Do they suck?

Is it possible to have one without it being just generally unpleasant for everyone involved/close by?

Nordicskillz (Nordicskillz), Thursday, 14 August 2003 16:56 (twenty-two years ago)

Good advice from Kyle, tho -

"They're for YOUR FRIENDS, not you".

Nordicskillz (Nordicskillz), Thursday, 14 August 2003 16:57 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm invited to my first one in November, but a) I'm a member of the bridal party (I'm the Honor Guy) and am invited to the bachelor party only cause it's more sensible than going to the spa, and b) it's the guy who's marrying my best friend, even though I know she has pre-approved the possibility of strippers, I don't think I want to see that ...

So anyway, I'm not going. Mostly because it'll be my first time back in New Orleans and my only chance to do New Orleans things instead of wedding things, since I'm only there for like two days.

I have no idea what to expect from them in general, having heard such a wide variety of things about different friends' and friends-of-friends' parties.

Tep (ktepi), Thursday, 14 August 2003 17:02 (twenty-two years ago)

As long as the stripper doesn't turn out to be your ex-girlfriend, they're generally pretty bad-ass in a drunken woo-hoo tittehs! kinda way.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Thursday, 14 August 2003 17:10 (twenty-two years ago)

(note, I've never actually been to one...HA!)

nickalicious (nickalicious), Thursday, 14 August 2003 17:10 (twenty-two years ago)

When I organised a stag night I wanted to make it a fun day/night out and as drunk as possible and for any embarrassment to be mild. It worked and everyone enjoyed themselves. So I'm quite looking forward to mine (as the person I organised it for is in charge, and owes me, heh.)

Tom (Groke), Thursday, 14 August 2003 17:12 (twenty-two years ago)

Tom the whole point of a stag party is maximum humiliation!

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Thursday, 14 August 2003 17:22 (twenty-two years ago)

They seem so lame.

Ally (mlescaut), Thursday, 14 August 2003 17:36 (twenty-two years ago)

you americans are funny...

my stag day:

bowling (and beer)
curry (and beer)
nightclub (and more beer)

it also helped that my mates ran the club i suppose, and i was very surprised when i was totally not humiliated in the slightest, just nicely slaughtered...

ally i agree with you that standard stripper/tying to lampposts/putting on train to inverness shennanigans is rub, but i just had a good day on the lash with 15 of my mates

CarsmileSteve (CarsmileSteve), Thursday, 14 August 2003 17:39 (twenty-two years ago)

"funny" in this context meaning "way cooler" though, right? Seriously British people are so repressed!

< /stereotype>

Ally (mlescaut), Thursday, 14 August 2003 17:41 (twenty-two years ago)

i'll be going to my first one sometime early next year

stevem (blueski), Thursday, 14 August 2003 17:42 (twenty-two years ago)

Bachelor parties without strippers are like beach vacations without sunshine.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Thursday, 14 August 2003 17:47 (twenty-two years ago)

My brother was 20 when he had to throw a bachelor party for one of his friends. He didn't really know how to go about it, but he got a stripper for all of his really geeky friends. They were drinking heavily, and my brother got the idea that she should grind on his 6 foot tall cardboard image of Chewbacca. She did it. Probably the most surreal bachelor party I've ever heard of.

Dale the Titled (cprek), Thursday, 14 August 2003 17:52 (twenty-two years ago)

finally the age old question 'What can you buy a Wookiee for Christmas (when he already has a comb)?' has been answered!

stevem (blueski), Thursday, 14 August 2003 18:03 (twenty-two years ago)

The problem here is that Nordic can't drink and seems like a generally decent, non-stripper oriented guy to me, so he may well sit through his party as the sober entity bored and bewildered. I am bound by law to not speak about my bachelor party in depth.

anthony kyle monday (akmonday), Thursday, 14 August 2003 18:11 (twenty-two years ago)

i dunno. you can always steal street signs and set fires on a beach.

friend of mine reportedly did that when she was invited to her friend's bachelor party, 'cuz she sure as shit wasn't going to the bachelorette party. "oh look! we can all sit around and drink wine coolers with her aunts! how FUN!"

Kingfish (Kingfish), Thursday, 14 August 2003 18:15 (twenty-two years ago)

is hedonism dead?

kephm, Thursday, 14 August 2003 18:25 (twenty-two years ago)

No, it's just passed out.

NA (Nick A.), Thursday, 14 August 2003 18:27 (twenty-two years ago)

I don't remember much about my brother's bachelor party. The next day, though, my wallet was significantly lighter and I had a burn hole from a cigarette in my shirt.

hstencil, Thursday, 14 August 2003 18:43 (twenty-two years ago)

I am bound by law to not speak about my bachelor party in depth.

You keep saying that. One of these days, I'll find out...

Nordicskillz (Nordicskillz), Friday, 15 August 2003 17:56 (twenty-two years ago)

apparantly, only women have raunchy pre-wedding parties now. Men have much more subdued get-togethers, like going golfing or some shit.

