i got 20.
i fear others scores

anthony easton (anthony), Thursday, 14 August 2003 03:13 (twenty-two years ago)

I only recognized maybe one-third of the names, and of those i recognized probably less than one-third of them from the pictures. I did especially badly with the mathematicians, which I guess makes sense, but I felt really bad when I realized I didn't know what Cantor looked like!

Chris P (Chris P), Thursday, 14 August 2003 03:16 (twenty-two years ago)

Unfortunately it loaded up too slowly for me and told me all the names before adding the pictures! But based on that I wouldn't have recognized much, I think.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 14 August 2003 03:17 (twenty-two years ago)

I got five, but they probably say a lot about me. I thought Kubrick was Kerouac, though!

Tep (ktepi), Thursday, 14 August 2003 03:22 (twenty-two years ago)

15. I bow to your superior knowledge, Anthony.

Jodi (Celerina), Thursday, 14 August 2003 03:25 (twenty-two years ago)

2: I got pie-faced Bill Gates and the Pillsbury Doughboy...

i thought i saw jeffrey dahmer, charles manson, mike myers, mumia, steffi graf, and herbert kornfeld [the onion columnist], but no.

but the real question is: how many of these people would you give head to?

phil-two (phil-two), Thursday, 14 August 2003 03:32 (twenty-two years ago)

Doughboy.

Tep (ktepi), Thursday, 14 August 2003 03:35 (twenty-two years ago)

i got four

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Thursday, 14 August 2003 03:45 (twenty-two years ago)

i can't believe i didn't recognise Eno!!

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Thursday, 14 August 2003 03:50 (twenty-two years ago)

I recognized Pynchon, Skinner, and Vygotsky right as I cheated and looked at their names (When I first looked at the Pynchon pic I was like "why would they put a character from a Kenneth Anger film on here?"). The DFW pic was new to me (from high school?). Trotsky looked like a total freak didn't he! I've never seen that pic of Nietzsche either; he looks more like Teddy Roosevelt. There's Derrida looking like Exeter from This Island Earth. I recognized Hegel cause that must be the only portrait of him ever or something. Virginia Woolf, Marx, and Freud also stick out. I love the Foucault! He looks totally high! And why did they put in counselor West from Matrix 2!? :)

Dan I., Thursday, 14 August 2003 03:50 (twenty-two years ago)

Damn, that was hard! I got 8. One I got because I know him!(Appadurai)(that's totally a younger picture of him)

Mr. Diamond (diamond), Thursday, 14 August 2003 04:08 (twenty-two years ago)

I love how they put the Pilsbury Doughboy under "D" when they alphabatize them all. (Ten, by the way.)

Prude (Prude), Thursday, 14 August 2003 04:15 (twenty-two years ago)

There's Derrida looking like Exeter from This Island Earth.

Ha! Yes, that's it exactly! I knew he looked like someone.

Chris P (Chris P), Thursday, 14 August 2003 04:26 (twenty-two years ago)

"Allow me to bonjour you."

"Bonjour."

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 14 August 2003 04:36 (twenty-two years ago)

Gah! I mistook Stanley Kubrick for Salman Rushdie!

Kenan Hebert (kenan), Thursday, 14 August 2003 04:49 (twenty-two years ago)

I have a feeling this test is pretty hard.

Leee (Leee), Thursday, 14 August 2003 04:51 (twenty-two years ago)

d'oh! not that I see the point really. 9: Proust, Kristeva, Foucault, Benjamin, Cixous, Said, Wittgenstein, Freud, Derrida. it's a big theory party around here.

Y'know I should have got more except the photos were not the usual ones you see, or at odd angles or something. Bakhtin, that just wasn't fair. I think though after a while you get burned out on looking at old white guys, they all kinda start to look the same.

daria g (daria g), Thursday, 14 August 2003 05:54 (twenty-two years ago)

pynchon, kubrick, derrida, doughboy, eno, kundera, chomsky, gates

i is r dumb

mark p (Mark P), Thursday, 14 August 2003 07:17 (twenty-two years ago)

I got 12, would've been 13 but I guessed about 15 guys as Arthur C. Clarke so that doesn't count. I didn't get the doughboy.

