Taking sides: gun control vs revolution

This choice seems like the undercurrent to a lot of the opposition to gun control laws. Why the fuck else would people harp about "a well-armed citizenry?" It's not in order to shoot down MX missiles!

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Thursday, 14 August 2003 04:36 (twenty-two years ago)

well duh Tracer

nnnh oh oh nnnh nnnh oh (James Blount), Thursday, 14 August 2003 04:42 (twenty-two years ago)

I mean you wanna see some real deal anti-government muhfuhs go to a gun convention.

nnnh oh oh nnnh nnnh oh (James Blount), Thursday, 14 August 2003 04:43 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm guessing more people buy guns with the intention of fending off burglars rather than soldiers.

oops (Oops), Thursday, 14 August 2003 04:50 (twenty-two years ago)

Dale on King of the Hill: "Guns don't kill people, the government kills people."

Kenan Hebert (kenan), Thursday, 14 August 2003 04:53 (twenty-two years ago)

I suspect most of those anti-govt wackjobs would be first in line to sign up with the Fascists, if the Fascists promised to restore "family values" and "strengthen national defense" and kick some foreigner ass. So they're less "anti-govt" than "anti-modern, democratic govt."

Is there any bigger bullshit reason to own a gun than "to ward off a tyrannical government"? Should an American dictatorship come to power, it's almost certainly going to have the support of the 'greatest' military in history, and quite likely the support of a large portion of the general populace. A few untrained people fighting back with pistols and even AR-15s or whatever the weapon-du-jour of that type might be are harmless.

Someone's slogan should be "Gun Control For The Government!"

miloauckerman (miloauckerman), Thursday, 14 August 2003 04:58 (twenty-two years ago)

hahaha that is even MORE delusional. Those are the same people who think if an airplane crashes over the ocean they're going to slide to safety on those big rubber slides. IT'S NOT GOING TO HAPPEN. Now revolution, on the other hand...

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Thursday, 14 August 2003 04:59 (twenty-two years ago)

it's Kuchinich's slogan

nnnh oh oh nnnh nnnh oh (James Blount), Thursday, 14 August 2003 04:59 (twenty-two years ago)

At that point, my slogan will be, "O! Canada."

Kenan Hebert (kenan), Thursday, 14 August 2003 05:00 (twenty-two years ago)

mine will be "Chesseburger in Paradise"

nnnh oh oh nnnh nnnh oh (James Blount), Thursday, 14 August 2003 05:01 (twenty-two years ago)

That was a reply to oops, sorry if that was unclear! It worked both ways though!

milo then we need access to MX missiles too!! Background check, fuck you! "Sir, you were arrested protesting in front of City Hall, agitating for representative democracy and nationalization of industry, or something. Sorry." SSSSKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKOOOOOOOOOOOOOOSSSHHH BBBBWWWWWWOOOOMMMMMM

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Thursday, 14 August 2003 05:03 (twenty-two years ago)

New Zealand here I come. Nobody hates New Zealand. Nobody wants to blow New Zealand to hell and New Zealand doesn't want to blow anyone else up.

miloauckerman (miloauckerman), Thursday, 14 August 2003 05:04 (twenty-two years ago)

"and it looks like you've got a couple of questionable posts on the Internet, too"

That's how the left-wing Red Dawn should open.

miloauckerman (miloauckerman), Thursday, 14 August 2003 05:05 (twenty-two years ago)

People can learn to hate anything. You never know if New Zealand will be next. Arm yourself!

Kenan Hebert (kenan), Thursday, 14 August 2003 05:07 (twenty-two years ago)

it is delusional, tracer...but i don't think it is MORE delusional. I mean, with a lone intruder you actually have a shot, so to speak.

oops (Oops), Thursday, 14 August 2003 05:08 (twenty-two years ago)

I will defend Auckland to the last kiwi. (Or Kiwi, depending.)

miloauckerman (miloauckerman), Thursday, 14 August 2003 05:08 (twenty-two years ago)

...or to the last... Auck?

I always figured that in this day and age if ever it comes to needing arms to repel agents or soldiers of our own government, it will be too late. We already will be beyond the point of saving ourselves or any political infrastructure worth saving.

A pal of mine describes having a brief but intense love affair with his handguns, but abandoning them due to the predominant political culture of his shooting range. You may guess at the cultural and political demographics of a shooting range in Aurora Colorado. Some of his recountings of conversations from there are great though!

Hunter (Hunter), Thursday, 14 August 2003 17:37 (twenty-two years ago)

Can I lead the revolution? I have this image in my mind and it involves camoflauge hot pants and a really tight camo jacket and also a belt of bullets. I see no reason to actually wear this outfit unless I'm either singing "Your Disco Needs You" or running a revolution.

Ally (mlescaut), Thursday, 14 August 2003 17:45 (twenty-two years ago)

See, this outfit is where the "fending off a lone intruder" strategy falls down.

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Thursday, 14 August 2003 17:53 (twenty-two years ago)

Depends on the intruder.

Ally (mlescaut), Thursday, 14 August 2003 17:56 (twenty-two years ago)

take me to yer leader, and all that

Tad (llamasfur), Thursday, 14 August 2003 18:10 (twenty-two years ago)

Vous etes jamais seuls
Vous savez ce qu'il faut faire
Ne laissez pas tomber votre nation
La disco a besoin de vous!

Die Astrologie will aus dem Lauf und der Stellung der Sterne die Zukunft der Mensche deuten.

Tad (llamasfur), Thursday, 14 August 2003 18:16 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm trying to find this outfit online and I'm finding out that there's really not enough exploration of the "sexy sargeant" genre in the world of costume lingerie. Why is dressing like a "sexy police officer" somehow more erotic? Hang on, I'm just going to start another thread for this.

