarious

nnnh oh oh nnnh nnnh oh (James Blount), Wednesday, 13 August 2003 22:44 (twenty-two years ago)

GH had appeared in lots of things [=people 'knew' him better], GH died of cancer.

RJG (RJG), Wednesday, 13 August 2003 22:47 (twenty-two years ago)

haha - is that really the difference?

nnnh oh oh nnnh nnnh oh (James Blount), Wednesday, 13 August 2003 22:49 (twenty-two years ago)

yeah.

RJG (RJG), Wednesday, 13 August 2003 22:49 (twenty-two years ago)

for future reference: how famous does someone have to be before it's ok to mourn them? and what are the approved causes of death?

nnnh oh oh nnnh nnnh oh (James Blount), Wednesday, 13 August 2003 22:50 (twenty-two years ago)

haha, react MORE NOW.

GH is/was not an angel.

RJG (RJG), Wednesday, 13 August 2003 22:51 (twenty-two years ago)

I don't know who this woman is, but she's got nothing on Phumphuang.

Tep (ktepi), Wednesday, 13 August 2003 22:53 (twenty-two years ago)

I've said neither. It's not disgusting. It's not hilarious. It's...worrying to me. It's also a tad extreme to say that this thread is part of making this sick, sad world sadder and sicker. On a simple level, I think public displays of grief for people who have a connection with you solely through the end of a TV cable is worrying.

Dave B (daveb), Wednesday, 13 August 2003 22:55 (twenty-two years ago)

It's as old as television itself, though, and people have done it with every kind of celebrity we've yet invented. So far, civilization's still here.

Tep (ktepi), Wednesday, 13 August 2003 22:56 (twenty-two years ago)

rudolph valentino

nnnh oh oh nnnh nnnh oh (James Blount), Wednesday, 13 August 2003 22:57 (twenty-two years ago)

abraham lincoln

nnnh oh oh nnnh nnnh oh (James Blount), Wednesday, 13 August 2003 22:57 (twenty-two years ago)

I know. It was same with Valentino. Civilisation is still here, but Lapdance Island could be the undoing of that. And it is mentalist behaviour, old or new. IMO obv.

Dave B (daveb), Wednesday, 13 August 2003 22:58 (twenty-two years ago)

Lincoln is so totally a different kettle of fish.

Dave B (daveb), Wednesday, 13 August 2003 22:59 (twenty-two years ago)

again: valentino had been around for a long time and had done a lot of things. and abraham lincoln did a bit, too.

these are stupid comparisons.

all it is: the candles thing is over the top or not over the top enough.

RJG (RJG), Wednesday, 13 August 2003 23:01 (twenty-two years ago)

valentino had been around for a long time and had done a lot of things.

Well, there's always Jesus. He hadn't been well-known for more than a year or three, depending on which Gospel you like, and judging from the website, he was less famous than Laura. Didn't actually do anything other than some street performances here and there.

Don't worry, I'm being deliberately flip :) Do not respond as though I were being serious.

Tep (ktepi), Wednesday, 13 August 2003 23:03 (twenty-two years ago)

haha - valentino did alot of things?

nnnh oh oh nnnh nnnh oh (James Blount), Wednesday, 13 August 2003 23:04 (twenty-two years ago)

you bastard.

both of you.

RJG (RJG), Wednesday, 13 August 2003 23:04 (twenty-two years ago)

RV was an actual personality.

the thousands of people e-lighting e-candles for the girl, do you think many of them have a real candle lit for her? it is not enough. it is a cheap and fast mourn. for someone they didn't actually know and someone they didn't even think they knew.

RJG (RJG), Wednesday, 13 August 2003 23:07 (twenty-two years ago)

so?

nnnh oh oh nnnh nnnh oh (James Blount), Wednesday, 13 August 2003 23:09 (twenty-two years ago)

haha - valentino did alot of things?

34 films in ten years seems like "a lot of things" to me. Slightly more than "Mid-cast actress in Tuesday night minor drama series".

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Wednesday, 13 August 2003 23:09 (twenty-two years ago)

34 films in ten years is nothing for silent era

nnnh oh oh nnnh nnnh oh (James Blount), Wednesday, 13 August 2003 23:09 (twenty-two years ago)

so have we established how famous you have to be before it's ok to mourn you?

nnnh oh oh nnnh nnnh oh (James Blount), Wednesday, 13 August 2003 23:10 (twenty-two years ago)

But once she was dead, they wanted to insert themselves into then narrative, in a 'I'm such a good person, I went out of my way to make some banal comment about how a character in a fucking TV programme has so affected my life, and now I'm in pain. Yes, that's it. That's the yawning chasm deep in my soul - it's because an actress fell out of a window at a party. I feel so much better now'.