Andrew Thames (Andrew Thames), Thursday, 14 August 2003 07:26 (twenty-two years ago)

Was one of them actually Arthur C Clarke?

Kenan Hebert (kenan), Thursday, 14 August 2003 07:29 (twenty-two years ago)

I guessed Milton Friedman and Saul Bellow a ton of times (they weren't on there)(I must have been all the dead white males as per daria)

Mr. Diamond (diamond), Thursday, 14 August 2003 07:34 (twenty-two years ago)

'I must' = 'It must'

Mr. Diamond (diamond), Thursday, 14 August 2003 07:34 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah, but y'know. I should've got Raymond Chandler, really

Andrew Thames (Andrew Thames), Thursday, 14 August 2003 07:34 (twenty-two years ago)

I got bored halfway through after only recognising Karl Marx, James Joyce and Bertrand Russell.

Archel (Archel), Thursday, 14 August 2003 07:35 (twenty-two years ago)

My favorite picture:

http://www.vernix.org/marcel/images/people/thomas-pynchon.jpg

(It's Thomas Pynchon. I had no idea.)

Kenan Hebert (kenan), Thursday, 14 August 2003 07:37 (twenty-two years ago)

I knew I had seen that picture before. At first I thought Kenneth Anger (as someone else mentioned above) .. but then I thought "no wait, it's some famous recluse ... um, oh yeah, J.D. Salinger!!!" I picked the wrong famous recluse.

Mr. Diamond (diamond), Thursday, 14 August 2003 07:42 (twenty-two years ago)

Why are loads of people there more than once? I got Woolf and Freud as well, but kept thinking people were AJ Ayer who weren't.

(In my final philosophy class we were given a cut up photo of AJ Ayer and we had to put it together like a jigsaw. I forget the significance...)

Archel (Archel), Thursday, 14 August 2003 07:47 (twenty-two years ago)

I got six. I am rubbish with faces, barely even recognising my friends.

N. (nickdastoor), Thursday, 14 August 2003 07:50 (twenty-two years ago)

http://www.vernix.org/marcel/images/people/sigmund-freud.jpghttp://www.vernix.org/marcel/images/people/miguel-de-unamuno.jpg

How is this not the same man?

Kenan Hebert (kenan), Thursday, 14 August 2003 07:53 (twenty-two years ago)

thirteen.

RJG (RJG), Thursday, 14 August 2003 08:49 (twenty-two years ago)

Ten, but almost exclusively the low(er)brow ones. Thanks to Virginia Woolf for double figures. Jerry the Nipper to thread?

Mark C (Mark C), Thursday, 14 August 2003 09:45 (twenty-two years ago)

My God!! *shudders*

Pinkpanther (Pinkpanther), Thursday, 14 August 2003 10:41 (twenty-two years ago)

They cheated rather by using atypical pics like w/Kubrick (who I got) and Trotsky (who I did not)

Andrew Thames (Andrew Thames), Thursday, 14 August 2003 10:44 (twenty-two years ago)

12, which is more than I expected. I am so horrible matching up names to faces in everyday situations.

Larcole (Nicole), Thursday, 14 August 2003 11:50 (twenty-two years ago)

22! I got: Gilroy, Spivak, Proust, Kafka, Foucault, Kubrick, Wittegenstein, Woolf, Mackinnon, Freud, Arendt, Cronkite, Joyce, Kristeva, Klein, Henson, West, Doughboy, Butler, Chandler, and Russell. I am sad that I did not guess more feminist theorists.

rosemary (rosemary), Thursday, 14 August 2003 12:42 (twenty-two years ago)

And the guy I thought was Strom Thurmond was Andre Gide! Ooops.

rosemary (rosemary), Thursday, 14 August 2003 12:43 (twenty-two years ago)

I thought:

Thomas Pynchon was Frank Sinatra

Ezra Pound was Christopher Lee

Carl Hempel was that KFC bloke

I got 2 right, same two as Phil.

jel -- (jel), Thursday, 14 August 2003 16:30 (twenty-two years ago)

5, the easy ones: Freud, Pynchon, Poe, Pillsbury, and someone else easy.