Ally (mlescaut), Thursday, 14 August 2003 18:17 (twenty-two years ago)

Ally where are those lyrics from?

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Thursday, 14 August 2003 18:18 (twenty-two years ago)

Tracer, they're from Your Disco Needs You. I have to give you that song, it's incredible. It sounds like Britney Spears having sex with the Village People while giving military orders but even more gay.

Ally (mlescaut), Thursday, 14 August 2003 18:20 (twenty-two years ago)

If that isn't coming to the aid of your nation I don't know what is.

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Thursday, 14 August 2003 18:26 (twenty-two years ago)

my song, echo all the way home from the trenches.
when i smash the american robbers of happiness,
and i return home with glittering metals on my chest,
all my beloved family will be in my arms!

Tad (llamasfur), Thursday, 14 August 2003 18:27 (twenty-two years ago)

Ally I had a dream two years ago where you and a bunch of your friends killed me! You were wearing red berets. I'm not even kidding. It was awesome. Then a bunch of valkyries came to take me to Valhalla. That shit was tight!!

sunburned and snowblind (kenan), Tuesday, 22 March 2005 21:31 (twenty years ago)

No one ever addressed the thread question! I say gun control, but I think that may be because I'm a pussy.

sunburned and snowblind (kenan), Tuesday, 22 March 2005 21:35 (twenty years ago)

Handguns are the problem. Worthless as government checkers, only useful in domestic disputes and robberies.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Tuesday, 22 March 2005 21:39 (twenty years ago)

wait a second how the hell did Tom have a dream about me killing him two years ago? Actually 4 now almost!! I CALL LYING.

Allyzay Subservient 50s-Type (allyzay), Tuesday, 22 March 2005 21:56 (twenty years ago)

He was just flirting with you.

sunburned and snowblind (kenan), Tuesday, 22 March 2005 21:57 (twenty years ago)

About eight months after my first post to this thread I won an AR-15 in a raffle held at the shooting range/gun club I'm nominally a member of. I've used it once.

milozauckerman (miloaukerman), Tuesday, 22 March 2005 22:20 (twenty years ago)

ten months pass...
Gun ownership rates in the US have risen steadily over the last ten years, yet crime in virtually all areas has decreased. If guns are associated with crime, one would expect a rise in crime.

The drop in crime rates is even true in places that allow citizens to exercise their universal right to conceal carry, despite the fact that anti-rights advocates assured the public there would be public gunfights because of concealed carry.

The 1994 "Assault" Weapons Ban did not statistically reduce crime at all and, despite assurances from anti-rights advocates that police would be machine gunned down in the streets, the law expired in 2004 and there has been no increase in crime.

Two examples - the DC "sniper" and Columbine - were both committed by people who ignored gun control laws despite the fact that they knew they would, most likely, die as a result. Thus, one can make a logical conclusion that more gun control laws or a ban would not have stopped either incident.

The places in the US with the highest crime rates are often cities with the strictest gun laws such as Washington D.C. and Chicago.

Places such as the UK and Australia that have denied their citizens the right to self-defense are now facing rising gun crime and bladed weapons assaults - so much so that many places are now considering banning knives and swords.

I would only use a gun to defend myself from Deana Carter fans.

Pleasant Plains /// (Pleasant Plains ///), Saturday, 18 February 2006 00:18 (twenty years ago)

petlover, did you write that yourself?

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Saturday, 18 February 2006 00:23 (twenty years ago)

Oh no. I copy and pasted it from the NRA website. Duh!

petlover, Saturday, 18 February 2006 00:30 (twenty years ago)

Online posting of Star Trek slash fiction in the US have risen steadily over the last ten years, so crime in virtually all areas has decreased.

kingfish has gene rayburn's mic (kingfish 2.0), Saturday, 18 February 2006 00:32 (twenty years ago)

Country Rapes Hand gun ownership
United States 26.4 29%
West Germany 11.3 6.5%
Canada 8.4 4%
Australia 6.3 2%
England & Wales 2.6 0.5%

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Saturday, 18 February 2006 00:39 (twenty years ago)

draw your own conclusions

before i draw mine

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Saturday, 18 February 2006 00:39 (twenty years ago)

http://www.nationmaster.com/graph-T/cri_mur_wit_fir_percap

I'm not good when it comes to statistics but the per capita for the US is .0279271 per 1,000 people and the closest Western countries on the list are Portugal 0.00795003 per 1,000 people, Canada 0.00502972 per 1,000 people and Germany 0.00465844 per 1,000 people

Is that a big difference?

petlover, Saturday, 18 February 2006 00:48 (twenty years ago)

i see we're nestled in the company of costa rica and uruguay. i have to think gun ownership is the only reason such a prosperous and powerful nation as ours even comes close to the top of that list.

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Saturday, 18 February 2006 00:53 (twenty years ago)

haha "ours" -- i don't know where you're from, obv

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Saturday, 18 February 2006 00:53 (twenty years ago)

Uh you don't think that the vast gulf between rich and poor might have something to do with it, Tracer?

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Saturday, 18 February 2006 00:55 (twenty years ago)

I don't know, the difference between the US and those Western countries I pointed out don't seem that big to me.

petlover, Saturday, 18 February 2006 00:58 (twenty years ago)

I'm relatively pro-gun control (meaning that I think it should me regulated by the government certainly as much as we do automobiles), but I think most gun control advocates and the gun lobby are completely batshit fucking crazy. Until the debate becomes more civil the chances of sensible regulations being put in place are slim and none.