Horace Mann (Horace Mann), Friday, 15 August 2003 17:59 (twenty-two years ago)

...Aaaaah, that sounds nice. I wonder what Matt Damon is planning for Ben Affleck?

Nordicskillz (Nordicskillz), Friday, 15 August 2003 18:01 (twenty-two years ago)

that's guys LIFE is one big stag party.

Horace Mann (Horace Mann), Friday, 15 August 2003 18:02 (twenty-two years ago)

so's mine, if you consider eating Pringles alone in the dark listening to Willie Nelson a stag party.

Horace Mann (Horace Mann), Friday, 15 August 2003 18:04 (twenty-two years ago)

Is there nudity involved? If so, that's pretty wild.

Nordicskillz (Nordicskillz), Friday, 15 August 2003 18:05 (twenty-two years ago)

i had to plan two: one was wild and one was subdued.

gygax! (gygax!), Friday, 15 August 2003 18:08 (twenty-two years ago)

What happened at the subdued one? Which was more fun?

Nordicskillz (Nordicskillz), Friday, 15 August 2003 18:22 (twenty-two years ago)

Never been to one.

jel -- (jel), Friday, 15 August 2003 18:23 (twenty-two years ago)

both were fun, the wild one got a little out of hand but everyone involved had fun.

but to answer your question nordique, this is my motto:

it doesn't matter where you are, if you're with the right people, you can have a blast anywhere.

gygax! (gygax!), Friday, 15 August 2003 18:46 (twenty-two years ago)

first i'd like to preface that i'm not a regular to the strip clubs. i've been to three bachelor parties. besides the bachelor parties, i've only been to two other strip clubs. once one opened around the corner from my old apartment and me and all my roommates decided to go. the other time was with work after a christmas party. everybody, even all the girls (who were mostly lesbians) went. it's kinda weird seeing your boss (who's obviously a regular to these places) talk all sexy to the dancers. ick!

first was my brother's. i was the best man. already completely drunk when we walked into the strip club, they immediately swooped the two of us upstairs into private rooms. i'd never had a lap dance before and didn't know what to expect so i ended up getting embarrased and just talking to the girl. what do you say to someone when they say "so what would you like me to do???"

next was my uncle's (a santa barbara frat boy - the worst kind) in las vegas. my kidney's hurt the whole weekend i was drinking so much. they got strippers to come to the room. have any of you guys seen the last scene in Requiem for a Dream?

finally mine just a few weeks ago. it was full bar, so no full nudity. i actually thought this was better. it was tamer sexually, but less tame because we were all so drunk. one of the strippers was giving me a lap dance and slapped me really hard on the face as a joke "to wake me up". that was the highlight of the evening.

oh, but these don't even compare to the stories of my friends that have been to them. one friend had a stripper in his apartment. had the boys put on strapons and fuck them. another time one of my friends went down on this nasty lil kim looking stripper and she told him it was like "living in the ritz"

JasonD (JasonD), Friday, 15 August 2003 18:52 (twenty-two years ago)

not THAT uncle.... omg!!!

gygax! (gygax!), Friday, 15 August 2003 18:59 (twenty-two years ago)

she should grind on his 6 foot tall cardboard image of Chewbacca

Wow. Being a stripper sounds fun.

Sarah McLusky (coco), Friday, 15 August 2003 19:11 (twenty-two years ago)

There's seriously not enough Wookies involved in the flesh trade.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Friday, 15 August 2003 19:14 (twenty-two years ago)

not THAT uncle.... omg!!!

he came up to you at the wedding and talked to you about being a dj?? yeah, that uncle. he wasn't involved in the "ass to ass" if that's what you're thinking, but the strippers at his bachelor party were.

JasonD (JasonD), Friday, 15 August 2003 19:23 (twenty-two years ago)

ahhh okay, it wasn't the one I was thinking of... haha

have fun tonight, woo yeah, i think we've got dinner plans next week check your roommate's calendar.

gygax! (gygax!), Friday, 15 August 2003 19:27 (twenty-two years ago)

but to answer your question nordique, this is my motto:

it doesn't matter where you are, if you're with the right people, you can have a blast anywhere.

gygax!, that is a charming and incredibly sweet motto. Translated form the original latin?

Nordicskillz (Nordicskillz), Friday, 15 August 2003 20:00 (twenty-two years ago)

My first night ever in London my friends and I ran into some men out and about on a stag night. My friend Heather told them they should go see strippers. Then she asked me not to tell the rest of the Women's Concerns members that she did this.

rosemary (rosemary), Friday, 15 August 2003 21:34 (twenty-two years ago)

There are many untold stories on this thread.

Nordicskillz (Nordicskillz), Monday, 18 August 2003 16:36 (twenty-two years ago)

I think the told story trumps all of the untold ones.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Monday, 18 August 2003 16:45 (twenty-two years ago)

one friend had a stripper in his apartment. had the boys put on strapons and fuck them.