NA (Nick A.), Thursday, 14 August 2003 16:36 (twenty-two years ago)

Henson? Cause yeah, those were mine, only Hoftstadter instead of Pynchon. I have no idea why I got Hofstadter. I didn't even realize I'd seen a photograph of him.

Tep (ktepi), Thursday, 14 August 2003 16:43 (twenty-two years ago)

17. I bet I'm the only one who got Gadamer, right? It bothers me that I didn't recognize a few safe ones (mistook Poe for Berlioz, hmph).

nestmanso (nestmanso), Thursday, 14 August 2003 17:04 (twenty-two years ago)

Edward Said's pic looks like Georgia O'Keefe.

g--ff c-nn-n (gcannon), Thursday, 14 August 2003 17:18 (twenty-two years ago)

9, but I recognized 3 more and couldn't place the name. i r dumm 2

Sean Carruthers (SeanC), Thursday, 14 August 2003 17:28 (twenty-two years ago)

frederic jameson = derek "do they mean us?" jameson!!!

Jeff W (zebedee), Thursday, 14 August 2003 17:33 (twenty-two years ago)

I had no idea Said looked so .. white. I guess I've never seen a picture of him before.

Mr. Diamond (diamond), Thursday, 14 August 2003 18:08 (twenty-two years ago)

hmmm, i guess the whole point of this quiz is to zing the english/sociology grad school set. you could do the same thing with law students -- put up pictures of, say, holmes, cardozo, john marshall, roscoe pound -- or mathematics students (whoever the mathematician gods may be).

Tad (llamasfur), Thursday, 14 August 2003 18:13 (twenty-two years ago)

I got 12 including the Doughboy.

o. nate (onate), Thursday, 14 August 2003 18:23 (twenty-two years ago)

18: Joyce, Proust, Wittgenstein*, Woolf, Pillsbury, Lawrence, Kristeva*, Cixous**, Clarke, Marx, Dawkins, Kubrick, Eno, Turing, Cousteau, Henson, Gates, Shannon.

(* - lucky guesses; ** - interpolated from a Simon Reynolds description of female audience members at a Cocteau Twins gig in 1990 [all the blokes looked like members of The Wolfgang Press])

I thought Lyotard was Richard Feynman, Bourdieu was John Irving and Marcel Molina the singer out of Hefner.

None of this should imply that I can claim familiarity with any of their work - though I do own a well-worn copy of Ambient 6: Music for Muppet Mountain (or How I Learned To Stop Worrying And Love The Bear [Fozzie]).

Michael Jones (MichaelJ), Thursday, 14 August 2003 20:17 (twenty-two years ago)

Eno and Dostoyevsky were easy because I've got cds with eno and books with dostoyevsky on them.
I also got Joyce, Hensen, Freud, Marx, Conrad, Kafka, Poe, Pillsbury Doughboy, Tadao Ando (only because I just recently saw a picture of him)

(I've seen pictures of Proust and Boole, but couldn't remember them)

11 total
A lot of the other names I don't even know

A Nairn (moretap), Thursday, 14 August 2003 20:53 (twenty-two years ago)

Leee, that's not George Lucas, that's Colonel Sanders.

rosemary (rosemary), Thursday, 14 August 2003 22:44 (twenty-two years ago)

Maybe if there were a prominent "KFC hate thread" I'd have said the Colonel.

Leee (Leee), Thursday, 14 August 2003 22:50 (twenty-two years ago)