Dave B (daveb), Wednesday, 13 August 2003 23:10 (twenty-two years ago)

so?

nnnh oh oh nnnh nnnh oh (James Blount), Wednesday, 13 August 2003 23:11 (twenty-two years ago)

James- you were the one who bought up fame and mourning. Don't attempt to flip the arguement back when you realise its wrong.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Wednesday, 13 August 2003 23:11 (twenty-two years ago)

um, so they aren't mourning someone famous?

nnnh oh oh nnnh nnnh oh (James Blount), Wednesday, 13 August 2003 23:12 (twenty-two years ago)

Degrees of fame. Do keep up.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Wednesday, 13 August 2003 23:12 (twenty-two years ago)

blount, you are being funny.

do you think you're arguing?

saying someone is an 'angel' and that you know they're 'good'/'in heaven'/'whatever' when you have heard practically nothing about their personal being [and maybe their real name] until they are dead=weird.

RJG (RJG), Wednesday, 13 August 2003 23:13 (twenty-two years ago)

But once she was dead, they wanted to insert themselves into then narrative, in a 'I'm such a good person, I went out of my way to make some banal comment about how a character in a fucking TV programme has so affected my life, and now I'm in pain. Yes, that's it. That's the yawning chasm deep in my soul - it's because an actress fell out of a window at a party. I feel so much better now'.

This honestly sounds like projection. People have always mourned even mildly famous people they didn't know and who hadn't really affected their lives. Reading in that they're doing so because of some perceived "yawning chasm" is either ridiculous or ridiculously pessimistic, because it presumes that those many, many people over many, many years had that kind of pain. Mourning doesn't require pain. "Mourning" of the sort being discussed is essentially a social response.

Tep (ktepi), Wednesday, 13 August 2003 23:14 (twenty-two years ago)

I think random mourn mobs are quite interesting.

N. (nickdastoor), Wednesday, 13 August 2003 23:15 (twenty-two years ago)

I mean, tell me how posting against people posting on a tribute sight is less worrying than posting on a tribute sight? and when I asked 'how is this different from the Gregory Hines RIP thread' the response I got and am getting was 'he's more famous/accomplished/he died a better way' so how is it flipping the argument to ask how famous you have to be before it's ok to mourn you and what are the approved causes of death?

nnnh oh oh nnnh nnnh oh (James Blount), Wednesday, 13 August 2003 23:16 (twenty-two years ago)

so?

RJG (RJG), Wednesday, 13 August 2003 23:16 (twenty-two years ago)

if I move to england and warren spahn dies can I still mourn him even though he's not famous in england?

nnnh oh oh nnnh nnnh oh (James Blount), Wednesday, 13 August 2003 23:17 (twenty-two years ago)

Blount is right but it doesn't matter because Dave isn't really weeping for the future.

N. (nickdastoor), Wednesday, 13 August 2003 23:18 (twenty-two years ago)

what is blount right about?

RJG (RJG), Wednesday, 13 August 2003 23:19 (twenty-two years ago)

this is true plus we're ignoring the true evil: lapdance island

nnnh oh oh nnnh nnnh oh (James Blount), Wednesday, 13 August 2003 23:19 (twenty-two years ago)

Combining flash mobs with mourn mobs is the next big thing. 'Mt @ cemetery 1300. Dunno who stiff is.'

Dave B (daveb), Wednesday, 13 August 2003 23:19 (twenty-two years ago)

As long as you actually cared about Warren Spahn when he was alive and weren't using the tragic death of an actual human being (not just a picture in Heat magazine) to project your own feelings onto, sure, knock yourself out.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Wednesday, 13 August 2003 23:19 (twenty-two years ago)

haha!

nnnh oh oh nnnh nnnh oh (James Blount), Wednesday, 13 August 2003 23:19 (twenty-two years ago)

Nick is right. I am not weeping for the future. How could I? Tomorrow belongs to me.

Dave B (daveb), Wednesday, 13 August 2003 23:20 (twenty-two years ago)

I've seen the adverts for Lapdance Island. There seems to be little in the way of plot.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Wednesday, 13 August 2003 23:20 (twenty-two years ago)

I don't understand where the challenge part comes in

nnnh oh oh nnnh nnnh oh (James Blount), Wednesday, 13 August 2003 23:21 (twenty-two years ago)

It'll just be hosted by Vernon Kaye/Jimmy Carr/Colin Murray/Satan, anyway.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Wednesday, 13 August 2003 23:21 (twenty-two years ago)

The challenge is to realise that winning lapdance island will not fill the yawning chasm in your life.

See what I did there? That's right. I set it up for Dan

Dave B (daveb), Wednesday, 13 August 2003 23:22 (twenty-two years ago)

things will never ever be the same in my life until they introduce a similar character and I replace the milk that I drank today.

RJG (RJG), Wednesday, 13 August 2003 23:23 (twenty-two years ago)

how about candles for lapdancers?

stevem (blueski), Wednesday, 13 August 2003 23:39 (twenty-two years ago)

That's what they do in Bangkok isn't it?

Dave B (daveb), Wednesday, 13 August 2003 23:45 (twenty-two years ago)