The "them" in that last sentence is rather ambiguous, I think.

now THAT's a party!

Kingfish (Kingfish), Monday, 18 August 2003 18:12 (twenty-two years ago)

Mine's going to be a cheap trip to Spain, for football, tapas and beer. And anyone engaging in lamppost or stripper shenanigans will be shot.

chris (chris), Tuesday, 19 August 2003 07:32 (twenty-two years ago)

if you consider eating Pringles alone in the dark listening to Willie Nelson a stag party.

Horace, that's not a stag night, that's a marriage.

And to answer the questioon, it's not the fear of eternal bliss/nomoresex that stops me getting marr(i)ed, it's the fear of the stag night.

CharlieNo4 (Charlie), Tuesday, 19 August 2003 14:57 (twenty-two years ago)

i went to a bachelorette party for one of my hometown/high school friends a few years ago. another friend and i tried to time it so we 'accidentally' missed the stripper. unfortunately, he was even later than us. i was horrified to discover that he was a regular customer at the bike shop where i worked-- paying in cash. now that i knew where the cash had been, i couldn't help him without giggling. that's the downside of strippers in a smallish town. later, we went dancing, and the bride had strangers bite lifesavers(polo-mint-like things for the people here) that had been sewn on her t-shirt. ewwww.

there was an article in cosmo about a woman's husband that was murdered on a stag night in amsterdam...i'm interested in more 'dark side of the stag night' stories. although it was really sad...

colette (a2lette), Tuesday, 19 August 2003 22:33 (twenty-two years ago)

here's my wife at her bachelorette party getting candy eaten off her by one of our friends. nothing eww about it, except for the dude she didn't know that went for the nips. BACK OFF BUD!

gygax! (gygax!), Wednesday, 20 August 2003 00:06 (twenty-two years ago)

I hate the word bachelorette - it's so clunky, and I always think it must refer to very small bachelors. I can see its advantage over spinster, of course.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Wednesday, 20 August 2003 16:10 (twenty-two years ago)

two years pass...
So, my gf's going on a hen weekend to Brighton this weekend, and the alleged highlight of their weekend is set to take place somewhere called The Gap Club.

Let me give you an example of a typical customer response on a local website:

"The dj could drown a cat with his collection of piss
records"

"this friday was awful, no people, no atmosphere and
no talent behind the music, it was total pants, hang
the dj the bar staff and the bloody doorman"

oh, and not to mention:

"WHAT CAN I SAY! I (we) had a great night at the Gap Club! Thanks to all the fireman and my chaperone - Mr Blue!!!! He was a laugh! And the driver John! I took all my girlie friends and no one was left out - all had the attention and all loved it!
Dancing on the bar and being soaked, having shots poured down mouths! Competitions, etc etc etc Oh and thanks for my flaming sambuca with a lolly!!!!!
Loved it - you must go and visit the GAP CLUB!"

"Too me it was one big tacky orgy club, men coming in later to see if they can get a what shall i say "SHAG later" , as the women get to see
cock and will be up for it!!!nah this is not for me nor my fellow hens"

the bar staff:

http://www.henheaven.co.uk/images/firemen-barmen.jpg

I don't know whether to laugh or cry; and the girls? they're shitting themselves...

CharlieNo4 (Charlie), Wednesday, 14 September 2005 11:45 (twenty years ago)

Ah yes, The Gash Club. Went there once. It wasn't very good. A good size for hiring out for a party, but otherwise.. nah!

Chewshabadoo (Chewshabadoo), Wednesday, 14 September 2005 14:45 (twenty years ago)

my husband's stag party guest list consisted of:

1. my dad
2. my brotherinlaw
3. a close family friend
4. the(late) poet Ted Hughes

they went to a (ha!) poetry reading, then a strip club. none of my husband's friends or kin arrived til later in the week so they couldn't attend. but fun was had all round, apparently.

i on the other hand had a less glamourous time at my "doe" party: i got alcohol poisoning from the shooters my high school girlfriends were buying me and ended up rolling down a hill into a bush and was bed-ridden for 24 hours.

I like these kind of prefabricated rituals.

LocalGarda, Friday, 5 August 2011 10:39 (fourteen years ago)

Though never had any strippers at any bachelor parties I've been to.

LocalGarda, Friday, 5 August 2011 10:39 (fourteen years ago)

These depend entirely on the group really - one of the best nights I've had this year was leading my best friend's stag night - but equally they can be appalling if you're in the wrong place with the wrong people. Never been to one that involved strippers or competitive drinking but I can imagine that would be pretty grim.

Matt DC, Friday, 5 August 2011 11:51 (fourteen years ago)

organising my brother's this year - i say organising it but mostly he has tended to ask for advice then do the thing he wanted to in the first place. ultimately it's his weekend so that's grand, and it means i don't have to make much effort, essentially i might end up booking things he's already decided to do. v limited scope too - he's negotiated the main plan back to end as "going to his local pub".
